Well what a week, strange goings on here, and a busy week at work!
I am a regular reader of smstextnews.com, being in the mobile industry, its an interesting site.
Well few weeks ago, the guy who runs it ran a free bash. Unlimited free food and drinks in a bar in Mayfair.
Well i had to go! It was great, got to show off my Uni project and going to have lunch with the organiser Ewan MacLeod who is the CEO of a company called Interactive Engergy, he has his fingers in a lots of other pies too.
So i got smashed for free, can't complain!
I also get mentioned in his blog:

Its right down the bottom near the pictures (Mark Tunnicliffe @ Pitch)
Was good end to the week, went to a dog racing track with work (another free bash) won £15 on the dogs! :D
Then saw the football match in a bar in Regent street, on Wednesday night.... again another free bash!
Got smashed 3 nights in a row, never bought a beer! :D :D ;D

It's official, from the Horses mouth!
Since leaving Uni, Tunnie has gone to the dogs!

Only thing thats changed, really, is that he's now a professional bum rather than a student one..... ;D
Good luck with the career Tunnie! ;)

Cheers!
Beer drinking aside I had an excellent week, learnt a lot about the company and behind the scenes stuff and future plans. My job role is expanding massively into 2 areas as well. I shall be learning a lot of specialist info regarding mobile aggregators (mBlox, IPX) for those in the know. So really pleased the direction this job is going :)
Taking on a lot more work, but as i mentioned to my boss I want to take it on. Knowledge is power!
Power = Money ;) ;D

I got some free beer through work this week... Sitting outside a bar in Munich (at least it was warm enough ::)). Had to put up with the Germans taking the p**s ad nauseum when the footie ended though. ::)

IPX an mobile aggregator run by Ericsson, an aggregator forwards our premium sms & wap push traffic (as well as bulk sms) to the customer, because each territory sorry, country! Has so, so many mobile operators, we deal with a aggregator in that country who deal with all the individual networks.
Aggregators love us, cause we make them loads of money as they take a % slice of the premium sms rate.

Yes, the company I used to work for had (and I think still has) the largest NDS tree in the world, which I used to support 7 or 8 years ago...
NetWare was a good product, but Novell took their eye off the ball whilst attempting to take on Microsoft....

My old company - a large, very well known company. A few banks still have legacy servers, as Novell could reach C2 compliance easier than Micosoft, as Windows NT 3.51 could only reach C2 if you removed NICs....

Quite a few who are not BG worshipers - a few but not many of our customers.
We have one along with a 2003 box and the older one is quicker.
One of our customers local IT support are Novell specialists

Not every company replaces its computers yearly
2003 server is no great shakes either - keeps grinding to a halt when busy

Most companies replace on a 4 - 5yr cylce for servers.
Windows 2003 makes an excellent workgroup to midrange server. If you're getting it slowing down big time, you need to investigate why, and fix. I would argue that w2k3 is faster than the similar NetWare (NetWare 6/6.5) which gets bogged down in the standard Linux way under load. And, the forum VM is hosted on a w2k3 server ;)
NetWare was a great product back in its early days (v2 - 2.2 was a little unstable at times), but due to old, ill considered architecture, any process could abend the server (in the same fashion as 16 bit Windows apps) - Cheyenne (now CA) ARCserve used to be a big one for abending the servers. They fixed the architecture in v5 to help, but it took a huge performance hit.
NDS was a brilliant directory, but Novell found it difficult to provide a use for it.
I have fond memories of NetWare 2.2,3.11,4.1 (not so fond v5 and 6!), but these are old, unsupported, unsuitable (today) systems. Time to move on.
w2k3 is being replaced early next year with Server 2008, and not before time (2003 R2 was just a minor update).

Our customers best servers were 5.1, we had weird abends with 3.12 which were a result of an issue in it (can't remember what BTW), our is I think 6.0.
THere is one thing I detest about windows of any version post 95 - all the animation - I know it can be turned off - but it gave me headaches and is totally not needed with a server

Don't know anything about servers, mobiles OS's etc but I do know about people getting pi**ed at work get togethers.
The clever ones pretend to get tanked up and keep their wits about them. Talking to the right people and being seen in the right places. Don't forget that work p*ss ups are still work.
I learned the lesson the hard way by telling one of my bosses bosses what a p*ss head he was. I never lasted long after that and have never got stoned at a works do ever since.

And generally most are disabled by default on servers....
KnitWare v5 was sloooooowwww. v6 got all bogged down have to run Suse Linux underneath - the small, tight kernel of v2/3/4 (v1 was not for x86 systems, but ran on some deciated Motorola hardware) was its key to its speed.
