Title: Manifold gasket at the same time?
Post by: smoothomega on 11 July 2007, 20:28:33
Weather permiting this weekend i will be doing my breathers and now leaking rocker gaskets, however i do have a slight blow on the o/s manifold gasket that is noisey on start up but does go after a few mins when all is warm and expanded. The question is do i do the gasket at the same, however i have heard that if the studs are broken or snap then it is a head off job, which i cant afford to happen at the moment as the car will be needed again at 4.30 monday morning. So, is the head off sinario correct? and should i go for it or not :-/
Cheers, Jez

I personally feel that, if you get snapped studs, you need to take the head off to do a proper job of drilling and re-threading. Others may disagree, but that's personal opinion.

And on a V6 - you don't just do one head....  ::)

The drivers side one is not so bad, but you still need to strip all the inlet/plenum off, and get the rear  coolant transfer pipe off..

Suggest taking your time - if you're going to be against the clock, and it's your first time, it won't be ideal :)

Mine just passed MOT with blowing manifolds today.  My plan is to wait 3 more years until the cambelt is due again and if I still have the car I may worry about them then . . .  [smiley=evil.gif]

Not as embarassing as having to borrow a car 4 times to keep getting more carbide bits to drill out the studs.   :-[

If it's that loud the studs are defo gone.  Be ready to take off the heads when you do it.  :'(

Consider that you have a later Omega with the improved head studs which, I am yet to see break.

I personaly would do it.......do you want a spare prepared manifold to fit as I think I have one which I can flatten in preperation.

Shame you didn't live a bit closer to me, we could have had a ' Change the o/s manifold gasket on a  2.5 mini facelift with improved head studs party ' at the weekend  ;D Got to do mine on the project car weather permitting  :-/

If he doesn't - then I'll do it...

But I don't have any kit that could drill it in-situ - so it will mean pulling the head...
