Right my car is an auto Nov 97 2.5 Omega Elite owned and dealer maintained these last 7 years. The car has done around 135,000 miles.
Haven't been able to do the paperclip test till now as unknown to me the bulb was blown.
The car runs very roughly particularly at 2000 rpm and lacks power. A few weeks ago I changed the plug leads and cleaned the breathers as per the very helpful guides this made no perceptable difference. Neither was an easy job to say the least. My next step was to change the DIS unit but....
Here are the results of the test excluding the 12 diagnostic start up code.
13 (Oxygen sensor?)
135 (check engine lamp?)
74 (air flow sensor?)
Any suggestions /ideas gratefully received.

Sounds like you my have an air leak on intake (hence the airflow error). Check air intake hoses for splits/leaks. Also, a failed EGR may cause similar issues I believe...

EGR ? Exhaust gas recirculating valve?

EGR ? Exhaust gas recirculating valve?
Yes.
-
The EGR can be blocked off with a bit of old cola can aluminium, It has no effect to block like this, and many have, rather than replace a knackered EGR.
-
I have a had a good look around the air intake pipes and cannot see any leaks, all the jubilee clips look good. Even the pipes around the Idle control valve. The only bit I cannot see is the very bottom of the multi ram chamber area sort of level with the bottom of the radiator. Is there a common place for a split?
The exhaust gas valve - if I blank it off what side efects are there. Might it be better to get a secondhand one or new if not too much.
One thought I had was that when I cleaned the breathers I had the throttle body off and carefully re-used the O rings could that be the cause? Perfomance wise the car psychologically went better after the clean but the poor running problem has been there some time now.
-
Could be the O rings, but could still be EGR (hopefully someone cleverer than me could confirm). There are no side effects to blanking EGR (if anything, it may run marginaly better)...

The 13 might be a 31 which you would get if the engine wasn't running - I'd check that before looking at the lambda sensors.
If it is a genuine 13 then then an air intake leak could still be the cause.
-
The engine was running while test done and I got my trusty assistant to help view and write down the results.
Have had another look and cannot see any air leaks. Have found a vacuum pipe to front multirams from rear of engine with a split and neatly executed bodge repair with sticky tape. I am pretty mad about it as the car was supposedly Vauxhall owned from new. Shall get a length (80 cm) ASAP. Is it something that a dealer would have on a roll?!

Oh yes they will.....and will probably try to charge you circa £14 for a metre of it, as i discovered a couple of weeks ago >:(

What you want that for on a 2.2 TD !!!
I'm intrigued !!!!

I haven't blanked off the EGR yet but still looking for an air leak.
When I did the clean up on the breathers, I had the Idle control valve off and gave that a clean. It seems a bit of a Heath Robinson seal on it. i.e. you just push it back in the hole. What stops it drooping with time and having an air leak?
My question is "Is there a special sealant, do you have to push the thing right in with some force so you can't see any of the rubber, or is there a missing strap or something?" That is probably 3 questions. Anyway could that be the problem?
-
It's not Vauxhalls best design of a compenent, but basically just make sure that the rubber is evenly inserted in the plenum as far as it will go. If you get it to seat right it shouldn't require loads of force. You shouldn't need any sealant around it.
-
Idle control valve seating is one of the worst designs I have seen on any car. All the holding effort on is the less important body rather tahn the vry important seal. typical crap design I'm afraid.
Vacuum pipe should not be a problem to get. Try your local electrical shop. You can use any tubing that is similar diameter.
EGR valve. Mixed opinions on this. yes it can be blanked off, but the danger is if you don't seal it correctly you could end up with CO leaks and in the engine bay that is bad as they tend to end up in your lungs. I would rather replace it myself, but that is me.
