Just started to clear my breather but can not get the wipers off. :-[
Have removed the cap, nut and washer - is there anything I've missed or do I just need to be more forceful?
Thanks
-
Brute force and a little left right wiggling will do it.....knuckle scraping though ;)
-
Nope thats it. Sometimes they stick. I find, folding wiper up, then pressing down where the folding bit hinges, often helps...
-
Thanks for the quick replies folks.
As I thought - Since the wipers don't look like they have been off for a while, guess the breather is overdue for a clean.
-
If you get realy stuck then a ball joint splitter, the type with the wind in bolt, works quite well apparantly
-
it worked on mine last week, passenger side would not come off till I used the splitter.
-
Got the wipers off and now everything stripped down ready to be cleaned. :)
However, now that the plenum is off, I've noticed the end of a pipe that I'm sure I didn't disconnect! It rises at the back of the engine just to the right of the breathers I have removed. It has an external diameter of 10mm and is more rigid like a vacuum hose. Any idea what it is and where it should be connected?
-
If yours is an auto, its the autobox breather. Doesn't connect :)
-
Auto it is, thanks.
-
For reference there are such things as wiper arm pullers, cost around £5 or £6.
I got mine off using a 13mm spanner as a lever, they were bl**dy tight.

i quick light swear of copper grease tends to prevent it reoccurring...

Done, as it has all got to come off again.
Pipes not too bad but found it really hard to force the wire into the smaller nipple, it was solid! Whilst it was striped down, checked the plugs and it looks like the gaskets have already gone. Still, had to put everything back together as I need the car Saturday.
Will do the gasket in a couple of weeks, may try the condenser at the same time.

A quick question, what gaskets and seals are required when cleaning the breather system?
I will be doing the cam cover gaskets at the same time, I want to make sure I've got all the bits I need before I start (The Vx dealer is about an hour round trip). I will be ordering them so I can collect them on the way home from work (that's a while away yet!)

Salty:
Dont usually need any seals etc when cleaning breathers or throttles, the O rings are usually OK to re-use, there is a special rubber seal in the breather housing (bit with ecotec on it) but , again, it is usually OK. The small breather pipe can have gone hard where it joins the breather box behind RH head, if it splits just cut it back a bit.
Camcover gaskets..... Only use genuine VX gaskets, you will also need a tube of BLACK sealant and a set of O rings for the cover bolts.
Some cellulose thinners or carb cleaner is required for cleaning the head and cover groove before fitting new gaskets.
Where are you based? There seems to be a queue forming for camcover gaskets in the Nottingham Area.
-
I'm near Blackpool, don't think there is anybody else close to me on the forum yet.
I was wondering if there was a gasket between the the throttle chamber and plenum and if this needed replacing?
-
Nope just the 6 O rings - quite cheap from AutoVaux
-
Great, thanks for that [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
I'll just get the stuff I need for the cam covers then :)

Pete are you trying to suggest something here... ;D
I note also this is posted while Mark is away for the weekend! ;)
-
A big thankyou to Mark. :)
I have just been to collect a seal set (5 minutes down the road) so that I can complete my camcovers this weekend and what a gentleman.
Thanks
