Been a slow day at work and i got to wondering why we all picked Omegas as our cars. I picked mine after driving an undercover plod MV6, i know i ended up with an elite which i think is the dog's bo**OCKs and as much as i like the MV6 for its driveability, i do love the elite for it's comfort, just wonderd why you all picked yours?

Cos it was allegedly a replacement for the Senator/Carlton range. You'll find a lot of past & present Senator/Carlton owners here.

Well I picked my last 4 Omega's because they are comfortable, nice to drive, big (which is what I need) and I also like the shape and style of them to. Its a shame VX stopped producing them as they are such lovely cars. I am now on my fith Omega :y :y
-
was at the car auction as i frequently did at the time ( getting back into that weekly very very soon)
Looked at loads of stock fleet cars to resell....the MV6 came up and decided to take a chance on it at the stupid price i got it for. £3000 for a 2000 plated fsh car nearly 3 years ago
Won it - not knowing what an mv6 was - brought it home - and changed my mind about selling it :y
-
Seven grand for a 3 year old luxury saloon with 30,000 miles on the clock. 12 months NetworkQ warranty and a reputation for high mileage reliability.
What else could I have got for that value. Only trouble is I didn't know about the other variants e.g. Elite, MV6 etc at the time but I am thrilled to bits with the car and after finding OOF I wouldn't want anything else.
Next question :y

Allways fancied one after having the big old Scorpios, Rovers, Audi etc, liked the shape, also didnt know much about the trim levels, Very comfortable cars on my second Omega now but want an Elite next..
I still like the old Scorpio, never had a Saab but will in the future and maybe a Volvo T5 sort of thing but for the moment the Omega is a very nice car indeed..And a great bunch on the forum.. :y :y

Had a saab, built like a brick outhouse and if i ever changed from the meega i would have another, as for the T5, well i drove several of them for the old bill, and as nice as they were and as rapid as they were they just ain't no fun being a FWD car, and yes before everyone points out the obvious, i know saabs are FWD but they are much more of a motor than a volvo will ever be. Anyway i love my meega and i aint changing it ;D

Have driven many T5's, along with T5R's and a manual T5R with twin turbo's fitted ::) yes they are quick, especially the twin turbo one, but for all round driveability, space, comfort and load capacity they don't come anywhere near a meega and they are no more reliable either ;)

I have to agree 100%, they are good and they are very quick, but at the end of the day they are a volvo and i dont want to be seen dead in one ;D

Confession time for Dave C...
Right, I was born in 1965, so by the age of 9 -10 I was brainwashed by the Sweeny on TV.. Consuls & Granny MKI's, WOW! Wanted one! As I aged the Sweeny changed to MKII's, yeah wanted one even more... Passed my test at 17, had a spell with VW's, the 1600 Variant was a nice middle of the range car for a young lad... joined the local IAM in Stoke, learned to drive with an ex-grade 1 police instructor.. taught me to drive quickly.. What were the police using at the time?? MKII Grannys, fancied a MKI, went and got one, converted it from Auto to Manual gearbox. Progressed to a MKII 2.8 kept it for 9 years, the natural progression went to a MKIII 2.9, then, 24v Cossie Granada.... What a bast fastard!!!! Decided to change for a newer car, I only like rear wheel drive as my preference, it's a control thing, Ford didn't have any decent progression from there, so! What are the police indulging their trust in as a guide? Yes you got it! Omega's....
So there... Ask a question like that, you get me started on one!!!! ;D
Moral of the story... The police don't usually have sh1te to drive around in, they give a good indication of whats worth having..

I had an omega hire car for a long weekend on a trip to scotland about years ago, realy liked the car, so checked them out in various mags and Parkers recommended second hand CDX model, so I went and found one and bought it 83k on clock FSH, paid £7,200 that was back in 2001 for pre-facelift auto, that then got written off Nov 2003 (some idiot pulled out in front of me), then went and bought the replacement car, which is the one I have now again CDX but manual this time 83k on clock £6,200.00. :y
-
I migrated to an Omega after having various Carlton’s a Viceroy and Senators.
Frankly the Omega does not float my boat like the Senator did and I still have a great admiration for the Senator A. I suppose in the end its big and great value for money second hand due to its horrendous depreciation if a little too complicated for my liking. It’s a great pity Vauxhall have now effectively abandoned this segment of the market but GM in the US is presently in big trouble and facing an almost 1970’s British Leyland sized meltdown. If the present US fad for SUV’s and trucks bursts due to pressure from environmentalist they really will have nowhere else to go. Inevitably this crisis affects their worldwide subsidiaries. The Vauxhall Signum seems a perfect illustration of GM’s present malaise, whatever market it was intended for it has missed completely. What were they thinking ?
-
For me it was a case of having had "a few" Senators before, I decided to try an Omega out...
Move ahead a few years and we have this place! ;D
In regards to the Saab v Volvo argument.
Both very good cars. My personal preference is the Saab (had a few of them too) but I know people who swear by the Volvos (and there is no question they are damn good cars).
However, an equivlant plated Saab, and especially a Volvo, will cost considerably more than an Omega!
-
purely value for money! saw a 51 plate CD for sale 2 years ago for £2150 and seriously spent too much time looking at it, decided i liked the look of it and was suspicious of the price until i checked online only to find out they really are bargains. I wanted a facelift because i like the modern looks.. not a fan of black plastics, and due to having an accident in my previous car, i was limited to the GLS for insurance
will be shopping for an elite at some point..

My mum had a C70 T5 although it was a fast mover its a guzzler and the turning circle is about as big as the M25

i got turned from the darkside(ford) after getting my mondeo ghia x smashed up by an asian woman with no licence an driving her sons company car!!!..so i bought a 2.0 veccy upon recommendation from my best mate an this year decided i wanted something that was big an comfortable as i`m a big bloke an me mate makes me look skinny an liked the look of the miggy so i thought why not an i aint regretted it yet even with the teething troubles everyone gets with new or used motors..all i want now is to get the bodywork upto scratch an sort the dreaded rust round the doors out... :y :y

purely on styling and looks, but i have been eased further by all the gadgets of my cdx !!

Hi i needed a car and my bro inlaw lent us his omega his second car,
my wife liked so much she told him he wasn`t getting it back so we bought it off
him, even with the problems i`ve had with it i would`nt change it.
-
Reason I bought Omega?
Well, I had (which she now drives) a nice little Rover 25. She, at the time had cars from a work lease scheme. Early 2004, that scheme came to an end (the lease was a Focus, couldn't wait to get rid of that heap of junk). The plan was, I would get a banger for the winter, and use the Kawasaki in the summer. However, that summer, we were driving to south of France, so we wanted a big car.
Looked at cheap cars that would be good for the France trip, and less than 5yrs old. Boiled down to Omega or Rover 800. No contest really, test drove a number of both, 800s are awful, Omegas in a different class.
The intention was to sell it after France, but 3.5yrs later (and a couple of french trips), we still have the MV6.

Ouch, that hurt.... ....you can really go off some people you know >:(

How I become omega owner ?
Originally I was looking for 2 liter laguna's..Here in my country the taxes and the gas prices are horrific..
I looked in car bazaars for 3 months..Couldnt find one in good condition for normal price..
Finally one sunday nearly I was leaving the bazaar and find my omega..Was in good condition. And acceptable
price (And for luxury ,comfort, performance much better lagunas)..Mechanic friends resisted.Tell will spend too
much gas, expensive parts etc. As I'm a capricorn I go in my direction and got it.Now happy with that..(Now the friends are wating for me to sell :y )
For future..I want an original turbo car..if budget will permit..
-
you get a lot of car for your money
spacious
brilliant drive
classy shape
the list goes on and on and on and on and on
-
I had had a couple of cavaliers, but my family were growing up, and 3 young adults wouldn't fit in the back of a Cav, well not quietly ;D. I liked Vauxhall engineering, I could fix most things myself, so garage bills were going to be low. I then read a Car Mag report on the Omega which remarked on its comfortable ride and space, and that made up my mind. Interesting how way back 6 or 7 years ago, the Omega was noticable bigger than a lot of other cars, but they all seem to be getting bigger now.

I've always had Vauxhalls until I switched to a Pug 306 1.9D (No T >:() and then decided to buy a caravan.
Hated the Pug so went to Vx to get a Frontera. General Manager told me they were sh1te and would be better of with an Omega. He'd just bought one for his forthcoming twins due to the huge boot - but as all good car dealers would, he took it off his wife and sold it to me for a few extra quid. That was a 2.0 GLS. 2 year old, 50k £9000.
2 years later he phoned me up with a story that he needed to sell 1 car today to meet the sales targets and as such if I gave him a deposit I could have any new Vx at nearly cost :o
Mv6 mmmm, Elite mmmm - only wanted heated seats......CD would do..... £13400 SOLD! And I still have it 4 years and 50k later :y

:)Same, born 1963 grew up on Sweeney, Dad had company mk2 & 3 Cortinas(mk3 favourite car way before Liife on mars) tried to make 2000E look like a GXL. Always preferred RWD and big comfy motors.
Later on drove late Granadas as taxis, the company changed to Omegas @ Mreg, then bought N&Preg mini facelifts which was better 'cos i do'nt like the Astra/Cav sreering wheel(sorry early model owners).
Moved up north did HGV then noticed how cheap they'd got, remembered how much i liked 'em & after about 5yrs with other motors bought this one cos it was v6, cd, manual & 95k.
I did phone a 2.0 auto cos it had 57k & full history but it had gone.
To sum up i love mine nearly a year on but much as i like the toys on cdx's elites i think a manual late as i can find V/W reg pre facelift is my personal choice, but would have to be low mls/ history so not easy to find or cheap. Also regarding previous "finance post" will have to wait a couple of years.
Btw if i opted for luxury cdx/elite, reckon i'd be ok with an auto, suits big cars. [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Always been a Vauxhall man, had an old Astra Belmont, then 2 Corsa's. Always fancied an Omega, and when the chance of getting one for a damn good price came up, I got it :)
2.5i GLS Auto, 98-R, 103k miles, Bargain at £350 :y
Drove it for about 9 months tho, but as I lost my job and couldn't afford to run it, I had to sell up, so made twice what I paid for it reselling it, and managed to fix up my old Corsa GSi which had been stood for about 2 years prior...
To be honest though, I really want another, so now looking for an Elite, either 2.5 or 3ltr. Corsa being what it is (stripped & gutted), its just not up to the long cruising on the motorways like the Omega was!
-
Apart from starting off with SD1 V8's (Insurance wasn't too expensive in my teenage years!) I always had Vauxhalls as company cars. Cavaliers, Carltons and Vectra's.
I wanted something rear wheel drive with a V6 up front and i've grown to appreciate Vauxhalls over any other make, i'm happy to do basic maintenance on them and on finding this site I knew there'd be plenty of help. The residuals are so poor that it becomes a lot of car for the money and what are your other choices? If you look at BMW's and the like they cannot match the equipment levels for the money, everything is an option.... then there's the image, nobody keys an Omega....
Driving the Omega reminds me of the SD1, same basic concept I suppose.... just leagues ahead in development.

First car 1300 fiesta ghia (with Capri 2.8i alloys, didn't fit too well) then Astra SR (Puke Green-nice) then company cars - Corsa, Astra, Mondeo, Escort (saloon and Estate), Astra van, Megane, Laguna, Vectra.
As soon as option ti opt out of company car scheme came, I knew what I wanted, had to be big, comfortable and quick, and at half price for an 18 month old MV6 who could ask for more. :y
The trouble is now what do I replace her with??????? :'(

I had a Ford Granada Scorpio Mk 3 (2.9 V6) for 15 years .. absolutely brilliant towcar .. at 15 years old you can no longer get continental breakdown insurance so unfortunately it had to go as we holiday in France every year. Before that a standard 2.3 Granny for 6 years - good towcar but not as nice as the Scorpio - only replaced 'cos an idiot ran up the back and totalled it
As I hate 4X4's, love big comfortable powerful saloons, and want rear wheel drive for towing I have limited options, also due to the weight of the 'van I tow (1600Kgs) I will only tow with a vehicle of around 2000 kgs +/- a bit.. this left even fewer options ..boiled down to
BMW 5 series
Merc C Class
Omega
on the budget - at the time (6 years ago) this gave me a 6 year old Beemer, a 7 year old Merc or a 3 year old Omega.. and I found the Elite which had the same (or better in some cases) spec than the other 2...(especially the self levelling suspension) .... it became a no-brainer ... bought the miggy and have never regretted it.
Slightly slower away from the lights with the 'van on the back than the Granny was .... but from 30 upwards no comparison .. way more power, extremly stable and I get 30% better fuel consumption all round.
I am seriously considering replacing the current miggy with a newer one (2002-2003) simply while they are available with lowish miles not because of problems with this one, probably won't happen as once I like a car i tend to keep them 10-15 years, if I don't like them its 10-15 weeks !!
The miggy is a powerful, capable, comfortable armchair, with agro when you need it :)
-
I wanted a large estate, always fancied an Omega and way better than a mundaneo which was the other option. On my second one now and would like a 3.0 elite estate manual (I wish)
-
Kinda just 'fell into' Omegas. To be honest - I didn't even notice them before i bought one, must be the subtle understated looks!
A customer of mine was selling his 2.5 Auto CDX estate, quite a step up from the mundaneo TD I had. Bought it, loved it - comfy, big and I like VX styling etc. But after a series of failures...OK, I was spending more fixing it that it was worth I bought a 2.5 CD Manual saloon. Utterly reliable...but just 'boring' and a bit underpowered for my liking - so went and got a manual MV6. Alright - I've practically spent a grand on it this year (brakes, exhaust, wheels, tyres, servicing) but it'll do me for another year or so before I get bored & need yet more power under the bonnet.

I started years ago with a Manta i400, very sporty fast car and the most reliable that i had ever owned.
over the years, as we all do you tend to wander, try other makes other sizes until you mature enough to find the car that finally fits you, its like a chemical response.
With me, it was not just the fact that Vx/Opel are quite reliable compared to others it also gives you everyting you desire at a reasonable price(although no one has yet told me why they are so cheep)
swmbo must like it too of course, and i think the size and comfortable drive the car offers just makes you feel safe in the case of an emergency.
I must admit that i have fell in love with a few migges here on the forum and shows me that when i change cars it will be an MV6 facelift 2002/2003 with everything the manufacturers have to offer, or the modifier who sells it too me ;D ;D

I like many others on here had'nt taken much notice of omegas or any other vx before i got my tourer,
I work as a field service engineer repairing all automatic vending m/cs and we installed one at a vx dealer in kingston surrey.
Anyway, got frendly with a mech there and got talking about cars ect, ect, and told him i was looking for a new motor,he said he would keep his ears open if anything came up.
Thats how i got mine,it had suffered the dredded roller failure and he had bought it off the woman who owned it,I paid £4000 with only 32000 miles on the clock and full s/h.
It has never let me down and any money that i spent on the old girl is because i wanted to, rather than had too. I have had her 4 years now and dont plan to get any thing else unless a 3.2 fully loaded mv6 with irmcher pops up and grabs me gonads. ::) :y
-
I needed something heavy enough to tow my 1460kg caravan and be economical as well, the 2.5TD estate fitted the bill nicely. Also it has help shift no end of gear down to Oxford to my daughters flat no problem, that's saved having to hire a van as well. It's just returned an average 32mpg doing nearly 900 miles of which around 600 would have been towing the caravan. Not bad for a big old black beast.

for me it was a combination of a lot of things........
1) Brand - Many years ago i worked for Vauxhall, about the time that the Omega came out, i always struggled to understand why Vaux ditched the Carlton/Senator and then expected 1 car to replace it, i have never really been into foriegn cars and i have an aversion to anything with an oval badge on it. In the past i have had a lot of cavs, especially Mk2's i love them, they were my 'weapon of choice' in my boy racer days!!
2) price - i was looking for something that would cover a lot of miles, would be reliable, could do the 'european run' when required with the kids not moaning that it was like a sardine can, we had a Zafira prior to this and that used to rev its head off at 70mph, the replacement would have to have been comfortable as well.
I had a strict budget of £3500 when i was looking for mine, it had to have less than 100K on the clock and had to be a light colour, i was down to a handful of cars:
7 series BMW
Omega Elite
C or E class Merc
The 7 series had the wrong image for me (sorry to all those BM drivers) the Merc didn't have enough toys and the Omega i found i didn't like originally, i wanted a prefacelift, never really like the look of the facelift models.
However it fitted the bill perfectly, since then i have done 40,000 since april '06, it has been utterly reliable and have served me well, however i have a feeling that it will be time to part company soon and so she will be up for sale.
Her replacement......another 2.5 Elite, but this time i will get the LPG conversion done so as to save money.
There are so many other reasons why i bought her, but i suppose value for money was the one that stood out the most.
-
..... I always struggled to understand why Vaux ditched the Carlton/Senator and then expected 1 car to replace it, ........
You & me too. The 'oval badge' maker tried to do the same thing with the Mundane & Scorpio/Granada and they failed too. It's been left to the Vectra now to take the place of the Omega too as Vauxhall have had the last 3 years or so to bring out another Omega.... and haven't.
-
A bloke down the road got an Omega that I used to walk past every day, liked the look of it, got chatting to him and when I found out what he paid for it I was amazed.
I wanted a big saloon, with lots of toys, and right wheel drive and found you get a lot of "bang for your bucks" when you buy a Meega.
I also wanted o good tow car cos I pull a bloody big boat from time to time. I used to own a Granny and find the Omega streets ahead as a tow car.
The rests history here I am three years later and still chuffed to f*ck with my luxobarge :y
-
Also owned a SAAB previously but someone ran into it and wrote it off. Needed to replace it with something cheap, relible, comfy and with adequate power.Being a rear wheel drive was an added bonus since i do some towing. Extremely pleased with my Omega, alot of car for the money considering i hadn't given them a thought before my other car was written off.Even my wife loves it and she is not that mad about cars. :D
-
When I first started working and earning my 1st new car was a Nova 1.3SR. I went on to have an A, B, C, and D reg. Then moved to a D reg Cavalier CD - I loved this car. Then had a black Carlton Diplomat, my first AUTO. Once I'd a taste for the larger executive car I had to stick with it. Replaced it with an N reg Omega CDX (Auto), after I'd been stopped by the cops for going through a red light (allegedly) and having to sit in the back of a white one. I liked it so much I had to have one. Recently got hold of a V reg Elite Auto - beautiful car. Also bought a new Mini Cooper R56 but the wife still prefers the Omega and takes it to work every day. We nearly always take the larger car if we're going anywhere - air-cons gone though, pity.

After birth of our daughter like most dad's I decided we needed a bigger car to carry everything but the kitchen sink when we went away/hols. After few months with Peugot 406 estate we started to get some electrical/computer problems and found out that this was not uncommon and potentially hugely expensive when out of warranty. Wife got a mondeo so we didn't need estate any more, but did need a comfortable largish car for long distances/transporting my elderly father (with additional mobility problems) around. Was looking at older BMW's and Merc's but plumped for an 02 2.2cdx which seemed good VFM. Liked the 2.2. but fancied a little more oomph and auto so p/x'd for an 03 2.6 with less than 20k on clock about 18 months ago. Only one previous owner and I leave you to decide if Ray Reardon as a previous omega owner adds or detracts from the kudos of omega owning ? Was in main dealer few months back to pick up after getting cilmate fan replaced when Ray (we're on first name terms now don't you know ;D) popped in and recognised his old car was there. He then proceeded to show off his newly imported Mustang (least that was what I think it was). Luckily I had my sunglasses on as the amount of chrome reflecting the sunlight could cause temporary blindness! Apart from various Police forces anyone else got a previous celebrity (use the word loosely here) owner.

Well, I once bought a Morris Marina from a chap who lived in the house where Cary Grant (the actor, not the tart off the X Factor) was born. Not quite what you asked but I was chuffed at the time. ;D ;D

I had (and still have) a BMW 840Ci as my fun car, which is a 4.4 V8 with 6-speed manual and RWD, great to drive but gets 18 MPG on a good day and I've had it as low as 14 MPG once! So not one to be using regularly or on long runs.
I had a 2.0 Audi for doing my more mundane driving, but even though it was ultra-reliable and cheap to run, it was more suited to driving me insane with the lack of power, and FWD with an open diff was a nightmare to get what little power it produced down on the road. So I was looking for something cheap, but with reasonable power, manual gearbox, decent handling and RWD. Enter the MV6, it ticks all the boxes, and is very well specified too, having just about every toy you'd want (I added the cruise control, electrochromatic mirror and rear blind from the Elite).
I have to be honest and say that I'm a little disappointed with the performance, it's a bit sluggish for a manual 3.0, but then it's a bloody huge 4-door car so shouldn't really complain too much. Lots better than the Audi it replaced, although I could well see myself swapping it for an early 540i if a decent one comes up (IIRC the older ones are 286 BHP and similar weight to the Omega).

My brother had one, R reg, not sure on engine size, as BMW started fiddling with the model names. Seem to recall that had shocking mpg, low 20s on a good run....?

I have had Vauxhall Cavaliers for years, liked the Senator then when the Omega was born fell in love with it, but couldn't afford one.....
Then I got fed up of having Cavs and decided to look for an Omega, as I haven't had a quickish car since my 2.8 Capri's in 1990-94... so started to do my homework about Omega's found this site :y

It'll be a 4.4, all E39 540i are; earlier (pre-1996) E34 models were 4.0. Funnily enough the later 545i are also 4.4 litre, so you can get a 540i in 4.0 or 4.4 engines, and both a 540i and 545i with the 4.4 engine! The 550i is a 4.8 V8.
Best MPG I've had from mine is ~23, but that was on a long run in terrible weather so speeds were low. I try and take the country roads wherever possible unless I'm on a long trip, hence my typical MPG being 16-18. I spend very little time in traffic though, even though I live in the city centre I'll use the bike for most journeys, and when I do need the car usually I'll be going straight out of the city when it's less busy so only really traffic lights to contend with for a few miles until I'm onto the bypass.
The Omega gets around 24-27 MPG and I drive it quite hard; the average tends to go up a bit whenever my dad borrows it. Of course mine also has the dual-fuel so whenever I can fill it with propane it's doing that 24-27 MPG at half the cost of petrol... how does the equivalent cost-wise of 48-54 MPG sound? :D
Hence why I have the Omega.... once I take into account the servicing and depreciation costs I'm saving by keeping the miles down on the BMW, it more than likely pays for itself, plus it's got 5 seats for when I need to take more than one passenger :).

Had a feeling it was a 4.4. Not hugely impressive either, but then again, another heavy car.
The 4.8 V8, is that the same as fitted in his current X5 (for once, that heap has been useful, as he is in the flooded area of country)?
