Title: Elite Spare Wheel
Post by: Webby on 29 August 2006, 22:21:44
What size spare should a 2000 2.5 Elite Estate have ?

Went to Cornwall for the weekend, whilst there it was pointed out to me that one of my rear tyres was getting near the limit...ok, it was VERY bald on the inside...and had several large cuts in it..   :o .one hasty wheel change later and the spare is on... :-/

BUT...My spare is 195\65 R15 and has a big yellow sticker on it saying 80km/h limit... :-?

The standard wheels have 235\45 R17's..

Cheers

Phil

Yes, they use space savers.

My MV6 runs 234/45ZR17, and spare is 205...

I have the same trye size's fitted to my omega and the spare is the same size also but I don't have the sticker advising 80km/h 50mph

I don't have the warning, but you should stick to lower speeds when using the space savers...

Thanks guys, at least I know it's the same as others...I was concerned about 3 being 17's and the spare being a 15 - needless to say I drove at less than 50mph and only for the 5 miles or so to Kwik Fit for new boots....

Wasn't allowed to drive 200 miles at less than 50 to go to somewhere cheaper...that'll teach me not to check inside the tyre and not just the outside !

It is not a ‘space saver’ as such, it is a normal tyre, just narrower than the other four.

The speed restriction is not due to any inherent weakness in the tyre, but simply because the vehicle's handling characteristics will be affected by the fact that one tyre if of different width to the other three. But the tyre itself can take normal driving speeds.

What is annoying about this setup is that the spare tyre is brand new but can not be used for tyre rotation and therefore completely wasted, the right thing to do was probably to try and sell it then get a normal wheel from the scrappie with same-size tyre as the rest of the car, assuming it will fit in the space in the boot that is……

Naaa, too much work   ;D

Yes, due to the handling the car should be driven carefully. The tyre is capable of 'normal' speeds, but such things as braking will be less predictable and controllable with different size tyres on the axle...

I thought all Omegas with 205 or narrower had 'full size' spare. Only Elite with its 225 and MV6 with its 235 (I'm talking prefacelift) had smaller ones due to these tyres not fitting the space available...

Mine is a facelift CDX and has a narrower 195 spare.

Webby's 2000 though can be either facelift or pre-facelift...

markjay, what size are your tyres - I seem to recall they use 225 on facelift CDX, hence requirement for narrower spare...

Mine's a Facelift 2000 Elite...

What was confusing me is that JasonH (who pointed out how bald my tyre was) has a Facelift 2000 CD and his spare appears to be full size he has the 16" wheels and his spare is 16" with no speed restriction - maybe someone swapped it before...

your elite will have wider tyres. There is not room for this in the spare wheel bay, hence the smaller one.

My spare wheel does not have an actual ‘80km/h’ sticker on it, but it doesn’t need to because the narrow spare wheel speed restriction is in the Owners Manual. So the fact that JasonH’s Omega does not have a sticker does not mean much – the speed limit recommendation still applies as per the Owners Manual.

do all facelift elites have 225 tyres, just wondering if my elite was supplied with factory extras, as it has all the gadgets (Rear Blind, Bose Audio, Memory Seats, Heated Rear seats, Xenon lights), but it also has the 235/45ZR/17 tyres fitted, rear boot spolier, and the front skirt is different to that on other facelife elites I have seen (the fog lights are round not square)

I thought the facelift elites used 235 tyres on a 17" rim...

According to the sales brochoure, all facelifts except MV6 and Elite had 225/55x16 as standrad, though with different wheels.

Yup, my Elite originaly had the 235's on a 17" Rim. Michelin Pilot's. All facelift Elite/MV6 should be the same. Suspension on the facelift Elites and MV6's should also be the same, lower, as opposed to the pre-facelifts where only the MV6 was lowered.

I'm now running 265/35 x 18 on the back, but i've still got my wee space saver, complete with it's yellow sticker, in case of emergency.  :-?

Only ever used it briefly, cos it tends to take the look off the car.  :o

Incidentally, for reasons known only to themselves, Vx chose to fit a narower spare to the Elite&MV6 than fitted to the rest of the range...

The GLS/CD/CDX have 225/55x16 tyres and 205/65x15 spare

The Elite/MV6 have 235/45x17 tyres and 195/65x15 spare....

So the Elite/MV6 spare is not only narower than the GLS/CD/CDX, it also has a smaller diameter.

So are the Elite/Mv6 wheels 235/45x17 also smaller in diameter than the rest of the range 225/55x16? TheBoy, can you take out the calculus and let us know?

If so it will make for brisk acceleration at the expense of top speed...

Interesting...

That explains it then... I got those figures off the 2001 Sales Brochure.

Post by: STMO123 on 03 September 2006, 19:36:12
As far as I remember the figures are:

1) The width of the tyre tread eg 225/235

2) The distance from the wheel rim to the tread(tyre wall) expressed as a percentage of the tread width eg 45%/55%

3) The diameter of the wheel eg 16/17

The confiusing bit is that the first measurement is metric ie mm and the third is inches

I THINK!

EDIT: So the lower the figure in no 2. thr lower the profile
