Hello all,Im going to take the plunge an get a diagnostic tool to read miggy's systems and my daughter's Corsa ::).Can any of you kindly help and give me your experiences and advice :y as there seems to be an absolute mountain of stuff available. I suppose after a lot of years of maintaining my own cars motorbikes and vans :( I'm finally going to have to face up to that in this electronic age its difficult to manage without one,and possibly have to dig deep :-/ :y :y

There is a quite a discourse on various codereaders somewhere ... Done by MarkDTM I think ..but I can't find it... :(
IIRC they break into 3 regions..
Real Tech2 / Commercial readers (snap on etc) - Very expensive
"stand alone" testers - plug into the socket and give a readout on the device
laptop based - as said .. use an interface and software based computer.
I have 2 .. one being the latter type .. ELM32, it works .. just about, but is fiddly to set up, requires the laptop to be perched somewhere, and is very limited - but that might be the software I have .. tried about 4 versions ... never really happy.
I also have the maxscan ... which I'm very happy with; does Engine faults, EML reset and limited live data, plus a tiny bit of autobox stuff.
Now my theory is quite simple - like me !! - If the problem is beyond what the maxscan tells me .. its probably beyond my ability to fix it !! At which point I yell/pay for help from either Mark DTM or The Boy who both have full Tech2 machines.. and more importantly ... know how to use them !!!

If only ;D
First one, I was fed up with dealer in MK screwing me and not fixing issues. Last 2 were bought for the benefit of OOF. Hopefully with the money they make, they may pay for themselves (or at least get close to) in a few years.

reckon so. Wouldn't mind betting that that flash card is wrong type, as I can't even get a pattern 32Mb card for under £300 - comon trick by sellers is to use a cheaper card that is incompitable...

Hello Entwood and Jimbob,Thanks for your replies. From which it seems then that to get a package that will read all the car systems not just the engine it needs to be PC/Software based, unless your prepared to pay Tech 2 money.Jimbob the "My Naff Code Reader" does seem a bit pricey. I'll just keep looking and let you know how I go on :y :y

The ELM327 stuff on ebay is engine only, AFAIK very little does full car systems except Tech2, "My Naff Code Reader" and Snap-On

Hello all, Things are complicated such a pity I'm so far away from Tech2 I could trust. :(The recent "TC 1700" I got with the pedal trick is still there after a complete fluid change. :o I understand it could go in due course but I'm still nervous as to what the cause actually is."Service"is well vague. Far better to have my own diagnostics if at all possible, and have a proper Tech 2 check by our own experts as per service booklet intervals.Entwood I think I've found a good post on "omega common issues and faq" by vxl v6 about an "opal autoscanner(advanced)"Have a look, trouble is I don't seem to be able to find a source of supply. :y :y

Opel-Scanner does pretty much all the systems on the Opel range from 1984 to present but with limited programming functionality.
Snap-On is entirely dependant upon which model and modules are plugged in.
