Mine had a K&N filter when I bought it.
A mate said to me that he had one in a TR7 and it incresed fuel consumption rather then reduce it?
Have any of you tried both (standard/K&N) in your omega and noticed an increase/decrease in mpg?

General opinion is to steer clear of K and N filters as the oil in them can bugger up the MAF sensor. Standard vauxhall air filter changed regularly is the best thing for MPG as well as other service items :y

iv used them befoer and doesnt make a differance to fuel

You might get a bit more if you drop something like a Green cotton filter into the airbox but never put any sort of oil on it because it will destroy your MAF ;)

And it won't filter properly if it isn't oiled. So best avoided then!

umm so what are the symptons of a ruined MAF sensor?

Hi, symtoms of a knackered MAF sensor is similar to a misfire. If you unplug the connector on a faulty MAF sensor the engine will run better - at least that's how I diagnosed it on my VR6 mk3 golf.
Personally, I like the K&N filter, the standard air filters are no good if you get them wet - serves me right for driving through fords. I've had fewer MAF failures with a K&N vs paper element. New K&N's are factory oiled, so you only oil it at the service interval.
Not tried a K&N in an Omega yet.
Almost failed to mention - I used a direct replacement panel filter rather than the "performance" type

The "performance" type are certainly a hiding to nothing unless you can duct cold air to it and ensure that it's isolated from warm engine bay air (otherwise you'll lose a lot of power to lower air density). Even then, the OEM panel filter is not restrictive, so you'll gain no power.
The panel type? Given that the OEM filter is both huge and cheap you will again gain nothing, and have the disadvantage that your air filter won't work unless you oil it, and risk killing the MAF if you do...
Fuel consumption will only really be affected on older carb'ed engines where the air filter might throw the tuning of the carb out. On an Omega, I'd expect to see no difference at all.

Generally speaking, and not in relation to omega, it's considered that oe filters are a little restrictive, hence k+n flow more air and hence more fuel, more power, worse consumption if that extra power is used. They work well on some engines.
Omega induction system is huge. The restriction is said to be exhaust related, possibly manifolds, so any induction mod for extra power will be a waist of time and money, as said.
