Title: Exhausts
Post by: Webby on 05 September 2006, 14:18:02
It's MOT time and I know my exhaust is blowing   :'(

Rather than crawl underneath and take a look i'm just popping up to my local ATS to see what they say...I'm not buying from them, just see what they say is wrong, take a look whilst they've got it in the air and see what I need.... ;D

Question is, do I just fit an after-market one of go visit my vauxhall dealership and get one from there ?

Guess it depends on what I need...

I seem to remember a thread elsewhere on exhausts, but haven't found anything here.

P.

If you go the aftermarket route I would recommend www.buypartsbuy.co.uk it took two days, held back by one as I wasn't there to sign for it but redlivered the next day via DHL just in time for the MOT although it still failed (not exhaust related) :)

I got one from a local place, a lot cheaper, but probably won't last anywhere near as long. Sounds a bit louder on acceleration, but then I quite like that!

The genuine parts are much much better. The pattern ones are noisy (not even a nice noise).  If you can get on Trade Club, not too much difference in price...

Back from ATS ....

Need two centre pipes \ boxes and back box...ATS price £430.00 fitted...

They're concerned about drilling out the bolts on the cats...so am I !!   ::)

Time to do some price surfing....

Before I had TC, Vx dealer replaced my 2 mid sections and back box for £340...  ...obviously genuine parts.

Are the bolts from the centre box(s) to the cat(s) really bad then.

Granted I had one bolt snap but if you really careful you can drill them with out damaging the thread if they break.

Before I knew of other ways of getting VX parts ;) I got an aftermarket exhaust, everything from the Cats down.  Doesn't sound that bad, but is a heck of lot noisier than the old orignal one.

Could you here it above the sound of your pistons chatting to your valves?

Exhaust Trade club 30th May V6 2.5 cost me £210.00 + vat.

Bolts holding exhaust to cat would have snapped, heated them up  with gas -undid
no probs

Id be wary of non-VX exhausts - i got one one my old 2.5 and had to have it taken off after one week and about three refittings. It just wouldnt fit well and the noise was terrible. I got it replaced with a bosal and that was better tho.

My cat bolts look pretty bad. I expect they will shear.

If they had to be drilled out it looks like you could just put a bolt through the drilled out hole rather than re-tap the hole.

Apart from those 4 bolts the rest of the system just hangs on rubber loops.

A Vx TC system will be about £75 a side for mid-sections and £54 for the backbox (facelift 2.5 estate) all prices plus VAT. Total, all in £240.

However Darren Flynn (up Newcastle way, and I hope I got his name right) got a complete pre-facelift estate system fitted for around £174 (bargain).

So shop around in the first instance, and it might be worth getting a local garage to fit whatever you get because 2 people and a ramp would make life a lot easier.

For Bosal check these people out:

And

http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/

Have been used successfully by a couple of members of my family.

Yep, they're very difficult to get hold of alright.

Bosul don't make one and the VX ones are always on back order.  So you don't have a lot of choice.
