Title: golf gttdi hard changing gear
Post by: handy on 10 June 2011, 20:08:19
Evening everyone,

This is not about anything vauxhall but my partners golf gttdi but as you lot are a bunch of clever fellows when it comes to any probs ive ever had then you might be able to help me with this one,

Hiya guys and gals :-))

I changed my clutch pedal the other week as the bracket on the back of the pedal snapped and so purchased a new pedal and all the bits that snap off when they go,  Took me a few hrs but all back and all good so i thought :-((

Before that day of me changing the pedal it was going into gear sweet as a nut and now since is hard to change gear ,  you got to real push it into gear and from first to second seems to be the worse,

Is this a coincidence and something else has gone wrong like the slave or master cylinder or is it something simple that i have or havnt done,   Aslo when me and my brother was fixing the pedal he was under the bonnet messing around and was moving the gear linkage by hand,  well i think thats what it is,   its the bars above the gearbox,   I dont know if that has anything to do with it or not but thought to mention it just incase.

Hopefully someone can help

Thanks

I don't believe in coincidences... sounds to me like the clutch might not be fully disengaging. Did your brother adjust the clutch cable to make changing the pedal easier?

no,  he never altered anything just moved the arms that move the gears i guess,   but he never adjusted anything,   just rang him and asked :-((

that's no coincidence, you need to first look and see how much travel on the clutch you have when depressed or (i take it it's hydraulic?) pump it a couple of times to see if that helps, also if it has linkages make sure they are all sitting well, with the car turned off is this an issue (that would soet the clutch from the linkages) but i'm geussing clutch, you need to sort this it will do the sychro's in the box otherwise, happened to me on a vw camper that i never got around to adjusting!

If changing gear needed that much force, I would be looking at the cables as the source of the problem. The clutch hydraulics are pretty straight forward as long as they're properly bled, they either work or they don't.  :-/

The only clutch problems that I had on my Seat Altea, (basically a good looking golf), were failure of the slave cylinder and dealer misdiagnosis/incompetence. ::)

On that note, was the clutch pivot bush removed? and if so was it refiited? Dealer neglected to put it back on mine, made the clutch a bit rough. It's a metal tube that the pivot bolt goes through, about 1.5 inches long, 10mm diameter iirc.

I'd start with new cables, then adjust it. :-/

Thanks for the reply's guys,   Just one question before i tackle this in the morning,   Do You reset the gear linkage cables while the engine is running or off?
