Not looking forward to this :(
my car started to make a funny noise tonight in Blackpool, like a hissing noise, but mechanical orientated nature, not a gas/liquid hiss... so limped it back home, at some points the hiss became a whine, then went, but it is slowly getting louder than it originally was (covered some 60 miles limping it home)
Checked usual things just incase it was anything else, coolant, oil, etc, all fine, although the engine did seem to be running cooler on the way back, usually @ 70 it stays around 95C, but it was more in the region of 91/92C. Outside temp was 9C though, may explain it...
The noise does increase/decrease pitch & volume dependant on engine speed, not vehichle speed...
Now the bad bit...
How much?? Wanting it done A.S.A.P. really, even considering VX to do it (and prepair myself to bend over...)
Reading on one thread, the kit with idlers was quoted at £300?? this right??
Fooooook :(

I think the £300 was the fitted price. I got a cam belt kit for a V6 for £70 and fitted it myself with the aid of the DVD, it was not that hard to do!
-
Have to say that does not sound like your cambelt (could be the tensioner dying though...). When was it done?
Aux belt or tensioner possible with that sound.
Get the dvd, with it (and a locking kit!) you can tackle the cambelt. :)
I would not be driving it until I find out.
Take the aux belt off and start the engine. If the noise is still there, turn it off damn quick!
If it has gone, you know the problem lies on the aux system (water pump/alternator/PAS/aux belt tensioner).
-
I paid £82 for my kit, but they can be found for £70ish.
Might as well change the Aux belt if you're doing the Cambelt, it's gotta come off anyway.

Well the car is getting trailered this morning to my pal who owns his own garage, said he will sort it out for me... I cant really tackle it myself at the moment as I just dont have the time, now I'm back at uni, its a killer :(
tbh tho, £300 fitted from Vaux is cheaper than I thought it would of been!!
-
As for when the belt was last done, was done about 25k ago, and is documented 'to some extent' but there is no mention of tensioners being done aswell...
-
If it's any consolation, when my aux belt tensioner started it also frightened the whatsit out of me - especially as I'd been discussing the cambelt intervals earlier.
So one aux tensioner later and I felt so much better. Not that mine hissed, but was noisey (and worrying) when the air (and car) was cold. The noise went away after running for a bit. Oil sort of quietened it down to prove a point but couldn't quite get to the bearing face - it did get every where else mind!

I'm poor at fixing certain things aswell.... :'( Just had the same fitted by our local VX dealer on a 2003 with a water pump .. just to be on the safe side... Cost me nearly £420(depending where one lives it seems - 28 miles away from my home and a VXdealer could have done the job for £300 + a water pump..... :-/ puzzled) it's always good to know someone with the 'know how'...
signing out .. now..
Pocketless Dave (But it's worth it when i see the omega running as it should) :)
