Title: Timing Chain Rattle
Post by: belldarr on 08 October 2010, 18:47:35
Hi all, does anyone know of any oil additive that can quieten down timimg chain rattle?  Nothing to do with any of my cars but someone I work with has a VR6 Golf that has a slight rattle from the timing chain due to a slightly worn guide (common on those engines apparently).

The only fix is to replace guides and chain.

If it could I wouldn't mind a can. :y It'd save me the job of dropping the engine from SWMBO'S Smart Roadster  ;) ;) ;)

Thanks for the advice people - he is planning to get the guides and chain replaced when he is away in December, but I remember in my old Ford Cortina days of using something called molyslip for the rear Diff when that started whining - that never worked either lol

At least the sprockets & timing chain are only £84+vat from the dealers ........ plus about £40 fro the 'drop bolts' which allow the engine's subframe to be lowered to do the job.  :y  :y
