Title: ANy turbo guru's??

Mate's 1.8 focus TD seems not to have any go in it.
He said it's performimg just like his non turbo 1.8d van.
He picked me up from the airport today and right enough, it seems like there is no turbo at all.
No smoke from the rear and given enough time and downhill bits it gets up to speed and revs freely enough with no load.
He has been quoted 700 + euros for a replacement but I said it may be something simple and a home fix might be the order of the day, the problem is I know only the basics of how a turbo works..... could someone with knowledge point me towards any possible remedies or is it too much for a DIY mechanic???

First port of call has to be to check all the associated pipework... May be as simple as a split intercooler pipe ;) ;) :D :D

Agreed. I replaced a turbo on one of those as it had broken up inside. The smoke screen fromthe exhaust had to be seen to be believed, and it chucked the oil at the back at a rate of approx. 3 litres in less than 3 miles. :o
Unlikely to be the turbo itself imo. :o :-/

Could be the turbo actuator not working, makes them feel like a poorly standard diesel and it's worth cleaning out the EGR as they hold amazing amounts of carbon.

Yep... But start with the very basics and check the hoses first ;)

Also if you can get to it remove the boost hose nearest the turbo and feel inside with your fingers for any side play in the spindle and wether it will spin freely with your fingers( engine off and cold of course :y)

first off, start with the basics yes, but!! check air filter isnt blocked solid, and then change fuel filter for a new one!!! these dont have a fuel pump as such its sucked through via the injection pump, so unless you know the fuel filter is newish, that where i would start!!
they are a barsteward to bleed!! then check leak off pipes for leaks or wetness, if the pump is not supplying enough fuel then the turbo cant spin up as its driven by exhaust gases, any warning lights on? has it been filled with petrol by mistake? need more info really before we can see if its a quick fix or not  :y

Cheers for all the replies chaps, not being a fraud man meself, I will take all this info to the man and we will see how it goes. Mind you at the moment it will be first thing in the morning or after sundown, it's too bloody hot here to be stuffed under bonnets!
Air filter is new last week, I have mentioned the fuel filter, but discounted that as the engine revs nicely when not under load and even under load runs sweetly all the way up to (nearly) the red line. As I said it is just like a normally aspirated diesel, takes an age to get up to speed but maintains it on the flat and only drops down on the hills (of which there are many round here!) I will check though.
The turbo actuator....is that solenoid driven and fuse protected?
Not been filled with petrol... as far as I know.
Again like I said, no plumes of smoke so not likely to be the turbo seals...um could the wastegate be stuck open, would that have the same effect??????

Once I get me head together from the loooooooong flight back I will venture over to me mates place with tools and see what's what.
Reporting back as and when I have anything to report.

Well, all is well, opened the bonnet and spotted small (I presume vacuum pipe) adrift, popped it back in, took car for quick spin and turbo is working OK.
I don't have a picture editor to circle the offending item but

Just to the left of the brake reservoir is the something or other and the small pipe under the larger one was just hanging! There was also a lot of sooty crap all over the back of the bay, I would imagine it came from that....

Thats the other side iirc.  Trying to remember how the wastegate actuator works on those tractor lumps...  :-/
