Title: Cry of help for HG repair
Post by: tunnie on 25 August 2007, 09:59:18
Right, as you may know my dads 2.2 has a nakered HG, strong smell of petrol in the header tank, and lumpy on start up.

Its been like this for a month now (not been driven) due to various reasons not been able to fix it yet.

I really need to get it done, I was hoping to do it this or next weekend. (1st Sept) For unknown reasons I am left in the lurch, and i really need to get this done.

I have never done a HG before and being my dads car i want it done right!

So two questions really:

1) Is there anyone near me who could help? - Any fuel costs will be paid, fed and watered for your time here!

2) Could i limp it to the Wales meet?  :-/ - If so could it be done there?  :-?

About 1hr 50 mins.... ish (well thats what Jaime says!)

It last went to Birmingham & back, it used when it got back the coolant tank was virtually empty, not been used since.

personally i wouldnt. One two points.

1. Must e quite extensive head Failure to impact idle......ive had loads that appear to run fin with HG.
2. What if something goes wrong in Wales and you cant get it back  :o

A wekend at home in your newly tidyed garage and all should be fine.... :y

Yup garage is getting sorted today, ready for next week. But with Jaime away I am a bit nervous, actually make that very scared about attempting this with no help.......

You know what i am like with shearing bolts!  ::)  :-[

lub and clean every bolt before loosening ( plus gas etc) use a torque wrench and proper torx/ socket dont apply too much pressure and stop when you think its getting to hard to remove a bolt - that way you wont shear or round.

Head bolts shouldnt shear by doing the above.....

Take your time and start to strip her down.... :D

Yep. Echo the above. Don't set yourself a tight deadline, it gets done when it's done. When you get stuck on something don't panic, just take a break and come back fresh to it. It's not a hard job and immensely satisfying when you have completed it, especially if you've done it on your tod.

First thing to do is take the head off.....not hard at all to do.

Are you going to re-build the head with new stem seals etc?

As I said to you earlier, take your time, it is in your capabilities. D not rush.

Perhaps strip down one weekend, get it machined in the week, rebuild the next weekend.

Never done a 2.2 Omega before, but guess Haynes covers 2.0 fairly well. Check TIS as well.

I think (can someone please confirm) that 90 degrees past TDC should leave engine 'safe' from piston v valves battle.

Don't shear head bolts, either during removal or refit - you will be it shit street then.

Yep. Turn it to 90deg from TDC and you can take everything apart without worrying as the pistons will all be 1/2 way down the bores.

Too far, not realistic.  Besides, I have a gut feeling that the head will need machining, as has been driven to Brum and back with failed gasket...
