Ok, from memory thats the 20NE engine (non cat convertor).

Have a litle look here and check for fault codes using the instructions

http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm

I would suspect the coolant temp sensor

how much did it used to consume?

miles per gallon?
kilometers per litre?

how much does it now consume?  or has it always been like this?

have you checked the car for fault codes? as linked by Mark DTM, if so what were they?

is the car well serviced?  filters? spark plugs?

You haven't told us the exact problem yet, without good clear information it is impossible to help.
