Right me and Irmscher Jim had this debate...
If you had say 25k to spend on a new car tomorrow, what would you go and buy?
We couldn't come up with anything..
-
I honestly cant think of anything for 25k I'd buy. I have this discussion with blokes at work all the time. They take the piss out of me for driving 'an old mans car', and I retort by telling them that their Focus/Astra/307 is an uncomfortable wreck and I wouldn't have one in a million years.
25k doesn't buy a lot nowadays. Poor Spec BMW/Merc/Audi, or high spec smaller cars.
I'll stick with the 'old mans car' ;D
-
VW Passat CC GT is £25k new list
http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/vw-passat-cc-now-seats-five/248722
-
I wouldn't buy i BMW or a Merc, think there living on thier 'badge' have you seen how plastic a Merc is these days?
The only car i would go into a garage to have a closer look at i think is the new Passat CC...Think they are nearer 30k though

The GT might have a few Gizmo's 'as standard' but it is still poverty spec. You are looking at £39k+ to get a fully loaded Passat CC
-
i am plannig on buying a new car this year
I thought about an insignia 1.6t but i will probably end up with a 2.0 diesel
-
Mercedes C220 CDi or a BMW 320ed. Mind you the 320ed is £27,000 and my current C220 CDi is worth about 23/25,000 now and it's a year old. It's a tough decision this. Also to have the cars specified as I would want them, they'd be pushing £30,000 no trouble :-/
-
only sensibly priced new cars i would concider are the new shape passat or the new shape Honda accord, really like both when i see them on the road.
No idea on prices though, and suspect both estate models would fall short on space, i know the accord estate is really restrictive between the rear suspension turrets, also guessing both use a space saver spare making lpg'ing a problem maybe?
still nothing out there like the omega, both the above front wheel drive i think?
-
can't think of any new car I'd buy given any amount of money.
too many gizmos for my liking - I want.......
no air con
no alarms
no buzzers
no automatic anything
no traction control
no automatic heater
no auto-dipping mirror
no tyre pressure sensors
no auto-levelling headlamps
no memory seats
no auto gearbox
no EBD
no ESC
no stability control
...... I hope you're beginning to get the idea
-
no ac? break that. ;D

if Fred Flintstone made a v8 model....maybe ?

now you're talking - why do you think I drive a Holden, that doesn't even have adjustable-brightness instrument back-lights
-
now you're talking - why do you think I drive a Holden, that doesn't even have adjustable-brightness instrument back-lights
thats what puts me off the monaro, cant even close the windows with the fob. I assume the vxr8 is the same? at least thats got 4 doors though...

I'd close the windows with duct tape for that noise. ;)
In fact, must pack some duct tape in the Westfield for exactly that purpose. :y

What new car would I buy for £25k?
Ford S-Max TDCI Zetec 140 Auto. One of the nicest cars I have ever driven. Comfy, comfy and also very comfy.
-
Absolutely no idea
-
If Passat CC is too expensive then maybe the Highline Plus for £25k
http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/#/new/passat-saloon/which-model/compare/804
-
even closing windows with the key fob represents far too great a level of unnecessary complexity. all of my Omegas do that and I'ver never used it yet - what's wrong with just closing the windows before getting out ?
-
the new BMW M6 ....think i may have to raid the piggy bank tho to put to the 25k :'(
(http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n468/beemerdevil/M63.jpg) - heres the kiddie !! ;) 8-)

candidates.. edit : not for 25£K :-/
Honda 2.4 (auto >:( -no manuals here) which stops my apetite) but rarely needs repair and urban consumption avg 11-12litre for normal driving
Bmw 330i (manuals although rare but can be found would cost a fortune for repairs if I behave bad)
consumption 12-13 litre for normal driving
Subaru WRX (more suitable for daily use then the sti version- but nearly all of them are modded and hard to find a good one.. and urban consumption over 15 litre which I'll easly reach 20-25 litre as I wont drive normal wth this car ;D
if I sell both cars and add some, I can buy one of those..
but..
with all those models problem is I'll still need a second car..imo none of those are suitable for daily use in heavy traffic.. :(
diesels , are out of question.. I hate their noise..
edit- color choice either white or silver ..no dark colors anymore..fed up of washing everyday..
-
25k........................
Sad to say, would probably have to be a F*RD S-max the same as Ron.
Spacious, load carrying, relatively cheap to run and insure, does EXACTLY what it says on the tin, and unfortunately, there is no VX contender to give it any challenge. the principle of the Sintra would have been OK if the actual car wasn't so dire, especially in 3.2 V6 auto guise if it HAD been any good.
-
Well, no way on earth would I pay 25k for a shopping / commuting car. It might have to be something less practical.... :)

Kevin try a modded wrx sti.. those japanese coke cans turn like a train on rails , some of them exceed 600 hp (with mods) and 0-60 2.9 secs :-? :P
and they can pull a big truck on ice :o
so not that bad ;D
-
If I still had my fun hat, I would have bought a Carver One.

Maybe a more realistic price to by a new car would be £32,000 and I believe was the price of an Omega Elite at one point.
Elite model type Price list / date
18/10/94 20/10/98
3.0i V6 4-door saloon £27,385 £31,475
3.0i V6 5-door estate £27,385 £31,475

2002 prices similar

No matter how fond I may have once been about the Vauxhall Omega, I would never in a million years have paid anything like £32k for one, even if it was 24k gold plated with a diamond and shag pile willy warmer.
I think I may have once actually splashed out a whole £1000 but I was very unstable, highly irresponsible with money and frankly easily led.
£32k spare change? I would probably buy an idustrial harpoon so I could rid the world of the rather whale-like Jo Brand.
Or, perhaps a giant Venus fly trap to put outside Number 10 Downing street, then everyone will thnik Tony has moved back in and left the wife at the door.
Or maybe a cement lorry full of quicksand to re-do the beach in that 'go compare' advert so that Robinso Crusoe and Friday could p!ss themselves to death whilst watching the fat geezer singing with 400 tonnes of slightly moist granuilar material slowly filling him up.
Nurse...................... :-X
-
I would be very tempted to get an Alfa 159, but not too sure about the reliability :-/. Nice to drive and better looking than a BMW.
-
I would buy 4 door diesel estate, with towbar, roof rails, big load area, auto with tiptronic, nice cool air con, with privacy glass and lots of legroom, preferably rear wheel drive, but not important. Does that exist (for £25k)? Oh it would need cruise aswell, not Saab (not the quality anymore, BMW,Audi,Volvo, massive service costs. Is there a VW or mercedes that fits the bill? I would need to take the badge off though ;D
-
This, OK its not new now but i don't care
(http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w245/andyc2411/Opel-GT_2007_800x600_wallpaper_03-1.jpg)
I've already got a 1970 GT so a new one would make a nice set
Andy

Looks very nice Andy, but what is it? (Sorry if I'm showing my ignorance here :-[)

Quite fancy trying one of those too. I think the result would either be love or sea-sickness. ;D
Kevin
-
or this one but i don't think i'll get it for 25k
(http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w245/andyc2411/Irmscher-GT-i40_1-1.jpg)
With this as a power plant
(http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w245/andyc2411/Irmscher-GT-i40_6.jpg)
LS1 V8.
Irmscher made this as a special for the 40th
Oh both are 2008 Opel GT's Which were only available in Europe and the US as the orginal and they were all built in the US on what was called the KAPPA floor pan
GM stopped production when they started having trouble the other year which is a pity, oh and the are all LHD only
European cars had the all alloy 2.0 16v Tubro lump kicking out around 260ps and the US got the 2.4 16v lump without turbo, same lump as the Antara 4x4
Cheers
Andy
-
I'm with you Kev, i'd spend all day going roind the roundabouts.
Did you ever see the Top Gear test on these?
I think our own Andy B has a thing for them as well
Andy

i have to say, if i had £25k, i definately wouldnt buy a new car!
there's an unreal amount of second hand metal my £25k would go on
-

YES!!! i'd have a scooby RB320 (was never a fan of the impreza till i saw one of these in a sainsburys car park) 8-)
-
2 of us at work were chatting - neither of us know what we would buy next - he has a P reg 318is coupe
-
Well some interesting thoughts... i still have no idea what i'd buy
-
If the budget was upped to around £35,000 I would have one of these.

And if I spent that much on it I can call it a car if I want to. :P :)
No idea which new car I would spend the money on. They all look the same to me and mostly wwd.
-
I have chosen not to get another new car, currently a Citroen C4 Grande Picasso (Lease) I could not decide what to get so bought an 03 Omega. Which reminds me the Citroen must go back, a month overdue now, authorised.... :)
-
Had I not been in the process of ordering another Toyota I would have given the most feature laden Insignia tourer, available for the money suggested, a go. :y
-
If the budget was raised to £32000 I'd buy a new 520d M Sport with professional sat nav, or a 525d SE with professional sat nav. Good thing with the new 5 series is standard it comes with leather, front & rear PDC and Bluetooth, only problem is the nav is expensive.

No!! 25k
;D ;D

I guess I put forward best suggestion then - on topic and within budget - Passat Highline Plus or CC GT!!

Off topic - Just noticed
Drives: Elite 3.2 V6 Irmscher, Phaeton V6 Diesel, Signum 1.9cdti
Not so much speed performance as diesel cant be compared to petrol, or can it.? But more compare comfort, space, etc
How do the 2 compare,?
-
Difficult to answer Mr Skruntie's question precisely.
The Phaeton was an Omega replacement for size and comfort and long journeys. It is also very quick but a consideration was to get better mpg consumption than Omega without having to drive carefully.
I think the answer on peformance is that as I like to drive smoothly (i.e. rarely used sport mode on Omega in 8 years) there is effectively no difference petrol to diesel in my case but getting say 10 mpg or so better (Phaeton is a very heavy car so not that effcient).
For info the Signum does over 45 mpg but is not as comfortable as Omega or Phaeton.
-
I would go down the route of the Skoda Superb Elegance... Available in both Estate and Saloon guise, with a 2l Diesel giving 170 bhp for 25k, plenty of toys and suitable reliability....
-
I'd go for an Audi A6 Avant, 2.7-3.0 Petrol or Diesel, slightly second hand as a like for like replacement, I think.....
Or, if feel reckless, an old Maserati Quattroporte...
Not sure I'd buy new, given the 2.0 SE Nav Insignia I saw the other day broke this budget.....
-
i would spend the money on my cdx and buy the holy grail of
omega owners THE WOOD STEARING WHEEL
COLIN 8-) :y
-
i like the chrysler 300
but when things go wrong its very expensive to fix :-/
jag xkf
-
I would probably buy the new Honda Accord, think it looks great
-
I'd buy a 2nd hand car, and pay off a bit more of the mortgage!
I sure as hell wouldn't by that heap of useless junk Focus based carrier. Neighbour has one. What a PITA that is.
That said, I wouldn't have anything with the word Focus on it. Been there, done that, somehow survived the ordeal. Never again.
If I HAD to have a new 25k car, I'd look at a poor mans A4 2l diesel, complete with Skoda badge....
-
25K in UK.. and with UK fuel prices..
deffo a second hand newish m3 ..
and some money will be left for expensive repairs and fuel ;D

Can't, due to the badge spelling P-R-A-T on the bonnet... ...though will concede that the M series are nearer to proper BMW's than the usual shite that rolls out of their factories....

I think our own Andy B has a thing for them as well
Andy
I thought they were fantastic things. Only the Dutch could've come up the the idea ..... what were they smoking? ;D ;D ;D
Expensive though for a toy.

I like them,pretty rare though

After giving this a great deal of thought because this is going to come up in the next few years, cos miggies (much as I love 'em) won't see my working life out.....Its got to be a big VOLVO V70 estate. there just isn't anything else that carries as much, munches the miles, and has the longevity. Only thing wrong is its front wheel drive, and i can see problems with the weight I carry up all those twisty welsh mountain roads.........but I suppose the Police carry as much as me, and it seems to be OK for them :-/
-
I'm considering an off roader unless VXR8s get really cheap

suppose its too much to ask that they consider doing an ESTATE version????? ;D ;D ;D

Sadly only a concept according to this

it would definately be a Jag xkr i dont mind second hand.... i nearly got it earlier this year but was persuaded by her indoors to get a car each so i ended up with a ford mondeo 2.0 ghia 03plate and an omega 2.2 03plate and a honda cbr 1000 bike ... all of which are great but still dream of the xkr
-
Actually, the Chrysler 300c estate with the mercedes 3 litre V6 TD (in Black with big wheels) wouldn't be too bad either............
Anybody know much about 'em??
-
I'd have a BM 5 series estate any day, don't care what TB says about 'em. It's the car the Omega wants to be
-
£16,000 for hte cheapest VXR8
