Title: Worst car...
Post by: Kiksomass on 25 February 2010, 16:48:00
So on here we've first cars and 80's cars. But worst?...A Rover SD1, rust so bad that the spare wheel tray looked like a sharks mouth. I lost a whole socket set on the M1 near Hemel Hempstead through the gap! What a bag of bolts that car was :o :o

The worst isn't just one car, Ford Escort MkII, Ford Orion 1.6 diesel :(

Ford Focus also has to appear in my top 5. Horrid, horrid heap of junk. Miles better than the awful escort it replaced, but still woefully bad handling compared to other similar cars. And that 1.6 zetec has less power than my lawnmower.

I always fancied a v8 SD1.  I known they were a bit agricultural, even in their day, and the engine needed improving, but even now, would still consider one...

Would quite like a V8 P6 myself.

That's not a car, it's an automotive lobotomy! I guess, on the positive side, things can only get better if you own one of those. ;D

I had a 1.8 (non turbo) Escort diesel van for work for around 4 years.  I wrote it off 3 times apparently, but they kept fixing it up (an oddity with the company not having proper insurance (this was legal)).  Bloody awful thing. Used to drive everywhere in 3rd.  It couldn't maintain speed in 4th or 5th (with the weight I carried).  So everywhere on the engine governer in 3rd....

Mine you, we used to have races around the countryside in our previous Itals and Maestros, but the rule was you could only use 1st and 2nd gears ;D

So basically, we are saying then that the Vauxhall Omega is the pinnacle of motoring finnesse and the rubbish cars we drove in our history were just errors of judgement?
Or am I being ridiculous? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hmm. ;)

Omegas are nice while you're driving them but my previous car was a French one with lots of electrical toys. Had it for 7 or 8 years and put 100k+ on it and the only electrical niggle was a chafed wire and a relay failure.

Omega: 3 years and about 50k:

Crank Sensor
Wiper Motor
Driver's door central locking motor
Power sounder

No sooner to I get all the above fixed than one of the rear central locking motors has packed up. Oh, well, it was fault free for about a week. >:(

I never said the Omega was the best car I've had.  That accolade (based on distance covered (102k), time owned(10yrs), faults (HG x 1.5, fuel pump (warranty)) has to be without doubt, our little Rover 25.  Best handling car I've ever had as well.

If he breaked off i would'nt have cared less tbh but he came back, said it broke down, started again, i thought i was lumbered but still gave me the £200!!!! Dunno how far he got???

1991 Ford Escort 1.4GLX J123BNN was the most asthmatic car I have ever had the mis-fortune to drive. After 3 months it started rusting on the off side rear wheel arch and then the key collapsed in the fuel cap.The seats were awful and the ride quality was stuck in the seventies.

I'll second that one...  my first car was also an Orion... Complete with a leaky boot, a swimming pool in my spare wheel well and every bump in the road sent the back of the car across the road...  Such a stunning car, that when I did crash the car (into a hedge), it didn't even knock the hedge down (thankfully as there was a 15ft drop the other side)...

The thing that really pee'd me off was I had recently had a complete exhaust and rear springs fitted...

Worst cars for me were a Chrsler Alpine 1400, was our company secretatys car, maintained by the company garage, (My Dad was the transport manager covering 130+ vehicles) the car had never been over 50 mph, eveything electical seemed to pack up on me in weeks, alternator, starter, problems with hrad lights.

Other was my Brand Spanking Astra GTE, actually put me off Vx for a few years.  Was a produbt of a german steel strike from what the told, loeadsa probs including rust and a wiring loom meltdown when starting the car (or trying to)(and in a firking petrol station of all places )

Astra F/mk3, but only because my brother did tune it, and its true, if you tune it, it gets worse, he put an 2.0i Carlton/Omega engine in it, did a chip tuning on it, it ran well first. He also welded an mk4 Astra hood grill to it, put GSi bumpers on it and glued a diffusor and a splitter to it, then resprayed it with an Alfa Romeo effect paint and put some polished 16" Brock B1 on it.

A good Boyracer, right up to the moment, the oilpresure was gone and the crankshaft bent, the engine had an extrem unbalance, it lituarry shaked the windows out of the car, and of cause ran like a tractor.

So he put another c20ne in it, this time an even older one, whith a 135000 mileage before I got it from him.

It wont start everytime i was in a hurry, and broke down, when I driven a couple of times on short distances. Then the Valves became leaky, it had a poor fuel consumption of 20l/100km (about 11mpg). So I had refurbish the cylinderhead, where on other places the wheelarches startet to rust (thru the expensive alfa-romeo pearlmutt paint), so I welded it and resprayed the whole car, same colour. One week later I lost the GFK diffusor which was hotglued to original GSi bumpers.

In essence, it was a big pile of Problems.  :D

[/highlight]

Yep, 2 levers either side of the handbrake, left for the choke and right pulled a cable to manually bring in the pre-engagement of the starter dog with the flywheel, this then closed a switch on the motor and cranking ensued. Built to a price, this car was a complete POS!

Heater must be duff though.  Chap always wears a red wooly hat!   ;D

Worst I had was MGA840V.  Avenger Estate (or whatever re-incarnation of rustbucket of Hillman/Talbot/whatever).

Bought as a fill in car whilst I re-shelled a 6 month old Astra SRi.  Estate was handy for panel storage but, sadly, mainly as storage as the begger simply refused to run most times.  When it did, it was lumpy, misfired, hesitant and a general all round bag of bolts.  handling?  Suppose it did, but maily best when stationary....

Did I mention the water leaks and rust???

Was I ever glad to sell that nugget on?

Yup......   ::)

Difficult to say tbh. The Omega is definetely the most unreliable car I have owned, Ive never known a car need so much work need doing so often.
The most reliable car I owned was a Sierra but I hated it, it was so tedious in every respect, even the interior was hearing aid beige, but it never broke down despite the fact that it didnt so much have the bonnet lifted from one year to the next.
Also had a Crapi which I found totally tedious, but was also very reliable.

Montego estate in blue, bought in about 1997 ish, picked it up at an auction it was a G reg so not years old, ex taxi, gearbox, clutch, smelt of old dogs etc. Sprayed what needed spraying and it actually looked half decent, sold for £400 profit to some un-suspecting person who would've had nothing but trouble with it. Lucky to get shot of that I was.

All the pre 1980's cars I owned possibly with the exception of a towing barge Wolsey 16/60 (posh version of an Austin Cambridge). Apart from needing a trunnion replacing (aghh they were hard to do) it ran for years without anywork.

They all spent their time breaking down even more frequently than our Omega does now. The difference then was the number of times the part failure actually left you stranded. Cars have moved on tremendously since those days.
