Title: Confrontation - James broke the law!!!
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 27 July 2007, 17:39:18
Working under the car, doing a few little jobs outside my girlfriends place. Some old busybody comes out of his house and storms over to me, wags his finger and says

"I hope you're not going to get oil everywhere"

I said

"Of course not, I always clean up behind myself". He was still wagging his finger at me (which we getting on my nerves) so I said "And don't you point your finger at me"

He then replied

"What you're doing is illegal - maintenance on the highway is an offense"

I replied with

"Here's my mobile phone - why don't you call the police, and tell them to come and get me"

To which he walked back into his house.

What a stupid old git -

Is it really illegal for me to be doing a few little servicing jobs outside my girlfriends place, on a dead quiet little road?

Yep illegal, but at least you, like me clean up all the mess from working on your beastie.

Unlike the Mondeo driving moron down my road who parks his crap heap right out on the road and then rinses his oil, break fluid, or whatever else he can find down the drain.  >:(

A few years ago i was doing some work on my car & one of our neighbours who was also a local council adviser told me it was not illegal to work on a car in the street providing you didn't get oil or grease on road or pavement & not leave anything around where someone could trip over or hurt themselves

Right then. I've done a bit of Googleing (Great verb that ;D) and found the following:

Question Q621
Can you repair vehicles on the road?

Answer
You cannot repair vehicles on a road if,

it is during the course of a business
it is for gain or reward
it causes annoyance to people in the vicinity
The only exception is that if the repairs are carried out following an accident or break down where it was necessary to do the repairs on the spot or within 72 hours.

This was found at this link. (http://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q621.htm)

Check it out for yourself for reliability of information :y

Remember last year when Pete, Mark and I stripped a 1999 MV6 outside my house in about 4 hours? The police turned up to enquire about the reported 'abaondoned vehicle'. Neighbours in bthe UK are the WORST in the world without question. Are they Jelous? (is that spet right?). This is why I do all my work on the driveway. Shuts them up. Even an engine chage like today, no mess. Everything cleaned up and put away. I frankly don't give a flying break what they think. If they whinge at me I will pop down the auction and buy the most hideous wreck I can find that has an MoT, tax it for 12 months and park it right outside their door!

I got asked this morning again.... 'Oh, having trouble again'. My response was no, no trouible at all. This is a hobby that saves me thousands. I bet you wish you could fix cars for free like me!

Worst case scenario, I reckon I may be able to pop it over to Brackley after work, on 1st Aug. (depending on roads)

Any LPG garages your/Oxford way that open late-ish?

The BP, about 1m from here, though 50ppl....

If cannot get before tomorrow, no desperate rush for a week, as I think next weekend is out...
