Title: Evening All
Post by: Bailes on 23 October 2008, 20:22:58
Hey...

Names Sam, im 15. I know quite a bit about engines and what not :)

Basically im here because this weekend im going with my cousin to view a few Omegas. The one he's particularly interested in is a 2.5 TD CDX Manual which is great because he only needs it for a year which means this time next year (When im turning 17) I'l be able to have it off him :) The 2.5 V6 Petrol, well I can afford the insurance it's the petrol Im worried about :( and 170bhp + RWD with a 17 year old behind the wheel  [smiley=shocked.gif]

Anyway were going to see 3 cars all together. That 2.5 TD CDX, a 2.5 CDX Manual and a 2.5 Elite Auto. The last two being petrols.
Just asking really what do we need to look out for etc? There all Pre-face models. I come from a family of fords [smiley=embarassed.gif] and my cousin drives a 1.8 Escort GTi 5 door on throttle bodies with a very expensive paint job, lowered a bit on anthracite alloys. Thing is his job will be taking him to Bristol every day (We Live in Bridgend, near Cardiff, South Wales) and he dosent want it going on the motorway clocking up the milage every day so an Omega for a year until he can get a new Insignia will suit him down the the ground. Now Manual or Auto dosent matter to him as on the motorway it will just be in 5th. So what things should I look out for really? I know the TDS lump is from a BMW and is pretty much bullet proof with regular oil changed but thats about it really?

Thanks, Bailes :D

"Hello" and Welcome  :)

You'll get lots of help in the "General Help" area as more experts read there than here ..  just a couple of points from me ..

1. IMHO the most important .... have a read about the warning lights, called the EML and the Emissions lights .. some cars have both, some only one ... and learn when they should come on and go out... it is not unknown for shady dealers to remove the bulbs to hide problems !!! So check and double check ! If you look at a V6 petrol then the "paperclip test or pedal test" as described in the "maintenance" section may be worthwhile doing !

2. Cambelt - this AND THE PULLEYS must be changed every 40,000 - ignore what the 80,000 folks say .. they are wrong. If you don't KNOW when it was last done .. it needs changing or you end up with an expensive lump of mangeld metal...  the belt doesn't go, the pulleys do...  :(

HTH  :)

Is that just with the Petrol lump or the BMW's TD lump aswell? I was under the impression this was chain driven?

Welcome aboard Sam. Good to see some one of such tender years has such knowledge & taste. The cambelt advice is for the V6 petrol & yes the BMW straight 6 "Denzil" is chain driven & tough as old boots. :y

One more question lol...

How 'nice' does the TD sound? Thing is I really like a nice 6 cylinder growl, I been in a 730i today and I can't believe what I've been missing since we got rid of the ST220 for the Volvo!.

Also will a Decat on the TD and full straight through pipes make it less 'laggy' and sound a bit more decent? Were going to see 3 Omega's tommorow and one Volvo 850 :)

Thanks Everyone...
And before anyone asks, nope Im not going to be a boy racer or a chav (especially if I want a Diesel Omega), neither do I like bodykits unless the subtle, huge exhausts or 'banging' music  [smiley=laugh.gif]

I do like sublte mods, as in...

Exhaust (Nice tone, quiet, subtle tailpipe)
Panel filters/Enclosed Induction kits
Lowering
OEM Alloys (Pref in a different colour to standard)

Etc etc :)
