Tuesday yesterday so sloped off early from work to spend the evening at the gliding club as usual. Got in the Omega, key in ignition. Nope. >:( Couldn't turn the sodding thing.
Fiddled about for a while then raided the service department for something lubricant as a last resort. Bit of hellerine on the key made no odds. Out with the WD40 (grr).
Eventually (45 mins later) it turned, so decided to go home and fix it rather than risk another problem.
Got the lock barrel out, intending to clean out, deburr, remove all the WD 40 and re-lubricate.
More haste, less speed. One slip and boing! springs and lock levers everywhere. >:( Thus began the trial-and-error process of relocating the levers into their respective slots, and the grovelling around on the floor looking for springs. Eventually found all the bits and reassembled.
Problem turned out to be the pin at the back of the lock cylinder that allows the barrel to move slightly outwards to engage the steering lock in the "OFF" position. It moves up a ramp to draw the cylinder back in and this ramp had badly worn. A few minutes with a dremel and a fine polishing stone restored it to something that looked like it might work - for now.
Back together and working smoothly, I'm happy to say. :y
Seemed like an ideal opportunity to have a play with a variable intermittent wiper stalk as well, so will hopefully have that working today.
Just a reminder - if your ignition key starts to feel a little graunchy, sort it out while you still have the opportunity, and take your time disassembling the barrel. ::)

my old one feels a bit dodgy, but seems related to the gear selector not fully clicking into park rather than the lock.
But hopefully by the end of next week I wont need it again anyway :D

Ahh, I had the "no, I'm not letting you have your key back" tantrum a couple of years back. For future reference, there's a little solenoid right on the bottom of the lock mechanism that you can unplug if you get stuck with this one. :y

mine feels tight to turn in the current weather, only ever plays up when its warm, my old cdx was exactly the same to the point it jammed as yours had, 45 mins and some white grease through a straw later and away it went.

My Astra was always like that, reluctant to give the key back. But recently ..... 5 or 6 months ago .... after a good lubricating it has stated to behave, & there's a definitely click as you turn the key & it now give you the key back with no probs at all ....... :y
do we have a fingers crossed smilely ::) ;)

Oh damn,mine is now mostly jammed on key entry and turn only a couple of hours ago gave a light dose of WD.If its suddenly becomeing so common has to be temperature related like the idea of white grease think I have some in a aerosol just a micro sqirt

While on the subject of ign keys I really would like a key with a fold in bar. Who is it that does key mods on the forum?

My Astra was always like that, reluctant to give the key back. But recently ..... 5 or 6 months ago .... after a good lubricating it has stated to behave, & there's a definitely click as you turn the key & it now give you the key back with no probs at all ....... :y

I take it that's not an auto so won't have the interlock?
In that case, I would pull out the lock cylinder and give it a deburr and lube.

Mine played up after being parked in the sun.
Worth taking the barrel out and checking the pin at the rear of the barrel and its' corresponding cam in the barrel body.

Thanks Kevin,small delicate work to be avoided by me at present till arthur decides to ease off so I'll give the white grease a chance to see if it eases the roughness first thanks once again

Me but I have not yet done a 3 button one - not sure if there is enough room inside the casing.

white spray grease seems to have worked fine, used the thin delivery tube to get deep in the lock with a fine spray it's now much smoother with the notchiness gone just have to hope it lasts, don't really have much faith in this sort of quick fix as it will only work permanantly if the fault was caused by a lack of lubricant perhaps caused by the warm weather.Thought that would be the case as regards the key mod Martin thanks worth a try you never know untill you ask

What's the option if key still won't turn in ignition barrel after nearly 2 hours of trying, had no problems previous to yesterday when would'nt turn.
Car locksmith has quoted me £150 to release and clean barrel, ouch!

Try tapping the end of the key with something while you are trying to turn it. It might dislodge whatever's jammed.

Thanks for advice Kevin, had tried everything this site suggested finally this afternoon started it with friends help, had me moving locked steering wheel left to right from passenger seat while mate turned key in ignition repeatedly took about 5 second, have now taken barrel out and cleaned seems okay crossed fingers, hopefully thats £150 i won't have to spend.
