While surfing the web I came across a very interesting device. Its commonly used on emergency vehicles such as fire trucks or ambulances.
It preflashes the LED brake lights 2-3 times very rappidly within less then 1 second before allowing them to become completly lit.
Then I located one of these modules on eBay and decided to give it a try.
The installation took 15min.
Instructions can be found below:
Includes pictures and detailed wiring.

:y :y Looks good, certainly effective at night

im all for my gadgets... but to me that just looks like u hav a dodgey 3rd brake light (loose connection sorta thing) :D :D :D
maybe if it flash a bit slower and at the same intervals (i noticed the last flash pauses a bit longer) then... well maybe ;D ;D

Absolutely, the problem was that the flash is so rapid that the camera often skips a bean and only shows say 2 of the 3 flashes.
Its almost like one of those multi flashes on your photocamera...
Its not distracting in any way but its eye catching because of the sheer size and output of that light bar.
I have only seen this one other time on a Mercedes S-class that was panic braking in front of me...
Basically on that car everything on the rear end lit up including the hazard lights...

Im having trouble capturing the exact action of it..
Its a rapid 1, 2, 3, ON!
Its always the same but my camera decided to show it differently...
I can speed up the flashes too since the LEDs can be instant on/off it works great... it would suck on regular bulbs though!

Its there to help grab driver's attention.
if someone is following you closely and you tap the brakes the raid flash in their eyes will cause them to become more alert of the fact that you are braking, and I think it reduces the chances of getting rear ended.
that and it looks cool too!

Knowing our nanny state in the uk im sure they would decide that was illegal ..... :y

I had something similar on a trailer ( Truck class 1 ) that I used to pull, all it was was a indicater relay wired up to the brake lights, it was good and never had any probs. but it probably made everyone that was behind me go mad when I had my foot on the brake pedal.

As said already... probably illegal in the UK.
