Title: Direct Line Ripoff
Post by: star_whites on 11 May 2010, 13:00:24
I got my insurance renewal through last night. My current policy is 650 with my partner with 9+ no claims.

They have put the price up to £1630.00 !!!!

I have had no accidents, no claims, no points at all!

I rang them up and they just said its because of increases in premiums. I didnt expect it to drop as my partner is 29 and only been driving 7 years but bloody hell. I didnt want shares. Now shopping around, anyone got any suggestions??

Direct Line are a bunch of toss pots. TRIED the same with me also.

They say on the TV ads " and you won't find us on any comparison websites"....

NOT blinkin' surprising. They're too bloody expensive when "compared".

Used "compare the market" cost, £350, INCLUDING business use AND break down cover with Bell.

Directline were up around the £700 mark !

Try hill house hammond

They have a branch on west st in sheffield and a branch in broomhall/hill get a quote off one and then ring the other and see how much difference there is.

Just dont tell them what your 1st /best quote is coz then all they do is knock £5/10 off.

Pity there were no insurance brockers on here, potential 5000+ customers, quite a bit of "Club" business for them if there offered a good discount.

I find (for us) Swifcover come up consistently cheaper year on year, even their renewal price was competitive this year :y :y

I recommend the AA for quality insurance cover at sensible rates with them acting as a broker to get the best for you.

In fact this year my premiums have gone down from when I was running the 2.5 CDX to now running a 3.0 Elite 8-) 8-) 8-)

If you are interested ring the AA insurance line on 08705332211 ;) ;)

My renewal came through this morning from churchill £417.90 went on confused and have got plenty of quotes for £230 ish.
You will find most companies offer a discount on your first year then it will go up the second year even if you have no claims in that time they rely on people just not being bothered to shop around and just renew.
I am involved in the family insurance brokerage and can tell you the brokers get very little to discount with the money is all tied up in underwriting(uninsured losses etc) We do motor policies and after a few years of trying to compete with the big guns we now go for the specialized market even i as you can see insure my motors in the mainstream market.

been with direct line fo far too long, been meaning to leave them for years, owned by Royal bank of Scotland, they and several other well known insurance companys such as Tesco, who's insured seem stedfastly determind to drive into my car, are all part of the same shambles. A complete shower from start to finish.

Finally last week they doubled my premium for no particular reason, just like yourself. break em, now have a multi car policy with Elefant, part of the Admiral group i believe? saving some £600 on this years renewals, and 300 on last years policys.

Quick fit did pretty much the same to me I used Money Supermarket.com now with Churchill now paying £245 all in (not bad for a V6), saving me nearly £200  :y

This is pretty misleading as they also trade as Privelige Insurance - I have my Omega policy with them and when you call them you go through to Direct line.........  slightly sneaky  >:(

Ive started to look around and I think the biggest issue is a) having my partner on whos 29 and only been driving 7 years and b) using the car to comute to and from work.

Quotes are coming in around £800 for both of us. I have 9 years + no claims have no accidents or points on license. Ok I chose every optional extra but come on its a bloody rip off. Im paying more now then when I first learnt to drive and had a escort 1.6 turbo!  >:(

Seems extremely high... Mine is insured for myself and SWMBO, full NCD, she's only been driving about 9 years (although we are both over 30), insured for Business use as well as the normal SDP&C.

Have you tried swiftcover?
