last week , as the daily run car has many stone chips, door dings, dents and some unmatching colors decided to repair all those..so started the trouble..

painters were busy and I took the chance of paying less :) so I did the block sanding and clearing the old paint myself..unfortunately there were some small surprises ;D

also hood completely cleaned with solver and sanded for epoxy..
the reason we didint use solver on all surfaces was to keep the original primer on paint and remove all old repairs and paints.. but really tedious and long job..
after the sandng is complete repaired areas will be covered with some tiny sheet of bondo , later drying for some days then epoxy cover and again drying period :-/

tbh cem i dont think anyone in britain would go to all the effort to get rid of a few dings on a clit but hats off to you on doing it right :y

;D ;D nor here ;D
problem is I'm a paint maniac and I hate dings or unmatching colors on any car I use ;D
and I dont have that sort of money to buy brand new... and I doubt I will even if I had.. :-/

You are taking a lot of care in prep, it should look good when done. :y
How much is it costing ?. It would be interesting to compare to UK prices. Perhaps I should come over for a holiday and get the car painted while I'm there !. Mind you that would be a very long way to go for a respray .

approx 600 £.. nearly half of the cost is the expensive ppg epoxy and Standocryl 2K platinum lack (high scratch resistance).. cost is a bit low as I did most of the job .. instead I spend more for primer and lack..( I estimate their prices to be 1/3 in UK so you need to bring them here)
normally a complete metallic paint (whole car) costs 900 £ here including dismantling the parts and good quality stuff.. (but not with the most expensive primers and lack)
most painters here try to avoid block sanding until primer as it takes very long time..instead they use machine sanders or use solver..which I didnt accept.. the workers doing my job are friends so they dont want much..
next year I'm planning to paint omega .. but still I dont know how I will sand whole car as its so big.. :-/
ps: if you want to paint here , I can help
pps: you will need a month here at the minimum for a quality job.. or leave the car here for me and come back again if you dont have time..
-
Hmm that's a very good price. :y
Anyone fancy an Ankara respray meet ?. ;D ;D ;D

Big block and large sheets of wet 'n dry ? ;)
problem is the first time omega was painted, the painter did it in old fashion.. there is more than 9 layers of lack (I'm scared to say the paint layers) ;D according to my calculations I need more than 45 days only for sanding :-/
the reason I want to paint is similiar to clit, some dings here and there and stone chips..
ps: although I can take most scratches some go deep in paint :(
-
although not visible in pictures the paint become old in 6 years :-/ (pictures are from 5 mp mobile camera)

after masking ,cleaning the surfacs for primer
we waited for 3 days as the weather was rainy (high humidity)
and applying epoxy primer
(http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x80/mecdv6/omega/ph2no6.jpg)

we need to wait at least 24 hours but probably actual time will be longer.. then sanding the surface (primer surface 4 layers of coating ) is necessary >:(
this car probably will stay another 10 days >:( >:(

Crikey.. no breathing apparatus, not even a mask? :o
epoxy is nearly the most poisinous substance in paint chemicals (what he was painting) .. I told/warned them a million times.. they said they cant paint freely with it.. :(
in the past I worked in the painting area/oven (dont know the name) like them.. and had real problem for few days.. (head turning, vomitting) .. but doesnt seem to effect them :o

Yeah - madness.. though I imagine the epoxy is a pussycat compared to the isocyanates in the 2K paint; that stuff will 'soak in' to you through every available bit of skin and really make you ill, and one dose of exposure gives raised sensitivity for future exposure/respiratory problems/death.. (Assuming the epoxy primer - I'm not familiar with it - doesn't also contain isocyanates.. if it does then they are quite, quite mad and probably heading for an early grave!)
Car looks good, though!

thanks.. but I have lost my fingerprints, so police cant catch me anymore ;D and must admit it also tested my patience to the limit :-/

now the story goes on..
wet sanding epoxy with 320.. also fenders all paint removed (wet sanding with 220 then 400-plastic surface)

and the observed surface errors are covered again..
waited few days for them to dry completely as it was too rainy >:( >:( >:(

and last stage epoxy
(http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x80/mecdv6/omega/CLGON26.jpg)
now need to wait a few days and continue with wet 800.. I will see if I can.. :-/

I'll post all stages Den..Thanks for your interest :y :y
-
for those interested , bondo was glasurit 839-20..
although its a quick drying type , we experienced its necessary to wait at least 48 hrs .. and must say it may change depending on the climate..
and must be sanded dry if you dont want to wait extra period..
paint applied on wet bondo causes disaster after some time.. :(
ps: probably most of you know, bondo must be used in minimal amounts and as thin as possible..
-
after epoxy coats and surface corrections are made,
here are the other stages we have passed..
bumper also cleaned from all paint
(http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x80/mecdv6/omega/clitboya/bumper1.jpg)
then for same color base epoxy applied
(http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x80/mecdv6/omega/clitboya/bumper2.jpg)
and sanded with 400-800 wet
(http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x80/mecdv6/omega/clitboya/bumper800.jpg)
and mirror covers
(http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x80/mecdv6/omega/clitboya/mirrorcovers.jpg)
-
surface sanded with 400-800-1200 wet after epoxy dried (3-4 days)
-
now colored base coat applied (5 layers, will be sanded with 1200 again).. color tone is lighter than the original color code but thats necessary for the final color not to be darker.. (we added some white color.. 400 grs to 2 kg original 632 code..)
-
Yes, it's easy to see the worth in thorough preparation cem - looking good. 8-) :y
-
after all we prepared another seperate door (from a friends body repair shop) for color matching trials.. surface cleaned completely with solver.. sanded with 80 ..2 layers of epoxy applied.. now is in drying period.. after color coat will be applied .. and we will test the final color mixture with laquer..
I searched for that device
(http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x80/mecdv6/omega/clitboya/cm512m3_pict002.jpg)
(info here
http://www.konicaminolta.com/instruments/products/color-measurement/spectrophotometer/cm512m3/index.html
)
but its too expensive :( and is available only in 2 services (toyota service) here.. so borrowing is not logical as we will need it many times.. so back to traditional trial error method >:(
when you buy this also you need a software to arrange mixture proportions.. and also a glossmeter etc etc.. :-/

Apart from the knocks & scrapes cars pick up in general use, salt from the roads during the winter is the biggest problem we have in this country. Cars will rust, but rust even better in salty water. :'( :'(

best method is to use epoxy under the car (its used in ships for water isolation) ( at least 4 layers or more.. and you will need a lift.. downside is epoxy is expensive , dries late and its poisonous..
but after you can work even with hammer and epoxy will stay :)
-
after countless/numerous color trials on test panels/cards as seen below (including original laquer which will be used)
which cost more than a week and some money, we ended up with a 99.9.. matching color ;D
as the original color mix by standox was a disaster >:( (too dark) started with 100 gr test portions (few trials), dropped the black (17 gr) and blue color (1.9 gr) to half amounts .. then prepared 2 kg solution and mixed extra 25 gr white, 3 gr red (which was not in formula) and 8 gr yellow and additional 0.5 gr blue..
these are incremented slowly by paintshop.. tested on cards then panel..all tests are done on sunny times from different angles.. so no sun no test :(
-
and after reaching the final color , the last day before painting we sanded the car starting with 1200 after 1500 grid..

and DDAY.. after 40 days of preparation.. 18 june..
>:(
but..
I was prepared.. as I follow meteorology..
2 hours before the rain started the car was ready in front of the paint shop in nylons ;D
and forcing the paint shop to arrange the hours as we were the last car..god knows today what problems I had..painter busy with other customers, shop busy etc etc..
-
finally 5 pm job started and the rain after

Cem,
thats a cracking job!!!
what wouldnt i give to have a spraybooth like that up here,
I have to do all the painting outside between 6pm and 10pm as thats when the sun is not so hot and the wind is not a factor >:(
than when it hardened i can polish out any imperfections!! :'(
usually takes a complete 10 hours to polish it up :-/
but a question the clear laquer you used see its made in germany, is it used straight out of the tin with a hardener added? might try it next time

yep.. you use it with hardener straightly(2 laquer 1 hardener) (without thinner) .. but has a problem..it can flow easily and dries very late and smells bad .. :-/ :(
even 2 days after painting it was soft so we applied the first level sanding easily..but after 10 days 2k grid sandpaper was definitely useless ;D
when we were painting after 2-3 tiny layers (actually equivalent to one thick layer ) it was about to flow down so we stopped and give some heat and wait nearly 25-30 minutes (check the drying state from newspaper covers) and then continue with another tiny 3-4 layers)
so I recommend you test it on a vertical surface first with several layers to see its flow point :y

yep!! had a couple where the laquer wouldnt go off hard for about a week!! always looking for a better product!! and i always do one low panel with 2 or 3 light coats, and another with a heavy one if i think it wont sag, then give them a while to see which looks best, then do the rest of the car!!
Thanks Cem :y

Well done Cem. Excellent pictures... :y
-
Car looks great Cem, shame about the Miggy, but nothing is unfixable :y :y
will be better.. few more hps.. healthy engine.. and I'll convert it to manual.. :)
anyway I go in extra expense..
Stick a set of 3.0 litre cams in it Cem, that will wake it up :y

cambelt set
(http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x80/mecdv6/rebuilt3.jpg)
I prefer instead of gm kit.. have the necessary markings .. and following the guides from here (I have the cambelt dvd files)
it was a perfect fit at the first trial..tensions correct, positions correct.. :)
-
I found the 3.0 inlet cams from the breakers (only one pair) .. and guess what, they were fractured.. >:( >:( >:(
an idiot hammered them >:(
so I give up :'(
anyway engine is ok now.. much better than before as heads are polished.. tomorrow will start the manual conversion..
-
bad luck Cem
never mind it runs good now, it will seem faster with the manual box anyway!!! :y

the car, now, completely transformed to another personality.. :-? I think I'll keep it longer.. brand new similiar acceleration cars cost a fortune here..which I cant buy anyway..
still some electronic needs to be done.. programming the mid.. solving the ignition retard (still I didnt understand though, my friend says he can solve by programming the ecu) :-/
anyway I'm a happy bunny now :) :y

Very impressive work Cem, I sometimes wonder if I would prefer a manual change, but my drive into work in the mornings is stop/go where automatic is perfectly suited. I think I'm getting lazy ;D ;D
