Just to check how many of you guys are using Optimax. I used to use it 80% of the time but now the prices have come down some i have been using it for the past few months all the time. In Cov its 99P and the car seem to run better on it. IF i put £20 i can get 120-130max on mostly motorway run with some town driving which i think is good for a 3.2. [smiley=smiley.gif]
Just to see what you guys think and how for you get on £20.
Thanks.

Shell Optimax and BP Ultimate are still about £1.05 per litre around here - too expensive to use all the time. I tend to use Sainsbury's super unleaded at the moment which is about 96-97p per litre.
£20 only gets me about 100 miles :'(

and me :'( none of the higher octane fuels seem to make much difference to consumption on mine, but it does seem to run a little better probably why i still only get 100 from £20 ;)

I think it is it is becuse i drive like an old lady , open her up now an then when by son is not in the back. I used to use Sainsbury,s seems like good stuf and a good price. Even better when they are doing the 5p off per liter offer [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

It does make me feel good, giving the old girl a decent drink from time to time. It's 106p per litre down here so I don't do it too often.
By the way, I also put Optimax in the Omega from time to time. :y :y

I read a report on higher octane petrol compared with normal stuff. I know its a bit of a straw poll but the bmw used in the test returned an improved mpg of about 10% therefore that should offset the price difference between the two fuels

i use tesco all the time, not sure how much i get out of £20 because i tend to put in £25 each time, but i get about 160 miles out of it, i dont thrash my car, and its around 92.9ppl here at the moment

I know this thread is a few days old but I thought this was worth posting. Filled up with Shell Optimax a week ago and then again with Shell V-Power on Friday. Not to surprising there, cost me an arm and a leg at 106.9p per litre.
Just drove back from my Mum's in Bristol to Cornwall. Kept the cruise control on all the way at 70mph except for the short section that is not dual carriageway when I dropped to 60mph. Including the 3 miles onto the M5 at Bristol and the 4 miles from the A30 to home I averaged 38.9 mpg and used only 4.2 gallons over the 164 miles door to door. This means total cost of £20.40 for the run.
Compare this to the run when I use Tesco petrol when I usually get 32 mpg on the same run. At 91.9p per litre that would cost £21.40. I know this is not a huge saving but I feel that the benefit of using a premium fuel must add something to the equation.
I would be interested to see if anyone has the same experience.

I know, if I could get it for that I wouldn't use anything else from now on. However, I was never convinced about the premium/budget fuel debate; I am now. I will try to find a local place selling for a better price and will go there in future. Wakefield is a little far to fill up though. ;)

I have to bite the counter when I put the high octain Tesco fuel in here as its £1.04 :'(

This site (http://www.petrolprices.com) could be handy to save a few pennies on fuel. Free to register, gives cheapest fuel within whatever radius of your postcode you input. Saves me a few quid on Optimax.

I did a test a while ago in a 2002 mondeo 1.8lx , it cost me £3 more to fill the tank with optimax instead of tesco fuel , but i got another 55 miles out of it.
So all in all it is better to have optimax in , in my opinion.
Matt :)

I am signed up to this site but didn't realise that you could search for 'Super' Unleaded until you pointed me back there. They just used to tell me Tesco or Asda. Looks like I can get V-Power, the new Optimax, for 99.8p per litre 11 miles from home.
Thanks Mate. :) :) :)

Mine just 'sounds' better with V power...I'm sure it's not my imagination :-/

Your welcome!
Cheapest for me is 97.9 only 5 miles from home.
Saves almost £3 per tankfill..... :y

I used to use Shell Optimax, then for a period of time BT Ultimate, and now I am using the less-advertised Texaco High-Octane. I haven't used 95 RON in two years now.
The main reason for me is that the fuel is supposed to be cleaner and the added detergents. However, I still add Redex with each tankful for good measure.
I don't know if there is any significant improvement in MPG as I don't actually check this very often. On the performance side, I seem to think that the engine feels as if it has a bit 'more bite' with the Texaco compared to BT and Shell, but nothing I can measure. At any rate as I said out and out performance is not my main concern, the longativity of the engine is (I had the car for 6 years and may keep it for a few more...).
And if you were wondering why I swapped between petrol companies, well it is simply down to logistics, and at the moment Texaco petrol stations are easier to find on my usual routes.

I found a huge difference while towing, but I now get 16mpg when towing but that is on LPG - which works out the equivalent of around 36 or 38 on high octane petrol on costs, it is worth the 2mpg drop

It will be interesting to see what we get when we tow the van to Newent on Friday.
