due to the silly price of fuel ive no choice to part with my omega and get a family diesel car as iam spending around £350 a mth on fuel. two days ago i looked at a 2001 "51" laguna 1.9 dci estate nice car from a garage. i was offered £250 part exchange for my 2001 omega 2.2 petrol with fsh ! yeah its not a mint low mileage car but come on its got to be worth more than that hasnt it? i was hoping to draw around the £700 as a private sale so surely it must be worth £500 as a trade in so laguna on the back burner and it looks like its going on ebay ironicly i looked at keeping the omega as its ideal for my family (way too many kids) and buying a cheap banger just for comuting and 80% of bangers without tax or mot were around or exceeding £200
wasnt impressed to say the least ! >:(

That just sums up the stupidty of it all. It doesn't make a blind bit of sense whatsoever! :-/
-
The real irony is that is actually LESS than the scrap value.
Also, beware Lagunas of this age - the smart card thingy is very fragile and expensive if it goes wrong.

I agree,I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole, lots of issues both electrical and mechanical
-
i'd echo above, you will spend what you save in fuel in fixing the damn thing.

Good to know i made the right choice then. :y

I can't afford to swap, car is worth little and the extra fuel is less than the HP for something newer.
BTW convert the 2.2 to LPG
-
I agree re converting to LPG. Admittedly it has gone up at present, but its still close to half price petrol. So my 30mpg is effectively nearer to 60mpg. If you want a look at my installation, I'm just over the M606 from you.

Yep had a late shape laguna bloody card reader went wrong all the time thats when you could stop it having all the other electrical gremlins french cr** !!!!! :'(

my brother has just looked at a new car today, different dealer and was offered £400 px on his rough 1.8 R reg vectra estate with a mot until end of jan its on a cat c due to either the bump on the front or the 1 in the back and doesnt like ticking over when stopping at junctions
how much is a lpg kit are they worth getting 2nd hand ones? and would it have to come out of a omega with same engine, iam a bit blind on it as its not something ive ever looked into, and the main concern would be losing boot space
at the mo its looking like the omega is staying and iam going to get some overtime in and buy a cheap van for comuting and odd jobs as i do a bit of plastering now and again
i was thinking my car was worth around £700 realisticly ? but when you look at what you can buy for £700 theres no question of getting rid at the moment - no way am i selling and ending up with a clapped out R reg mondeo for the same money
stuff the petrol prices, wont beat me just yet :y
-
LPG is definately the right answer at present if you DIY for costs
-
Look into the costs a little deeper.
Work out what your Omega is going to cost in extra fuel per year compared to the new car (£200??)
How much are you going to spend on the new car? what is the loss of interest on that money (or the cost of borrowing it) Add that into the equation.
Add in the depreciation per year of the new car. (£1000+ /yr? )
The Omega doesnt look expensive anymore and is more comfortable, better equipped, handles better, drives the correct wheels etc.

I completely agree ... apart from the £200 ;)
My Omega costs me twice as much (in fuel) to go to work & back. It's a round trip of 45 miles which is approx 2 gallons in the Omega but only a gallon in the diseasal Astra. Due to shifts I go to work 204 times/days a year so I save 204-ish gallons a year :y :y

I'd offer a small bit of advice;
As a motor trader I have no qualms with taking a p/x. However, I will always try and be fair and offer a reasonable price. However, I would offer less than I could get the vehicle from auction. So, if I need to dispose of the vehicle I can send it to auction and not lose out.
I would suggest entering the vehicle into auction yourself. You will get more than a p/x offer typically. You will have to pay to enter it, with fees etc...but it can work out well for you.
Auction doesn't mean cheap always. If you have a room full of 100 plus people all trying to make a living they will all consider the vehicle coming in and sometimes things cna get interesting. If I go to auction for a particular vehicle, I will come away with it no matter what. On a 2003 3.2 Elite with low miles I will always get it, out bidding anyone else, even over £3000 because I know what I can do with the vehicle.
I would suggest you don't try and sell though British Car Auctions (BCA) They are excellent, but not geared for the private seller. Try a local auction first, if in doubt anyone can give me a call and I'll see what I can do.
Remember, it's still your car, £250 is a stupidly low offer even considering profit margins and all other things people don't think about.

those sums work pretty well for me as well Andy, locally my mig does 22-23 mpg and my 406 does 46-47mpg,what I've saved already has paid for the pug even taking into account road tax(insurance doesn't figure as its traders)
-
£200 is that all sheesh. mind you i think the most i got offered from a dealer for mine was £750 ::)
id rather hang onto it thanks. its ridiculous for the amount of extras you get, but it is a bit crippling on the fuel :(
-
The cost of running a car will almost always work out cheaper than replacing it.
2nd hand will always have issues, not always obvious, as I'm sure Vamps would testify :-/.
New is even worse. Not only do you have to pay for it in the first place, but it will still need fuel, insurance, main dealer servicing to preserve the warranty(even though you should be able to get it serviced anywhere >:() And to top it all, it will never be worth more than you owe on it.
Even in my case doing 1000+ miles a week, the £500+ per month that I'm not paying on car finance buys two weeks worth of petrol. It's not rocket science, but I like it :D
