Title: LPG And europe
Post by: Gaffers on 15 September 2011, 19:52:20
As I should get my lpg sorted before my weekend away in Paris at the end of the month, my mind has been on lpg adaptors.  I know I can get these on eBay but I am concerned about quality, plus the fact that I won't know if they won't work until it's too late.

This is assuming that I can get the inspection and insurance done before I go.....

Advice from the floor?

I had no problems with the one I used, came from ebay.

PS. you can't go through the chunnel with a gas car, just in case

I bought them from the first services once there (both of them) and it was cheaper than ebay.  :y Although that was quite a few years ago and I haven't been checking the prices since ;)

Make sure you have a pair of pliers handy in the car as they can freeze too tight to get undone by hand :y I found that out the hard way ::)

LPG in France is more expensive than here unless you go away from the motorway into the towns (ideally to a supermarket) ;)

I have never taken the Eurotunnel and I dont intend to start now.  I prefer the enforced break from the vehicle during my trip.  Admittedly it's more beneficial when travelling from my home in the NW but even after 2 hours in the car from here to Dover a little coffee and a biscuit watching the ferry pitch and roll makes a difference to the concentration levels  :y

Agreed. The tunnel has it's purpose but for me the ferry is a nice rest during the trip :y

Thats some good advice :y

I take it I will have to get it inspected before I drive it to Paris?  Anyone know of a good one around Hampshire/Surrey?

Having used it once. Never again.

"Technical problems" on the way out. Met with a shrug of the shoulders. Hard luck.

Flew to Belgium at my own expense.

Tunnel working fine on the way back, but because I didn't travel out on the tunnel, my return ticket was somehow invalid. Shrug of the shoulders. Hard luck.

Damn thing needs filling with a few tonnes of expanding foam IMHO. >:(

Depends what your insurer ask for. ;) No legal reason to have it inspected whatsoever, but you need to if your insurance company stipulate it, obviously.

There's a place in Alresford who were happy to inspect mine. Place that did Entwood's conversion. I am aware that the main man has emigrated now, but worth a try. :y

When I spoke to them about it some time ago they said that it should be installed by a professional, so by that they mean to COP11 thus I think I answered my own question.  They are a broker anyhow so I am sure they could find someone who would insure me :y

I appears that it's about €0.89/L on the autoroutes and €0.79/L in towns right now.  Not that bad then :y

Should add... Most continental filling stations have adapters available to borrow (if they haven't been nicked) ;)

Wouldn't have thought so... I have a pair (although there's now another different type in use in Spain IIRC) and they live in the car :y I expect Entwood has too ;)

For the sake of a few quid just get your own if you're going to go abroad :y

Adaptors readily available to borrow/buy at "proper" garages, most supermarkets/hypermarkets do NOT sell or hold them. I bought my own and it stays in the car.

Couple of points on using the adaptor .... do not overtighten .. just needs to be fingertight .. not even fist-tight .. that way it will not freeze on. When you insert the nozzle ensure the whole thing is vertical or the weight of the unit can slightly unscrew the adaptor leading to a cloud of gas and general panic from the locals.

Nozzels vary a lot more than the UK ones do ... release lever position can be a trigger on the side or a button on the top... sometimes worth a quick "play" before inserting into the adaptor, as if its in and you can't release it ..........   :)

My records from the last trip (August) show the price varied from the equivalent of 81 p/litre on motorway services to the equivalent of 71 p/litre at a LeClerc Hypermarket. Prices do change MUCH faster in France .. the same outlet might have 3 prices in one day !!!

LPG is very readily available and if you use a satnav ...

http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6055 (log in required)

or this site will give you local info on both petrol and GPL ( as LPG is called over there :)  )

http://www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr/index.php

If you want to borrow my adapter you are welcome .. just have to work out how to get it to you .. but as you own an LPG car I'd advise  getting your own .. TBH .. :)

HTH :)

No, the reason I mentioned Euro Tunnel is they wont except LPG cars, a friend of mine got tugged with His LPG Audi S4 on the way to Paris and He had no come  back as He booked Online and accepted the Terms, ended up paying more dosh for a Ferry and a big delay.

Zirk - Sorry buddy but I consider that obvious.  My comments were just aimed at Napoleon's Invaision tunnel in general.

Kev - booked in for inspection on the 23rd.  £90 + Vat plus £15 for registration on the database.

Don't forget you'll need to make up a heat shield for the EGR/Manifold and to check the pipework is all correctly secured :y
