Took it down ATS, who were very helpfull had it on the ramps and let me have a look, he said it was the head to the manifold?? Which is blowing... :'(
Not sure what to do now, only paid £300 for it, I doubt i could strip the car as quick as Ronnie did, would take me several weeks to do that i think!!
On the plus side, the leather interior is in fairly good condition, no rips or cuts, just needs a clean.
All the door cars are good, with the 'rare' rear demist slots.
No alloys though and no climate panel.... :(
So bit stuck for what to do.... still waiting for the sodding Log Book! >:(
1) Sell it as is, and just describe the fault and sell for as much as possible
2) Break it - Apart from the leather and door cards, not much to sell :(
3) Anyone here fancy a project? ;D
-
I might be after a project for the winter (might) which side manifold is leaking :-?

Passenger side, and been told its the carbon bit inbetween the manifold and gasket :-/
-
Change the gasket....not that hard to do.....
-
Just been out to look at mine does look like a bit of a tight squeeze maybe out with the drivers side engine mount tilt the engine over and swear away ;D.
would be a b'stard job though if the bolts started snapping.
-

Whats your way of doing it, my impression was that its an engine out job? - Access seams very tight down there from above the engine, underneath access seamed no better :-/
But i heard you might have a special way ;)
-
tbh i thought this was an engine out ........when i read but bet Mark has a better way :)
Personally id break it - i am doing similar as you know with a similar value car.
Does it have alloys, cd changer and rear blind, and fogs. If so theres most of your money already!!!
-
I think it can be done (just) without moving the engine. Someone did manage it on the other forum.
Mark says it can be done by just lifting and shifting the engine a bit.
Problem is that if a stud shears you really do need to take the engine out. I'd say that there is a distinct possibility of a stud going.

I am sure Mark has a better way... maybe i should go via Nottingham on the way to the Petrol station! ;D
Er in answer to your question markiec.... Nope, nope, nope (its an estate), 1 fog light is cracked >:(
Has working aircon, but thats not much use.
Only remotly valuble bits are: Auto Dimming Mirror, Leccy Mirrors, Cruise, Tow Bar with Electrics, Leather Interior with door cards, Tax Disc (Dec '06)
Doubt i can make 300 with that, its got an MOT until december '06 as well...

Yup its a '95 car and there is a lot of rusted parts in the bay :(
-
On the later ones (with the smaller 4 way ABS stup) you can just squeeze it out.....on the early ones its a case of pop the engine mounts off and hoic it over a few inches..
Some times you are lucky and the studs come out of the head and you dont need to move the engine at all.
-
You wouldnt believe what would sell Tunnie.......in short EVERYTHING
Fog lamp switches, airbags, electric mirror switches headlights, badges, it will all go in time. Window regulators, window glass etc
Check ebay completed items and see.....My current breaking 1995 rover with no toys has lost (along with the things you would expect to go) its front and rear bumpers, bonnet, 1 door, both front windows, carpets, roof lining, second hand calipers.....
-
....but it is of course more proactive to fix rather than break :) ;D
-
think my dad might complain to come back home to find his side of the garage full of bits... ;D
I can see where you comming from.. doing something like Ronnie did might be interesting! Stripping the car in a matter of hours
A full leather inteior for an estate is not common, so maybe a few people on here with Plod estates might be interested in it! :)
Think my plan is, wait for the log book to arrive cause its taking ages! >:( - But on autotrader, and if it does not sell break it.
Problem with that though is to break would take time, and sell its bit. Something i don't really have as this time next month i am due back at uni...
-
i see where you are coming from too, i am lucky in so much that i have a huge garage and everything hides away in there - its big enough for 3 cars........
reckon those nuts will shread - just a hunch...
-
i think they would too...
just re-read my post above, my god how many spelling and grammer mistakes did i write! ;D
Wish the log book would hurry up.... >:(

I would have a go at what Mark suggested......
If you soak the studs in WD40 or similar the day before.....you'll have a better chance of them not snapping [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
-
Even though I have Expert Status on here ::)
I doubt i could do it, even just moving the engine a bit. I don't have to tools to move or lift the engine atall.
-
Breaking a car for the sake of a manifold gasket change is a bit extreme....
You can get the nuts/studs off without moving the engine (fiddly but can be done).
Then try to wiggle it out, you can always try levering the engine over.
-
You make it sound so simple Mark! ;)
I take it you have to remove the heatshield to get acess to it? as i can't even see the manifold....
Might sell it as is... and move on to a more fun Project, I want an Oil Cooler fail one! ;D

Go on Tunnie....have a go at it.....im sure you can do it [smiley=smiley.gif]
And if you do have probs you'll have help here.....plus maybe Jaime will help...
I'm gonna change the rad thermostat on my new veccy shortly....its nowhere near the rad....in fact built into the engine casing....i had probs when i changed it on my other veccy....but now i know what im doing ;)
Still waiting for my TC card :( before i go vx dealer.....i need thermo for it / 10 ltr antifreeze...plus 20ltr of oil.....its been 4 weeks now since i applied....not heard a word :(
-
Oh....plus air filter....its really clogged up.....and Halfords dont stock em.....so carnt use trade card there :(
Plus Omega is due oil change so need a vx filter for that.....still under warranty so want to use gen vx parts.
-
Tunnie, if you break the car, remember it has Projector headlights. Worth something.
-
I want an Oil Cooler fail one! ;D
Bloody mad fool ;)
-
If my oil cooler fails you can have mine. Hope I'm not tempting fate :)
-

;D ;D
Care to swap projects? ;)
I don't really want to break it, although the gearbox is on its last legs (feels like it going out of second :o)
-
At least yours goes!
Furthest I could get mine is the other side of Halse and back. Then it dumped its coolant >:(

Oh another burst coolant pipe? - Same one you replaced before?
Well mine goes, but sounds quite bad.... and if any mud gets on the windscreen your nakered cause the washer jets are stuffed!
-
Nah, blew it out of coolant expansion cap >:(
Can't remember, did you say if it was the heated jets blocked, or the pipes?
-

:o :o
The blocked top rad pipe maybe? One end was cool and the other was hot, maybe there is a blockage or air pocket in there?
Think its the pipe, motor works. When trying to remove the pipe to the drivers side jet, i accidently ripped the rubber. So tryed to wash the window anyway, had the pumping noise but no water came out from the jets, or around the bottom of the pipe were i ripped it.
So there must be a blockage between the main washer bottle and the pipes which lead to the bonnet. No water comes out of the tailgate washer either... :-/
-
Easy fix then, replace the pipe ;) (or check if its got crimped anywhere). Piping is about £2.99 for 5m from most car shops, except the miserable person with no father in Brackley...

;D
I notice admins can sware without it being filtered ;) * No they can't!
Yeh now i have a book of lies i can souce were it connects on, and run a new pipe.
-
If the tailgate washer is not working remove the jet (need to get access to back of it to press in two 'wings') cut off the pipe and check you have pressure and that the pipe isnt trapped or split somewhere.
Blockage is likely to be in the jet itself, I had no success cleaning one out so bought a new one and was surprised how cheap it was.
-
Replacing the jets is the best plan as you can never completely unblock them
-
i doubt even water is reaching the gets, my plan was to take the rubber pipe off to the drivers side washer get, i accidently ripped a good chunk of pipe out (was using long nosed pliers..) With a good 1/2 inch of the pipe being ripped i tryed the washer jets again, but still no water came dripping out of the pipe.
I think something there are 2 seperate pipes which leave the motor (checked & working) 1 pipe for the front and 1 for the rear i think it must have got caught someware or pinched....

Whip the head off. It's not that difficult, there is a lot involved but each step is easy so just do one step at a time. Once you have one head off and see the condition of the head gasket you'll want to do the other one while you are at it :-)
The car only cost you £300 so it sounds ideal as a car to get experience on and if I can do it I'm sure that you can.
-
I agree breaking the car is extreme - but theres no sentiment here it was bought for profit.......and yes if it was only the manifold then its crazy.
But thinking of the other issues you have/had? cant quite remember what, thinking also its for profit and totalling up costs plus outlay on car against expected sale price s where i am conming from....
Blocked jets....here comes that bad word....on the rovers this is a commo problem and invariably its never motors its always a fragmented / pinched / leaking pipe ( normally a double whammy on the rover as the water leaks for months/ years down the rear pillar and speeds up the rusting process)
Different car but worth investigating maybe ? ;)
-

Here's a potential buyers for your estate's leather interior.

Strangely enough, I was running new tailgate pipes in my Rover 25 as they had split only a few weeks ago :)
Tunnie's original pump had seized solid, so we got replacement from scrappy...

Yup ripped one out of another '95 estate, tested the pump in a bottle of water. Got a nice water feature that Charlie Dimmock would have been proud of. Without the gauze on the water jets were about 7 feet long! ;D
Andy B, Many thanks for that Link.
I just e-mailed the guy, my Elite also has projector headlights too :)
Be interesting to see how much he will give me for the leather interior & projectors. I would not mind breaking even at this point and stripping it down for more parts for another project.....
Any thoughts guys on what I can push for on the complete interior? - Door Cards, Seats, Headrests, Projector lights?
I was also thinking of selling the car to him whole? - Charge a little more than I paid for it to break even & move on.

Tunnie - RE my PM the other day
I've got a fair few tools, including the Torx sockets.
I'd happily come for a drive over your way for a day and tackle the manifold with you, for the cost of some tea and bacon sarnies!
I'm sure together we'd manage it. I'm not an expert like Mark.. but I rebuilt the top end of my 3.0 elite on my own, and it ran afterwards!
-
Sounds like a cracking offer tunnie, i can smell that bacon already ;D
-
Hey, sounds like a exhaust gasket changing party in Brackley then! I'm sure Tunnie's mum can do some decent bacon butties, with a nice dollop of HP sauce :D

Well i can defo get the Bacon in, its all healthy stuff in at the moment 90% fat free this, and fat free that. No wonder i am 6ft4 and weigh 10stone! ;D
How much the do you rekon for parts? I need the head to the manifold for the passenger side, does anyone have a part number?
-
does anyone have a part number?
Why don't you check it on EPC ;)
-
i could do that... but i am on my laptop. My PC is still at 'work' - my laptop does't have a serial port!
-
Ah, EPC3 overcomes that problem - I'm surprised they haven't sent you the updated version yet, seeing as they automatically post out new versions. Or did you let you subscription lapse?
-
Looks like 24416110 but would need you to check if it is this gasket (difficult to work out exactly from diagram)
-
cheers for that, think my updated version has got lost in the post ::)
-
I feel bad now suggesting you bought this. I will offer to do the decent thing and buy the project car off you - at my price of course!
-

;D ;D
Don't think £1.50 would cover my costs! ;) ;D
Seriously though it is a bit shabby, and a lot more work than the first one. But could not have known all its problems before seeing it.
I doubt i will make a loss on it, my costs have been very low. It even had half a tank of fuel in it when i bought it!
Cause its Sept 1st & Reg change i think the DVLA are busy, but as soon as i get the Log Book its going on AT...
However the gearbox syncromesh is buggered as well i think, change gear at high revs in 2nd and the car lerchs forward and you hear some horrible sounds! :'(
Still got some good points, though, Leather, Manual, Estate. So i reckon someone will buy it.... i just won't make much money.
-
Tunnie. No offence mate mate, but what are you playing around at??
Be business minded. It is old and needs a lot of work to make a decent car again.
This is a car you break!
You make some money and you move on.
Stop wasting time doing anything else!

No offence taken dave, its just other issues in the way.
1) Time - I leave for Uni this time next month. My dad does not want his side of the garage full of bits when i go
2) Stripping - I can't strip a car in anyware near the time Fin has done, would take me a long time to strip it down.
3) More Time - Then I have to sell all the bits off, again would take a while
4) MOT & Tax - Its Tax'ed & MOT'd until December, which means it should sell. As I said in a PM to Fin - I almost sold it last week, fact that I did't have the log book it fell though
-
This is the shopping list for my passenger side manifold (year 2000 2.5 V6):
Prices are trade, excluding VAT (retail will be about 15% more).
Manifold gasket 24416110 £5.91
Manifold nuts x 7 11082413 £0.26 each
Manifold studs x 7 90106924 £0.45 each
Front pipe gasket 90499289 £4.55
SAI gaskets x 2 90467427 £0.40 each
Dipstick tube O-ring x 2 90467275
Coolant pipe seal x 2 9129999
-
Wow thanks for that, I did'nt realise it would cost just £15 / £18 :o
-
My downpipe gasket wasn't in bad shape so that didn't actually need replacing either.
I'm not sure the coolant pipe really has to come off - Haynes says so, but it looks like you could leave it in place.
BTW - I'm half talking from experience, I've just done the drivers side, but failed on the passenger side because a nut rounded off.
