Title: See, it's not only Diane who buy's lemons!
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 28 February 2010, 19:10:02
I took a chance on a cheap estate, on ebay. It was advertised as "all good".. but considering the relatively low price paid, I expected a few issues.

I bought the car unseen (it was cheap enough that, a viewing would have been cost prohibitive!)

The car:

Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi 110 Executive Estate, 6 months MOT, couple of days tax!

Black leather interior all plenty clean enough for year, with minimal wear to be expected.

Diablo red bodywork all straight, again minimal marks etc.

The issues:

1) Lots of play in NS wishbone rear bush. Wheel kicks right back!

2) Lots of play in rear NS wheel bearing.

3) Awful wheel wobble. Tyre was  visibly distorted, so had 2 x new ones on that axle and balanced - now better.

3) Bit of engine trouble. Hopefully nothing serious.

Firstly, the performance wasn't what I expected. OK, I accept I am getting in a French tractor after a near on 200bhp Miggy  :D but, from the reviews I've read etc, they all stated the 406 HDi was "effortless overtaking" and "Very swift" - I certainly wouldn't be overtaking anything in it anytime soon !!!! Performance seems "down".

Added to that, it seems to accelerate "roughly" when put under load, not sure if I'd describe it  as a misfire, or not. It seems to co-incide with when the turbo kicks in.

The EML came on today, so I need to find something to read the codes, and take it from there, I guess....

A full service and italian tune up hasn't helped really. Neither did a whole bottle of diesel magic in the filter.

Interestingly, it was given to me with the tank brim full of diesel!!! This has led me to question what he's been putting in there, and where from! I don't think it's had biofuel in it, and it isn't red diesel.

The rest of it, are all consumables, so don't really count - and include:

1) Discs and pads all round
2) Exhaust, cat back

Feel too rough this weekend to do any work on it, but next weekend Darth and myself are going to spend a day attacking it  :y

Don't suppose you know about oil consumption yet?

Hope you feel better soon :y :y

It is nothing serious, that I am sure of.

I'll probably wait until I am up at the man-in-pink's place, then we'll have a good look around it  :D

I406 HDi was "effortless overtaking" and "Very swift" -

With 110 horses i very much doubt that  ;D

Exactly... the 90 is not known for being slow.. so the 110 turbo direct injection should certainly not be a slug...  :-/

You want to try my 130 soon to be 150 Rover 25. It weighs about as much as a Ryvita when I haven't got any tools in the back. All I need to do now is put vented discs on the front to stop the dam thing :)
