Title: Stupid question No.1023
Post by: STMO123 on 17 August 2007, 21:38:20
I hear people talking of the dreaded ticking when the manifold gasket is suspected.  As far as I can work out, this stops when the engine warms up and the manifold expands to make a gas tight seal. Now, as the exhaust emissions test and, usually, most of the MOT in general are done with the engine warm or hot, does a leaky manifold gasket equal a failure note? :-/

So long as its not too bad. Mine passed the MOT with it blowing :y

If its quite when warmed up then it won't fail for that as there is no leak, is there?????
It would not always fail if it was leaking a little as long as it passed the emissions test, would normally only be an advisory.

Coz in my case it would be quite nice to start it in the morning and it be quieter than a diesel transit  :y ;D

Plus theres another reason......where my manifold is leaking its leaking hot exhaust gases straight over the engine thermostat......so....in theory ecu might reckon engine is hotter than it really is.....so fuel ecomony might be suffering...

There, thats answered your question  ;D ;)

Not quite sure what you mean TB  :-/......but on the 2.2's theres an engine thermostat just to left off of the exhaust manifold......my manifold is blowing on the lhs....therefore its possible its getting heated by the hot exhaust gases and giving a false reading to the ecu  :-/

Yup, I was right, smells like BS ;)   :-*

Temp sensor will only really be heat sensitive on the bit suspended in the coolant.  Dont think cheapo tech2 can do live data, as that would show.

As the leak 'seals' when warm, then very little gas escaping.

Would be interesting to get before/after reading to confirm though  :-/

Also, when hot exhaust gasses escape through the seal, they will cut a bigger hole so the situation is likely to deteriorate over time. It's obviously not as bad as with a leaking valve because the temperatures and pressure are lower than those right inside the combustion chamber, but the same principal applies.

On a more minor scale, the efficiency of an engine is dependant in part on good flow of exhaust gasses to ensure quick and full clearing of the combustion chamber, a leaking seal will create small turbulence at the exhaust port and will reduce efficiency. When an engine is run with no exhaust at all this can even cause overheating and burnt valves, but this is obviously taking this issue to the extreme....
