Remember I said I was going to respray my car a few weeks ago ?. Well ...
I watched a couple of respray DVD's and then set to work. They make it look so easy, howeer they have large compressors and well lit booths, I was spraying outside with compressors that didn't have quite enough air feed. Things got worse when part way through the base coat, the small machine mart compressor I was using for the mask air tripped out, and I had to quickly arrange to feed both the mask and spray gun from my Hydrovane 4cfm compressor. This didn't work too well !. However I finished it on a Friday afternoon at about 4:30, clear coat was nice and shiny, great.

I woke up the next day to find that the side nearest the house was still shiny, but the rest was now matt. It must have been the wind blowing past the garage that chilled the paint. So I had to rub down most of it and respray the clear coat earlier in the day. I got it prepared and resprayed on Sunday, finishing around 2:30. I spent the next couple of hours moving the car about to get the most of the sun to dry it, and fortunately it was OK, the next day the shine was still there.

So at long last I have a nice shiny car. The paint is not brilliant, but it looks considerably better than before.
Anyone else wanting to try this make sure you have a BIG compressor. An air mask takes about 4CFM a small spray gun takes up to 6CFM, and good guns take a lot more. Plus you will need a good 5 or 6 hrs with the temp above 16deg to cure the clear coat.

Nothing is ever as straight forward as you plan! But congratulations on an excellent job Ken 8-):y

Good job.. :y
Wait some time until the paint is completely dry..
(Depends on your weather conditions)
you can check with finger nail in a lower point corner which is not visible..when you push with with finger nail if it doesnt let trace its dry..
Then you can use wet 2000 grid sanding and polisher to make the surface much smoother..Also will take most of the dust from the surface.. :y

Excelllent job :y Last time I sprayed outside I spent the following weekend t-cutting several cars parked downwind !!!!!

Flys getting stuck weren't the problem, my Hydrovane was struggling to feed both the mask and gun at the same time, and at certain points the gun stopped atomising the spray. Result runs in the clear coat. And also with the sun from cerrtain angles, you couldn't see if you were overlapping the previous run properly, so there are several dry patches.
But it was great fun, and for all my mistakes its a hundred times better than it was. :y :y :y
Thats how I learn about doing things. I can't spray well, but I know the basics, and next time it will be better. Now to find somebody elses car to practise on ;D ;D ;D

I can't knock you for trying & that's how we succeed.
Good for you Ken :y :y :y

What paint did you use, and why did you need an air mask if spraying outside surly just a good filtered mask would do??
Looks like a good result... :y
-
I used 2 pack paint, which uses Isocynates to start the curing process, so its not nice to inhale. I discovered that you can buy a specific filter mask for 2 pack spraying for about £20, but I have asthma and don't want to make it worse. Interestingly enough I think the base coat is a normal solvent evaporation paint, its the clear coat (and poss the primer ?) which is particularly nasty.
The paint I got from a local shop; I went for the house brand which was a bad idea !. I bought the original paint a year ago, and had to buy some more base coat. Despite being the same name, the paints are different colours, so GM Ural Mountain Metalic is not the same from different manufacturers. With hinesight I would have chosen a more expensive paint from a well known manufacturer; you would have been able to get data sheets giving application times and the paint would have better, more repeatable characteristics.

Isocynates in 2 pack paints can cause cancer and is very piosoness so air feed mask is needed for this, still looks good though for first go very nice welll done m8y :y :y :y :y :ythe stuff usually from cans is ether cellulose or acrylic paint :y :y

Fantastic job mate given that it was your first time and in the worst possible conditions :y
