Hi all,
Unfortunately, my current moggy has bit the dust so i am on the lookout for another!
I'm just wondering, which is better Auto or Manual? I do mostly motorway miles and only travel at weekends.
Are there any problems i should be looking at just in case?
Thanks for your help :)

Indeed!!! ;D ;D ;D

Auto's are better in traffic stop/start but dont offer much engine breaking and need to be serviced regually!
The R28 should last the life time of the car without any maintenance
Manuals offer more engine breaking and better speed top end with exception to the Merc 7 Speed auto's
-
Count your feet ... there is the answer .. :)
-
i must point out my current car is an auto and its :y especially when its in S Mode
-
i have a manual and would swap it for an auto anyday
-
It's more of what i can afford if i go down the route of auto or manual.
I prefer manual but beggars.....

Thought the servicing was the same apart from the occasional 70000 mile atf change :y

Manual! If you're going to drive do it properly!!! ;) ;D

IMO -
Nice size engine in a decent size car = Automatic
Small Sporty Hatch = Manual
I dont see the point in having a Manual Gearbox in a fat arsed Omega which is useless at belting around country lanes but awesome at sitting on nice A Roads and Motorways. Kind of defeats the object of having a comfortable cruiser.
I reiterate though, that's purely my opinion.

My MV6 is far from useless in the lanes, seriously more fun than Jimbobs auto is! :y

But still, in standard guise, completely useless compared to a 205GTi or Astra VXR.
Both of which would not be suited to an Automatic Transmission.
-
Neither is better than the other! ;) ;)
One is an auto & the other isn't! :y :y

Yes, but its an omega and as such is far from useless!
It can't be compared to astra or 205, wheel drive for starters! :-?

A 205 is about 1/2 the weight of an Omega & size!
0-60, Omega would have trouble, but once rolling and 40/50+ a 3.0 Omega would easily keep up
-
Both our Omegas are autos - but they are daily drivers.
My Carlton is for fun and is Manual.
I would never have considered an auto until the missis got the Elite. Easy and lazy - great around town!!!

LOL. So you completely understand my point, yet argue against it anyway? Kudos.
Simple fact: The Omega was not built to to be thrashed around twisty B roads. From that point, it is completely useless at doing it, either in Manual or Automatic. As owners of Omega's, we understand that and accept that.... if we wanted to do that, we'd step into another vehicle better suited.
I used small hatchback cars as an example to back-up my initial statement of
Nice size engine in a decent size car = Automatic
Small Sporty Hatch = Manual
As said, apart from the fact above, everything else is purely opinion...... but, a well justified opinion I believe.

With wallo-O-matic Elite suspension, maybe. But with MV6 suspension, no.

FFS You're comparing the incomparable!
Drive a 3 litre, chipped MV6 then come back to me, at the mo you're waffling! ;)

Save your breathe Broomie. You'll never convince a manual driver who want to 'be in control' etc etc that any car is capable of having 2 pedals ..... as Entwood say ..... one for each foot! :y :y ;)
-
Mine has full uprated Bilstein Socks and Springs. :y
Trust me, it is still useless. :P
Just too heavy.

I drive both and wouldn't walk away from either, what I do disagree with is the useless in lanes statement!

Nothing is incomparable.
Plus, as stated, I have uprated Suspension on mine. Yes, better than std Elite, but still not good.
I just know that my 2.0 8v Cavalier with uprated Suspension (still a really bad car around the really twisty bits) will annihilate a 3.0 V6 Omega, with MV6 suspension or not. On a big open A road, it stands no chance.
Horses for courses.
This has stepped away from the OP question (one which has been done to death).
I've said my piece. I wont go any further.

'dangle berries', excuse my french!!

I own both, and drive both on a daily basis. I should have a fair idea, should I not?
That's enough from me anyways.
I like both Manual and Auto, but only when they are suited to the application they were designed for.

So do I, and my crappy (manual) Astra is faster around a lot of corners/bends on my commute to work than the Omega is ...... it's half the size & weight! (nearly ;))

Suppose this is a bad time to mention front wheel drive cars are not that great round the lanes anyway.... ;)
-
Anyway think the original question was whether to buy an auto or manual OMEGA not whether to buy an old french hatch or a 13K VXR for "thrashing round the lanes" drenched in testosterone whilst trying to keep a copy of max power open on the steering wheel.

There is no right answer to this question, except both maybe

Whats better Auto or Manual, Manual or Auto, only one way to find out...... FIGHT! :D
-
FFS the choice is purely subjective. I wouldn't give you thank you for a manual car OF ANY SIZE OR PERFORMANCE! But that is me, and not you!
Each to his own. :D :y 8-)
PS And I held an RAC rally licence for a few years back in the '60's.
-
I think the answer is obvious - it is much better to drive a manual car.
Having said that, my cars over the past 10 years have all been automatic, because I CBA to change gears ;D
So this is the essence of it in a nutshell....
