Title: Ponytail or plaids?
Post by: Nickbat on 07 October 2006, 17:07:22
Bit worried - I've got hair growing out of my exhaust! :o :o

If I pull it, there seems no end...I just cut off about a foot and a half!

What is it? I would guess that my back box is disintegrating. Can I carry on (just giving it a haircut now and agan ;D), or will it adversely affect performance? Do I need to rush out and get a new back box?

Just the baffles coming out.

I believe it will still run OK, may get noisy though...

Change the backbox asap.

It will cause a restriction in the exhaust gas flow and affect performance.

Oh and a new one will make the car sound so much nicer! ;)

I would change the back box asap.....if that glass wool filling manages to block the flow then you get excessive backpressure which will upset the secondary air injection non-return valve and cut-off solenoid.

By upset I mean MELT the solenoid :o

OK, new back box it is then. BuyPartsBy are doing a Timax back box for £36.73 + vat, so not too serious an expense. Should be able to fit it myself.

That sounds cheap.  Last time i wanted a back box for my 2.0 i was quoted around £90 supplied, £100 fitted.

What is this website (no, not OOF) called?

The Timax one is cheap... and for a reason.

Personally I would not put a Timax exhaust on a 15 year old Yugo..... well actually I would! ;)

I certainly would not put it on an Omega. It is a cheap nasty replacement that is far too noisy!

Go get a genuine back box.

I'm with LB66 one this one (hey, I'm agreeing with you LB66 for once :D), if you can afford it, a genuine one is much quieter...

Laidback and The Boy, I agree with you both that an OEM back box would be best. However, this is a 1995 car and this week I'm forking out £65 for a new A/C valve and pipe and £75 for a new Uniroyal (which has worn down almost to the canvas on the inside -  hence my visit to Tony last week to get the geometry done).

I'd love a super back box, one that really brings out the V6 in all its glory. But I can't justify the extra expense on such an aged car, so although it may be cheap and nasty,  I think you can understand why I'm probably going for the Timax!!!!

BargeCaptain, the site is http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/

I can understand, but I don't think it is the right thing to do.

Horses for courses people.....I would always fit genuine but, its better to fit a cheap pattern part than not fit anything....

That's right, Mark. If I were single with no kids and a facelift 3.2 MV6, I wouldn't dream of getting anything else than genuine parts. As it is, I've two kids and a 1995 2.5..... The car's market value is probably no more than £600-£800 and I reckon I've spent that amount this summer just keeping it going! It doesn't mean I don't care about the car, though. I still have a soft spot for it. Going cheap in this case is a bit like treating your other half to fish and chips rather than a la carte at the Ritz.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D(Not a good analogy, I know!)

As you say, better to fit cheap pattern part than leave it as it is.

BTW. I've just found a place that does a Timax rear box for just £26.73

Not good to skimp on your omega, however funding permitting of course; been there done that, never again, potentially end up costing you more :'(

Mick, quite right I shouldn't skimp, but 26 quid for a cheapo box (OK, 40 odd after vat and delivery) is better than leaving it. If she's good to me during the winter, then maybe I'll treat the old girl to a better back box in the spring.  ; ;)
