Title: is it worth it
Post by: mark b on 30 March 2010, 20:49:46

£275 will be second hand engine from a breakers yard. Not allways a bad thing, but factor in a cam belt and tensioners.

You may get a better price from one of the breakers on here.

Fitting is fairly straight forward, if you are fit and active could probably do it yourself with an engine crane and a couple of ramps and a dry weekend.  ;D

Why do you need a new engine when it's just head trouble?

What are the symptoms and what is the reason the head gasket diagnosis has been reached?

This is worse than pulling teeth ...

OK so its a 2.5 V6 petrol ...

now WHY do you think the head gasket(s) have gone .. remembering you have 2 on that engine ......

I've just checked .. my mind reading licence has expired .. perhaps that's why I can't answer your questions .....

 ;) ;) ;) ;)

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

EDIT .. and the "2.5 V6" cryptic post has now gone as well !!!

It needs a structured , methodical diagnosis, at the moment we have little to go on...

You may well end up paying for a new engine, when all you in fact needed was a breather clean, and an oil change! (That's why you're getting mayo on the cap, and the blown gaskets)

Cream on top of oil cap is not always a head gasket failure. Omegas are well known for it. How can you tell if smoke is coming out the back or did your mechanic just tell you this. Omegas do blow out alot of steam in the cold weather and this is just normal. They do not tend to go thru head gaskets and owners get worried when they see the mayo on top of the filler cap. Frequent oil changes and having the breathers cleared will help cure this problem. Get a second opinion before you get any work done :y

Mayo in the oil filler neck and on the cap is due to car doing short journeys ;)

As I said in PM .. contact Mark DTM by PM and get it over to Nottingham ...

have a PROPER diagnostic done and then you'll know exactly where you stand ... half hearted guessing will get you nowhere .. :(
