.....within reason....
I had a decent drive yesterday, dropped Junior off with Grandparents, that, coupled with SWMBO nodding off on the way back, meant the MV6 got a boot down the a9 and through central Scotland for 100 or so miles. And boy did it get caned :y
I am still amazed at how these things pull.
Specifically, crusing at 60-70-80mph steady, sports button on, engine note changed, and flooored. That acceleration from 70ish to err 80ish is really rapid..
I havent had a previous car that has accelerated in this range as the 3.0 does and ive had several hot hatches and a few BIG BMW`s. Chopped up and spat out an Impreza and a few big Volvos yesterday at this range...
I cant think of a car in sensible guiese / sensible price that can out run the Omegas Legs at this speed....
Anyone know of better?

Yup, one thats been chipped ::)

Yep, I really love that button on the gear selector with the big "S" on it ;) :y :y

Yes, but it's noisier, smaller and a lot less comfortable (and, actually, if I'm honest, starting to run out of puff by the time you approach 3 figures due to cr@p aerodynamics. Maybe I should stop being a girl and remove the windscreen?). Fuel consumption is not as bad though.

Oh, and you have to do that changing gear malarky yourself :y

well thats just a silly idea ;D

The 3.0 when running right does go. But the emphasis has to be on the 'when running' bit!
Try that against my new T5 and you will be looking rather foolish! ;D

That all depends on who hits the loud pedal first, me thinks ;)

Yeah, they go surprisingly well. I was in an E36 M3 Evo a couple weeks ago and it wasn't much if any faster. I want a project car for alongside the miggy, but it is hard to find something faster of a similar age and price!

Wheelspin competition, anyone?? Bet Ron wins!! :D :y ;D

Jaguar XJ saloon
power from 110-130 was shocking
I was not the driver

:DYou irresponsible, terrible people. You should all take leaf out of my book and show respect & consideration for your fellow road users. If i was an admin i'd remove this post, shut the site down & go looking for hot hatches!!! ;D

I've always wondered about traction on the 2wd T5. Drove a 4wd one once and it didn't appear to be a problem ::) Stepped sideways a bit if you hoofed it out of a roundabout but otherwise it was pretty firmly planted and very quick.

I know what you mean about performance. My mate has a celica gt4 and its not standard, we were driving the other day and i could keep with him no trouble in my mv6. i could see the shock on his face as he was overtaken by a big heavy vauxhall. He said tht the enigine sounds awesome from the outside when i went past!!!! I am going to seriously miss this car :( :( :( :(

I...... I am going to seriously miss this car :( :( :( :(
so don't sell it, keep on enjoying the look of surprise on the face of others!! ;D

I really want to keep it but "WIFE" has TOLD me its time to go, plus i have got company veichle too now. Whoever buys it will be seriously happy!!

Don't do it Nutty, I have lived to regret selling mine!!!

Aye Broocie, but Ronnies are more likely to be #22's or #55's on the tarmac than #11's!! ;D

They do go reasonably well once rolling, the big lardy ass isn't such an issue then :D
You do have to cane the tits off them though, I often find myself dropping to 3rd at 70MPH to get it going, barely any power at all in 5th at that speed. Not that I find that an issue as I enjoy driving my cars properly, but I think this engine is really crying out for a 6th gear to get the ratios a little closer making it easier to keep it on the boil.
My 840 will chew it up and spit it out at those speeds, due to an extra 100 BHP and better aerodynamics. Hardly a fair comparison though considering the price difference. Something like a Saab 9000 Aero with some mild tuning will easily accelerate quicker at higher speeds, and those can be bought for peanuts. Pretty reliable in pre-GM guise too I'm let to believe -- big let down is front wheel drive and general handling though, so the only thing it's really good at is straight line rolling start acceleration. Similar story with the T5.
I think the only real like for like competition is the E34 540i with 6-speed gearbox. Those are dropping towards £1500 now, have 286 BHP, great RWD handling especially in sport guise, and do pretty much everything the Omega does, just a little bit quicker. They're a lot older though, but come from an era when BMWs were built like brick outhouses, apparently much more reliable than the E39 if looked after. I'd probably jump at the chance if an immaculate one came up at decent money, but the pristine examples tend to hold their value a little better. Almost guaranteed to have less rust than an Omega, even with all those extra years of the paintwork taking a battering!
All-in though, I think the savage depreciation that the Omega suffers plays very much to its advantage when it comes to buying one 5+ years old. Not much comes close for the price. Reliability isn't great IMO (and the speed that they rust is a disgrace for a late 90s car costing nearly £30k new -- but then it's a Vauxhall, what do you expect) but they are reasonably cheap for parts, and just about DIY maintainable if you have arms like inspector gadget :D.
Oh and if you can find a dual-fuel one, the half price fuel bills make it even more of a bargain :).

well, my 'N' reg saab 9000 aero out-accelerates a 52-reg 3.2 omega estate at that speed - they're both autos, the miggy was in sport mode - the saab doesn't have (or need) one. And we tested it twice to be sure it wasn't a fluke :y
This was with both cars level at 70MPH (on a private test track of course) and flooring them both, the omega just couldn't catch the saab ... shame the saab's headgasket went a few weeks later ;D
The V6 does sound nice above 4k RPM, but I'm itching to get back to turbo power ... plus the aero has stiffer suspension than the normal saab 9000s, it handles better than the elite estate - although I'd guess it's probably on a par with an MV6 ...
-
whats this sport mode? I just use my left arm and leg and select 3rd gear!
I also enjoy harrassing Audi 3.0 up and down carriageways!

I have to say the 9000 Aero I had and especially the Carlsson would have mullered the Omega from any speed above 30mph.
Once you get to motorway speeds the pick on the Saabs was phenomenal.
Having owned both a manual (chipped) MV6 and and a 2.3 Carlsson at the same time I can assure you there really was no comparison. ;)
I want something with proper turbo power as a weekend car (Paasat is not exactly fun...).

Appreciate the comments on SAAB folks, but is it a fair comparison of normally aspirated against turbo power ( weak or not)
Just being devils advocate here... :)

I don't think the way the power is created is an issue really, as long as the price, size and equipment levels are comparable. As said before main drawback for me re. the Saab is that it's front-wheel drive. Bit quirky and old-man looking too, but then the Omega isn't really a Pininfarina masterpiece either ;)
I have absolutely no doubt the 9000 Aero will destroy even a 3.2 manual Omega from a rolling start. They have a huge torque advantage too, so you won't get caught "off the boil" as it's easy to do with the Omega due to its peaky engine and wide gear ratios. I guess the Carlsson one is even quicker... is it still a 5-speed, or is there a 6-speed version? Probably doesn't need it due to the wide torque spread, but I find even my 840 benefits from the 6-speed box, even though the engine is far more torquey than the Omega's.
IMO lack of power is the main frustration I have with the Omega, and considering I have the fastest retail model available that's not really a glowing compliment ;). Something like the low pressure turbo used on some of the newer Saabs (with the GM 3.0 V6) would work wonders with getting the power in earlier and stronger.

The more power you have, the more FWD becomes a problem. I wouldn't prefer a FWD that's faster than a miggy. The 3.0 miggy is very good for the price, even as an auto. I wouldn't describe it as powerful, but the pace is stunning for the price and belies the size of the car. Maybe I'm ruined, but unless it has a real 350hp+ then I don't see the point in paying more when the miggy is so cheap. That M3 Evo was supposed to have 300hp, but it wasn't even close to that. It wasn't much faster and not worth 50% more, much less 5x as much as a miggy!
-
FWD can be an issue until you fit an LSD, but then you're looking at a sizeable premium for that if retro-fitting to an existing car ... at the end of the day the choice of car comes down to many factors - budget being a big one!
The saab 9000 aero is well equipped - especially for its' age - it lacks three toys from the omega - a rain sensor, self-levelling suspension and a decent stereo (the omega has the bose setup). The first two aren't an issue, the last can be worked on. The point is it's well equipped for omega money ... ie, not a lot for what you get.
But if FWD is out of the question then that's going to narrow your choices a fair bit ...

Alas there are few rear wheel drive cars made any more, and even fewer that are both interesting and sensibly priced!
Yes the Saab has front wheel drive, but it is the most fun car for the money and the handling is superb (for a fwd) if the suspension is looked after (arb bushes are a common failing).
Actually the Aero came with a decent amplified system originally. I would still upgrade it though.
Rain sensing wipers I have never been bothered about. I prefer to choose when I use the wipers.
The self levelling suspension is excellent on the Elite, but is missing from the MV6 because it is not great in the handling stakes. There was self levelling done on the Griffin (Saab equivilant of the Elite).
The one advantage the Saab has, is tuneability... ;)
It can be tweaked to huge power outputs for not a lot and with a Quaife LSD it is capable of putting the power down effectively too. :)
However, the ride quaity in the Omega is in a different class!
