Title: Low Entry Car Ramps
Post by: Jim on 21 February 2010, 10:34:50
Has anyone used low entry car ramps on there omega, just wondering as i have an irmscher front end and don't want to scratch the bottom of it as I drive up the ramp.

The best way to use ramps on an Omega is to jack each side up and slide the ramps under the wheel.

i have exactly the same ramps pictures, but without the extented part (well actually they are Omegatoys  ::))

Rear no problem, when i use them on the front (not that often) i get a block of wood and rest it on the 1st cross bar, makes it up easy

I normally use two blocks of 3x2,and place em on the second rung up,and modified the stop at the top by cutting it down. :y

Indeed, don't use them that often, only time i think is for gearbox / exhaust work

You don't need an Irmscher front for it to hit the top of the ramps before your wheels do. An ordinary bumper will foul, as will a Senator's.
My extensions have cross pieces on them too, similar to the angled bit of normal ramps, that just hook onto a cross piece of the ramp. Made years ago when I used to have access to a reasonable metal store.

Im sure them or something similar would work  :y

I keep meaning to draw up plans for some low entry ones to be made for me - i always tend to have low cars lol i can just get the mig up on my smaller set of ramps, and thats partially because of the spacers making the track wider and giving the bumper a little more space on them

I use blocks of wood as mentioned above.  I don't like the look of those as they would be slippery when wet and not enough cross-members.  'Precarious' to sum up.

Don't you have to jack it to an enormous height as the wheel would drop as the suspension unloads.. :-/

The extensions are crap and WILL NOT take the weight of an omega  - I nearly wrecked the car using these as they buckled as I was driving up them >:(

They just sit on the ramps with a pice of flat plate/sheet so hold it in place.  :y

Now .. if you make them shallow enough to cope with a Irmscher front .... and the "price is right" .. I could be in the market  for some ramps with long extensions ......  :)  Might help you re-coup some of your costs ???

Andy .. I don't have ramps at all .. always used jack/axle stands ... but the idea of ramps with extensions is appealing ...  and if I can put some cash in Debs direction ....   :) 'tis better than giving it to machine mart or similar .. :)

Andy b's extensions look alot more substantial than the puny efforts in Jim's pic and obviously will take the weight of an omega  so those are the one's you should go for  :y

They were made with 30mm x 3mm angle and are 560mm long, for no other reason than the trolly they were made from was that long!  ;D annd are just wide enough to sit inside the ramps  :y
I'd buy ramps rather than trying to make them & just make the extensions. I know there's bu66er all to making them, but they use miles of angle.  ;)

My ramps are home made from my fabin days.
I made them longer than standard ones for the very same reasons mentioned in this thread.
As per usual, i went over the top in their construction & they weigh a ton ;D

I reckon a set of the ramps you see outside dealerships with 'this week's star buy' on them would be ideal at home! You'd just need somewher to store them!  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Your local steel stockest will sell you some & most if asked nicely will cut it for you. Though you'll only need 25X25X3 which you'd be able to cut with an hacksaw :y

There are some interesting products at www.restorationramps.co.uk

Of course a basic requirement for using their kit is a decent garage or at the very least a clear flat working area.

Neither of which I have  :(

Andy might license the concept, Kevin; in a Dragon`s Den kind of way........before you know it, he`ll be outsourcing production to a Chinese sweatshop for 15p. a unit (delivered). ;D

I use the cut-off saw or plasma cutter.....I`m too old for hacksaws! ;)

New car, promotion ramps here;

I was offered a set as a trial by another supplier, but having a gravel driveway and working from home I don't think it'd have the same effect  ;D
In hindsight I would have said yes to see if they gave enough clearance to work under a vehicle, I was thinking of them in the display purpouse only.

True, but probably a good investment if you have several vehicles and are always crawling around under them for one reason or another.
