Just put my 17 year old clockwork Merc through its
15th MOT. Had it since 2 yrs old, always serviced
it myself and its never failed yet.
It's a slow old 2.0l Diesel Auto with a 0-60 time of
circa 20 seconds ;D , but scuttles along at legal
limits all day long.
The only non-service item I've had to replace in 15 yrs
is a pair of engine mounts. It's even still on the original
discs which I inspected this weekend and stiil can't
fault. It's gone through 2 batterys, 1 exhaust system,
and a set of glowplugs and that's it apart from routine
filters,fluids and brakepads.
Why don't Mercedes make cars like this anymore? :-/
Edit: Forgot to mention, mileage is now at 151,000.

Reason.....
They are not making any money out of it on servicing, parts, breakdowns, and it lasts so well, people keep it for 15-odd years and don't buy another one!!
-
Nice when they keep going and going :y
Mick ;)

I had a 3.0 diesel auto W123 for years and never had a problem with it. It was mainly a tow vehicle and did lots of high mile motoway runs. Absolutely invinsible that car was!
-
Funnily enough, had the choice of miggy 3.0 elite estate and T reg 300TE est Merc when i bought mine. Merc had 248k on the clock, but you wouldn't know it, Miggy had 148k on a T reg.
I bought the miggy, they were the same price (roughly) but miggy was the best interior, bodywork, and least miles with best mot.
I reckon I made the right choice.

They rust worse than a Miggy too :y

a mate of mine has an 89 300d auto,265k miles and runs well but body is starting to fall apart now

They have a a 1998 merc at my local chippy, i've never seen a car so rusty, bottoms of doors, middle of the doors, around all four wheel arches & so on.
It's a mess ;D
-
I was running an 89 190e 2.0 before the miggy and TBH miss it a lot, built like a tank and was mint!
Paid £390 of the bay, ran it for near 3 years and sold it for £400.

Tie-ups with Chrysler!
As soon as Chrysler got involved, quality suffered a helluva lot!
Anyhow, nice to hear about your Merc - let's hope it sees another 15 MOT's!
My Dad bought a 1964/3 (C reg) 220 for £80 back in 1979. It was used as a chicken coop for years, but a good (and I do mean good!) clean up, a 35p cog for the distributer and a new battery, couple of brake pipes for the MOT and he it ran for a couple of years before he sold it to a guy who made him an offer he couldn't refuse..........
I wonder how many bodies the boot could hold - but definitely more than one!
