Title: LED Headlight Bulbs (Alternative to HID or Fila's)
Post by: Simon72 on 18 July 2010, 16:35:08
Right I know most people on here either have Filament Type Head Light Bulbs or HID Bulbs fitted.... BUT last night I saw a friend of mine who drives a Vectra that has Projector headlights with very bright lights.. I asked what bulbs he had fitted and he said they were the new technology H1 LED BULBS.

Advantages
Firstly they are cooler than Filament
Secondly ALOT cheaper than HID bulbs.

Disadvantages
You have to wait for them to be delivered from Hong Kong :-( if you want to save a little money.

So I have taken the plunge and ordered 2 FROM Hong Kong to see what they are link in an Omega, he says they didn't bring up any BULB fault warning on his dash BUT we will see when I fit them to my Omega.

I will give you all a comparison of light out put and quality once they arrive.

If you haven't see what they are like then have a look here.

Hmm. :-/ Can't see them offering a very good beam pattern as most headlight designs rely on a point source of light where the filament is located on a bulb. That will throw out light from its' entire length.

The peaky spectrum from LED lights probably don't make them ideal as headlights either. Too easy to miss something that's the wrong colour.

I also doubt they'd be road legal in the UK, and headlights do get inspected after incidents to determine if they were lit at the time of impact.

Will be interesting to see how you get on.

Kevin

I notice they mention no intensity figures or a 'wattage'

My experience of LED lighting has yielded pretty poor results sadly so will be interested to hear how you get on

For £2.50 delivered they have got to be worth a try!
How bright did they look on the Vectra, dya think they would attract attention from the Boys In Blue!?

You don't really see many Omegas about Wolvo, I'll look out for an Omega with very bright lights in the near future...

I agree with the beam pattern and depth of field issues, but I wonder if that type of bulb would suit a front fog lamp better?

I think the technology required to make this work effectively is somewhat more involved than a simple plug-in solution. :y

There may also be a problem with type approval.

Found this on one of the 4x4 Forums I am associated too.

A Defender fitted with LED Headlight Bulbs

Looks quite bright even in Daylight..

Also they are 'E' Marked and legal due to they are the correct colour.

I'll be more interested in how you find night time illumination.

Ultrabrite LEDs are always bright to look at, yet offer poor illumination ime

well i am hoping that the projector style headlights on the Omega will help intensify the light output, unlike standard car headlight reflectors.

So watch this space, I have only ordered them today so they will arrive in the next few weeks.

I will take a few pictures of before and after from in-front of the car also the light output spread on the road and on a wall

A major question on the "legality" would be the "E" marking .. or lack of it....

Bulbs and lenses must be "E" marked to be legal in UK .. the Landrover ones above are OK, the Audi ones will be no doubt .. but cheap imports from China ... somehow I doubt it .. :(

i have been asked to do this before failed miserably... :-/
will attempt tomorrow when i get back from work.
the headlights are very noticeable, however the rear is very subtle more of making a better distinction between tail/brake more effective at night but this helped prevent falling into that chavvy image by not being to sporty. if i succeed in photos will put in gallery to ecause loads have been done to it but im not very good at this sort of stuff joining this forum was technical to me!

If I can manage it then I'm sure it's within the ability of most other folk! Register an account with "Photobucket" (Google it), it's much the same as registering on this site. Then just upload any photos you choose from your computer and Photobucket will provide links that you can 'copy and paste' into any posts you make on OOF.
If you get stuck I'm sure some of the friendly folk on here will help.

By the way, if you like the look of the black leather in my Mv6 then it is for sale!

Out of curiosity I bought some:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Car-H1-HID-Xenon-White-25-SMD-LED-Bulb-Head-Light-Lamp-/140429454944?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20b23f6e60

And

Couldn't resist when I saw them for so little cash, have to wait and see what they are like when they turn up. Bought plenty of stuff from HK before from Ebay and never had any problems, in fact I have stuff arrive from HK before stuff posted from the UK :o

I think the "Easy to assemble" is broken English for "Easy to fit" got to love the Chinese ads.

I remember buying RC helicopter stuff, one of the shops motto's was "Have a super fun flying time" or something.

When mine arrive I will do a before and after fitting picture session also. Can't see them in Poundland, QD maybe ::)

Always made me laugh, trolling the various Chinese sites for my heli bits and bots, but they are spot on with delivery and what not, never had an issue.

Having said that, the LED blubs I have ordered are showing as dispatched so hopefully wont be too long before I get my mits on them.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they are like, though I'm not expecting too much ::)

OK bulbs arrived today, and well, bit of a fail really ::)

The 501 sidelight bulbs are slightly too big to get into the hole, and rather than get it stuck or once in there have it fall into the lamp it self I decided not to try and fit them.

The H1's are also a pig to get in but they do fit with some fiddling, but, the light output is barely noticable. Even in daylight my original bulbs cast a beam onto the wall, the LED did not. In fact I had to crouch down in front of the light to see if they were even on :o Also threw up a fail on the display. Not even worthy of me getting the camera out to take a pic.

Might be a different story with non projector lamps perhaps, dunno?

Just glad I didn't spend a fortune on them, worth a punt for a fiver I guess but my advice, save your money :y

My H1's also came today, same story :-(

Oh well at least I didn't waste a fortune.

Doesn't harm to have tried, it could have been a amazing success.
