Title: Project B - 1995 3.0 Elite Estate (56k warning)
Post by: tunnie on 17 August 2006, 18:26:13
1995 3.0 Elite Estate Manual - Black Leather Interior

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Well I got it, paid £299 on 'Buy It Now' off fleabay... was expecting a shed.... and welll its kind of a shed  ;D

Good Points:

When I arrived to pick it up it had 30 Litres of fuel in it!  :D

3.0 V6 Manual, according to the trip computer i averaged 37.5 mpg on the way back!!  :o

Someone has installed projector headlights on it

All 4 tyres have plenty of tread, but the alloys have gone walkies  :-[

Cruise control works

Air-con acually blows ice cold!!

MID in better condition that the '98 Reflection, hardly any dead pixels

Leather in very good condition, just needs a clean, as does the floor carpet.

Boot carpet bit diry but no rips. - good clean should fix that

Bodywork is in better nick than project A, only 1 main scratch. It has less rust than the 1998 Reflection!!!

Most of the interior bits intact are in good condition, just dirty

It has the 'rare' window de-mists on the back door cards.

Exhaust in good conidtion

Bad Points

It was an auto but now a manual, after starting at some services 'Auto Geabox' appeared on the MID  :-?

Millage says 66k, but i think its more like 166k!! - Not sure what to do about that sell as 66k?  :-/

Heavy 'Tapping noise' under acceleration. It sat at 75mph easily, still feels powerfull wanted to give more. - Can't hear it on idle, mainly between 1.5 - 4k... but as i said motorway cruising its fine.

Sunroof not working (you can hear it clunk - so its not a reprogram)

A lot of electrics are not working:

Both front seats, do not move at all with any of the button pressed. Seams odd both are completey dead, but i checked all the fuses all fine (remove and inspected by eye :-/

Windscreen washer jets not working, but 1 wire seams to have been cut  :(

No Radio, and front speakers missing - Some god awful wiring on the loom its a right mess...

Rear boot lock a tad 'sticky'

Strip of plastic between the front light and bumper on the drivers side is the wrong colour.

Bodywork looks tidy, as you say, a bit of a clean inside. Get some speakers from scrappy, and a stereo, should sell for reasonable profit :)

There is not the rush on the sale on this one as it's taxed & Mot'ed until december.

Things to do:

Radio - Need as cheap one, there were Vx ones at my scrappy, but with no codes  :-/

Speaker Grills - They look differnt to the Reflection ones, its not a bose system, but the front grills look differnt somehow

Polish it up, and try and get the eletrics working.

Try and get if fixed and sold within 14 days like the last one....

Cheers m8... be great if it works. Just got to figure out the god awful loom wiring in there at the moment.

Its also got some kind of micky mouse alarm system with sensors on the back windows and wires trailing under the boot carpet

Plan A: Fix it up a bit and sell it on. If you bought it with 66k and the MoT's match, then advertise it the same. If anyone asks if it is genuine, you were told so but cannot guarantee it obviously. Tapping? Ignore. Just clean it up a bit and sell it as is. Don't mess about with the radio and stuff mate, makes no difference to the price. Change the boot carpet, easy job and about £10. Straight into AutoTrader for £595 and double bubble this week.

Plan B: Spend a fair bit doing all the 'jobs'. Even put an autobox back in cheply enough if you wanted to. Radio, speakers, sort the seats out. Loads of WD40 on the motor ends then an allen key to start the, moving again. Sunroof, leave it!

Plan C: Strip it. Gearbox, seats, computer, radiatorts, lights, panels then get towed away.

Plan D: Sell it on exactly as it is on Ebay. Put a BIN price of £495 and make a tidy bob or two.

Plan E: Sell it to me for £30. ;)

Humm i don't think i will be doing plan E  ;) , it had £30 of fuel it in when i picked it up!!, well chuffed. Only cost me £23 in the train fare + £2.50 car parking to collect it.

You seriously think it will got for say £500 even with the radio in bits??

Boot carpet is in good nick, good clean with the Dyson and it should look good again.

I have to wait for the Log Book to arrive, so might as well fix it up best i can until then. Have to investigate the seats, as that will really let down a sale. Can't see any allen key sockets must have another good look. The seats don't even make any noises... just silence?

As for the tapping, i guess its just age. My dads old pre-faclift 2.0 GLS did it after 100K plus...

Early Elites didn't have climate, so thats fine :)

Definately an Elite - the rear window demisters were only ever found on that model.

Well good luck with project B tunnie.

That is good economy - my 2.5 does not do that admitted mine is an auto but even so.

Anyway, I went to my local yard last week and there was an M reg elite saloon in there.  Although the interior is cream leather, it may yield some useful parts.  If you want anything give me a shout.  It was complete (apart from audio and Cd changer) when I was there but that may have changed now of course.

She puts up with a lot, all the mud i bring in... and shouting and cursing when working on the car...

My dad just got back from the Isle of Man, he has a big project up there at the moment. Spends all week there, comes back on weekends.

He left on Monday, I had the Reflection in the garage, in the time he's be away i've sold it and bought another!! ;D

He also suggested while we have an estate, clear out all the rubbish in the loft!! - Got me a 300 quid bin lorry with leather seats  8-)

Well, I've seen the car, and its not too bad.

We've had a little tinker today and resolved some problems.

Remaining bad points:
EML on - air intake temp sensor reckons its at 350F. We'll try and get one from scrappy.
Washer pump seized, again replacement required from scrappy.
Leccy seats - nothing worked, we've now got most passenger side working (front height is still seized), drivers we haven't touched yet.
Leccy mirrors - may be related to drivers set.
Tyres are borderline.
Stereo not working (loom needs reconnecting, looks like its had an aftermarket poorly fitted).
Unlikely the mileage is correct.
Noise from passenger side bank exhaust - it may be just the headshield rattling
Bodywork is reasonably tidy (few rust patches), currently has projector headlights (recommend changing for cheap headlights, and flogging projectors).

All in all, not a bad car at all - the sort I would happily have as a project and tinker with it until everything works.

Twas my fee for reprogramming MID telling it it no longer had an auto gearbox to lose the message on the MID.

I was surprised how many systems on board this 1995 car that the Tech2 (1997 onwards) would talk to.  It was only the ATWS (IR type fitted), Sunroof, and Leccy seats (though they may not be getting power) that it would not talk to...

I reckon it probably would. But it was raining (hence not fixing drivers seat).  My gut feeling is that its the motor/gear mechanism thats seized, rather than the roof, but until removed, can't say.

Personally, I'd have it apart and fix the problem, but I know tunnie is keen to sell on quickly...

Which one?!

One's 18, low mileage and needs running in a bit.
One's 25, meduim mileage, cracking bodywork, good trim and, er, fantastic ride
One's 40, but the best cared for - Many previous owners - high recent mileage mostly clocked up by me - will keep going forever.

Make your choice...

Mrs TheBoy's brother tests car safety and durability etc for a living. That means crashing cars and setting off airbags all the time. Now thats my idea of a job - non stop destruction :D

I was told when I fitted my seats that if goes off it could take your head off, whether there is any truth to it i dont know but I took the necessary precautions anyway.

Good Luck with the seat removal I had fun with one of the seat floor bolts and in the end needed to drill it out as the head of the bolt didn't like the star bit I was using.
