Title: Ford Cougar
Post by: Squealey on 02 July 2010, 18:20:33
Was taking a customer home earlier and talk turned to why he needed a hire car (I work for Enterprise Rent A Car). Turns out he has a 2.5 V6 Ford Cougar who's auto gearbox lost gears 3&4 last week.

He brought it at 6 months old for 11 grand and has done 126,000 miles in it. Until now it had been really reliable but the garage quoted him £1500 to repair it so hes just gone out and brought a very cheap runaround and wants shot of the Cougar.

It is MOT'd till January. Bodily it has a few scrapes and scuffs but it can mostly be polished out and the interior needs a good valet.

It has a set of aftermarket 17" alloys (Fox?) with 2x 2 month old Avons on the front and a rather smart looking Sony face off stereo.

He wants £100 for it, would I be mad as a box of frogs to even be contmplating it. It wouldn't be to replace the Omega (although never say never). Its just a challange that I like the look of.

Mondeo engine and box IIRC correctly. A box would be pretty cheap too, I'd snap his hand off could make a nice bit of profit on it  :y

Thanks for that Zulu77, have you missed me or something???? Tbh I haven't been avoiding the forum for any reason other than being so busy at the moment with work and the kids, I just never seem to get a moment to myself.

Thanks for the link Del.

Well, and im sure im going to regret it, but I took swmbo round to have a look at it, handed over 100 notes and its now sitting on my drive. Hell even if I scrap it for spares I should make a bit of a profit. Must say that V6 sounds sweet as a nut.

sounds like you got a good deal there! I have looked at the Cougar V6 before as they still look very modern and not a bad car at all.

Maybe get the box re-conditioned? sounds like the clutches have burnt out and shouldn't be that expensive to replace the internals.

Cougar built by Mazda, using alot of Mazda bits - did they just swap badges over?
Surprised there's no tale of the headlights going the way of the ear, apparently that was a very common, annoying and expensive-to-fix problem.

Shouldn't be hard to locate a gearbox though - have fun! :y

Be aware that the Ford/Mazda V6 is alot more brittle than the GM V6 , so make sure it gets checked over ;)

Thought I would add a couple of pics so you can see what £100 gets you these days.

I'll be honest, I dont think its going to be my cup of tea. The interior is woefully cheap in looks and construction plus the last owner seemed to have his dogs in it A LOT and I would be amazed if he ever cleaned it out. Its disgusting and stinks. Think I'll have to hire a wet and dry vac to sort it.

Still in a bit of a pickle as what to do with it. Seriously thinking of polishing it up really well, sorting the interior, and sticking it on Ebay for £200 start and seeing where it goes.

Yeh, you will find the inetrior almost falling off in your hands once they get to the 10 year old stage.

And changing a box on one is quite a task.....10 hours is not untypical so give your self a good few long days as its a sub frame out task.
