Title: Astra G 1.6 thermostat change
Post by: M on 29 January 2011, 11:54:55
Hi

Just wondered if anyone can help with getting the thermostat done on our 1.6 Astra as I prepare to sell it to get an Omega again?

I think its the type which is under the cambelt, but the cambelt was recently done so wont need changing

Please let me know if you can help or if you know anyone who may be able to....been quoted £200 to sort it at the garage !!!

cheers

Martyn

From what I can see in Haynes is the belt needs removing from the 8 valve SOHC to get to the stat, but on the 16 valve engine it looks quite accessable.  :-/

If its the 8v you can get a thermostat to fit in the top rubber hose just a few inches from the original  thermostat by the cam belt. It just slides up inside the hose and is clamped with a jubilee clip..

Just search on Ebay for Astra thermostat fix or google it...

I fitted one to our Astra as it had only just had the cambelt changed and didn't want to take it apart again. Its been fine since I fitted it.

Interesting that Weds, just googles it and it seems to be a common problem and quite a reliable if unusual fix

Cheers

Yes it is very common, along with ECU failures :-( All because they bolted it onto the end of the air intake...

Yep its a 1.6 Active, my dads old car.

Its a 53 reg and he was offered only £1500 to part chop it against his new Astra so I thought "sod it" and took it on

Our MV6 was leaking water, smoking and cam cover gaskets had gone again, and dads car has no issues like that at all.

Sad to see it go, but I want the space and power of an Omega again!!
