Title: VIP sales weekend - local VX dealer
Post by: Dave Elite on 15 September 2010, 13:44:48
I have been 'invited' to a 'special' promotion at the local dealer for being a 'loyal' customer - ok I bought a car nearly 5 years ago from them.

Anyway, apparently it isn't going to be advertised in the local paper or other media and I have to book an appointment. Also, it is promising great deals on sales.

Now, whilst I am not fully convinced by this latest 'offer', I am thinking about buying a replacement car for the tired Vectra (wifes car)

Her 1.8, LS, 04 reg has now done 134,000 miles and needs approx £600 spending on it pretty soon (if I do the work myself) to get it back to near perfect condition.

4 tyres
2 rear track control arms
Front and rear ARB bushes
Front drop links
Rear wheel bearing
Wiper linkage (I may be able to repair satisfactorily)

This is apart from the running issue of camshaft sensor circuit malfunction (P0340) that I don't know what is wrong, and neither does the dealer close to work.

SO, do I bite the bullet and replace now? A quick look on Vauxhall's 'what's my car worth' gives a trade in value of around £1250 - £1500 between poor and average condition.

The thing is, the car is in good condition, interior is almost unmarked (apart from wear to steering wheel) and outside is in good condition too. Power train is also in good condition (apart from P0340). Infact, everything else is in good condition and really doesn't look like it's done the mileage quoted.

So, the wonderment is, do I replace, what with and do I trade in or break to Vec?

My budget is not huge, maybe 8K + Vec

Decisions, decisions...

8k would get you so much you probably wouldn't have imagined. What do you fancy.. petrol, diesel, saloon, estate, 2 door, 4 door?

Does it have to be a Vauxhall? You could get a stormer of an e39 530d or 530i M-sport for 8k and still have change for a holiday and re-map! :D

I would have word with Perrys in Barnsley about best they could do for Insignia.

I dealt with them when I bought Signum 3 years ago -my local dealer offered nothing for old car and wanted high price on Signum - Perrys were straight came up with a fair price without seeing car. I dealt only on phone on basis if I did not like car they offered we both walk away - drove up following day and went away very happy.

You might have to go a bit above your £8k but Insignia is almost in your range as a natural replacement for Vectra.
