Title: testing the water
Post by: TheBoy on 08 August 2007, 22:16:44
For a small fee, would people be interested in having their own mini website under the omegaowners.com banner?  For example, it I had one, it would be http://theboy.omegaowners.com

What sort of diskspace and what sort of monthly bandwidth do you think would be sensible?  What sort of annual fee do you think?

Not sure if this will ever happen, just judging if there is any interest.

I'm a technophobe so would probably wait ages, then sign up, then wonder why I never did it before. ::)

Bandwidth, disc space....all lost on me  :-/

Thats it, simply a small website, most likely about your motor.

Just an idea, wasn't sure what the interest would be - many wouldn't be interested in having their own area, but I thought some would?

Unsure. My view is anything, not necessarily cars.  We certainly wouldn't allow anything illegal though.

Martin, just to see if viable, how much disk space and monthly bandwidth would you require, and what sort of annual fee would you be prepared to pay?

Send in a PM if you prefer

Depends on cost and what is available. Ranging from the preserved site to possibly some short sample mp3s, (enough of a song to get an idea but NOT the whole song - friends bands).

Coaches are about a few MB (2-4) and are accessed a few times a week.

Let me know total disk space requirements, estimated monthly bandwidth, and what sort of price you would be looking at.

It may not happen, but at least if I start gathering requirements, I can begin to see if its even feasible...

As said, still testing.  Not sure what (if any) email service we are going to release...  ...or cost.

Just fancy the address!

Any reaonable fee...

I'll have martin  :Dat :Domega :D=owners.com - not much space needed
Title: Re: testing the water
Post by: TheBoy on 16 August 2007, 08:56:10
We may have to limit who we can do it for to prevent users signing up to oof just for space which they can abuse. So many intermediate upwards...

I need some actuals on average space requirements so I can work out costs. eg 100Mb webspace? 50Mb mailbox? More?

Post by: Martin_1962 on 16 August 2007, 09:09:24
If I move my web site I would be looking at 10 to 20MB, maybe more.

(Filled up the free web space)

As to email - what about spam handling? IE stop it getting in in the first place? (As this fills many mail servers).

Don't need too much

For other reasons, there will be no spam filtering on email, so down to you're local antispam measures.

So around 50Mb webspace, and about same for mailbox for you Martin?

What about other people?

Just trying to get a feel for requirements still.  This still may not happen.

Using your requirements as a base, probably looking at around £10 per year for webspace and email, £6 for each indvidually. Is this in the ballpark people had in mind?

£10 sounds quite good the Onetel space is unreliable and the BT space is adverted

It will be unmolested, so no ads, popups, or similar.

We would only take action if it contained illegal or offensive material.  Or if it was soaking up excessive CPU.

Reliability is pretty good, same server as our images server.  Saying that, there was a network issue last night.

The email mailbox would be equally unmolested, which is why we don't want to switch on the (very aggressive) spam filter.

Additionally, Martin, if you want your domain hosted properly, may be able to do that as an aside to this depending on requirements ;)

123reg is a registrar, not hosting.  You've got a forwarder on the www record to redirect clients to your onetel hosting.  No idea how you've set up the email side.

Does 123reg allow you to specify your own 'A' record for www?
