I have solved a problem which has cost me money over the last 3/4 years. I live in an area where they won't spend on speed cameras but put in road humps.
I found that the inner edges of my tyres caught the humps edges and ground the tyres down to the canvas. This has cost me 2 sets of tyres in 4 years over 15k miles! Rather than stay at home, my local Just Tyres branch suggested that legally I coud reduce my tyre profile and changed my tyres from 205/65/R15 to 195/65/R15 and this would give me 10mm each side extra clearance. Its worked because after one year I have no problems with my tyres!! hope this helps someone .AlanV

Hope you notified your insurance, and are also aware your speedo is no longer correct.
Inner edge wear on omegas is normally due to the camber being wrong.
get the geometry set up at a specialist (not just teh machine saying 'in the green), and all should be fine.

given your trackrod wear thread as well, a good geometry check could well be worthwhile.
-
Sounds to me like bad advice from your tyre place I am afraid
1) Excess shoulder wear is a camber issue, this will still occur although maybe slightly less now you have odd sized tyres.
2) Reducing tyre size means your vehicle is now non-standard so insurance must be notified (or in the case of an accident you may not be covered).
A full geo is the only answer!

Unless you do wheelspins over them, you would have to go over them an extraordinary amount to significantly wear the inside edges. There is the possibility that they could knock your wheel alignment out if taken too fast but that's not likely.
-
Wearing down to canvas suggests far more fundamental problem, that will still be there just less pronounced with narrower tyres.
Plenty of humps in the road near my parents, when I lived at home, got 45k out of my set of standard fit tyres

Sorry Alan, but that's a load of BS. The geometry is out, pure and simple. It needs a Full Geometry setup at Wheels in Motion or one of the affiliates :y
-
Which part is the BS?, because I could FEEL the damage happening, and I saw how all the tyres which had good even tread were shredded on the inside edges.
I sent two sets of bills with a complaint to our council but with three follow up letters over two years I have been ignored. Just Tyres Manager told ME that was the problem, and had given him extra business, and obviously it only affects cars with the same wheel spacing as Omega's. As for setup, I went to Motorcare in Bedford after the first set of tyres went west and paid for there super setup, but it didn't solve the problem.
Anyway if I line it up carefully I get over the humps without any problem now! My local garage where I get major repairs done said road humps give them plenty of work, 2 rear coil springs on mine last year and one actually broken in two!
Anyway after spending £580 in 3 years, I now have no problem! AlanV :) [smiley=smiley.gif]

The crap fed to you by the manager of that tyre place, saying narrow tyres will fix your problem.
"super setup" ::) - Bet that was just alignment, not full geometry ;)
Shredded to inside edge is not humps, you geometry alignment is out. Narrower tyres will just not show the problem as bad, as mentioned above, your speedometer will be inaccurate as its a change in tyre size.
-
I believe he has only changed the width of his tyre so why would this affect his speedo? :-/

Just looked at their website. The Alignment you paid for looks like it's just 4 wheel laser alignment. This does not take into account the camber, which must be correct on the Omega other wise it will munch through the inner edge of the tyres ;)
Speed humps can (and do) affect the geometry of the car, including the camber, and when this is out it will increase tyre wear rates but if taken at a sensible speed the damage can be minimised.
As long as you're happy with what you've got/been told, that's fine... But this forum has people who really know what's going on and we've tried to explain it to you :y
-
I believe the best way to go over speed humps is making sure you hit it straight with one wheel only. So the whole hump is spread across one of the full tyres, the other doesn't hit at all..... Just my opinion.
What people are trying to say mate is that the inner edge of the tyres wear away when either the wishbones are shafted... or when the cambers are in need of a Full Geometry set up.
The normal tracking with the mirrors etc that most garages have just isn't good enough I'm afraid. There is a place called WIM ( wheels in motion) down southish or Nigel Lang's in Bolton that have both had good reports on here by members that have visited them.
Daz :y

I believe he has only changed the width of his tyre so why would this affect his speedo? :-/
Because the second set of numbers, 65 in this case, is the Aspect Ratio, i.e a percentage of the width of the tyre for the profile ;)
Admittedly, the speedo won't be out by much and is probably still within the manufaturer's tolerances... But it will read inaccurately compared with the previous reading with the correct size tyres :y

TBH, I don't think there's any way to go over them without risking some slight movement in the geometry. I prefer to straddle the speed pads if I can and take speed humps as slowly as sensible, especially when they're very fierce :-/

I have always been under the illusion that the speedo would be effected if someone was to put lower profile tyres on or smaller wheels ::)
I don't think by having more narrow tyres on will effect the speedo :o

As above, the profile of the tyres is the 2nd set of numbers, which is actually a ratio of the width.
Like I say, the difference is probably very small, but there will be a difference ;)

" changed my tyres from 205/65/R15 to 195/65/R15 and this would give me 10mm each side extra clearance."
The size of tyre that the guy posted in his original post says the width of the tyre has changed.....from 205 - 195...
The 65 which is the tyre wall has stayed the same
The R15 which is the size of wheel has stayed the same.
Am I wrong then? ::)

Yep ;D
This link (http://www.driverstechnology.co.uk/Tyre-size-coding.htm) explains it with pictures ;D ;D
Like I said, the sidewall is measured as a 5age of the width. So change the width with the same aspect ratio and the actual sidewall size changes. In this case by 6.5mm :y

Well if your right I am gonna Eat Obi ;D ;D ;D ;D
I have looked at your link... and erm I aren't that hungry ;D
I still don't think that the wall if what you say is 65% of the width of the tyre looks anything like it.. so there :P

As others have said, far more likely that the camber is out, than an occasional speed bump.
I suspect the Just Tyres manager was talking out of his backside. But if it works for you :y

Yes, and Lazytinker is right ;)
http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
Oh and the ever useful http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html which says you'd see a 2% difference in the speedo reading (indicated 60mph would be a previously indicated 58.8mph - hardly worth worrying about, really, given that difference will shrink once you take into account 'real world' tyre squish)
As for going over humps.. when they put the humps in outside my old house I had to drive down the middle of the road to avoid them entirely in the MR2 (it wasn't lowered that much, either!)

Utter 'dangle berries' I'm afraid.
What's happened here is, you've gone to a company offering a service. Fair enough.
Trouble is, as said, that service does not include camber setting.... Or even measuring. Camber is vital on the omega. Tracking/toe is all that's been addressed which is a fraction of the story with this car. Camber should be set to minus 1degree 10 mins for stock set up.
So rather than admit that fact, they have come up with some BS to deflect that they don't have a clue with this vehicle. Or of they do they should have informed you.
So as said, utter 'dangle berries'.
Sorry.
See wheels in motion web site.

In fact, thinking about it, eventually. The cheeky tinkers have had the Gaul to sell you a more expensive set of tyres as well. Being wider.

Narrower ;) ;) 195 instead of 205 ;)

I should have known really. But it's done and I'm on the register.
