Title: loud whirring noise
Post by: irratic on 11 October 2006, 18:19:38
hello folks.... got a 2.5 elite... on start up i have a load high pitch whirring noise that lasts for approx 45 seconds to a minute then goes off.. if i turn the engine off and straight back on it doesn't seem to do it, but leave the engine 10 minutes then start it the noise returns , it seems to be coming from some where around the air con compressor, my mate as a 2.5 and his doesn't do it... can anyone give me some advice please? thanks.. ive heard talk of a secondary air valve??? could it be that? or the bearing in it ? ( if it has bearings)......and while i'm here what type of glue do you use to stick up the auto rear view mirror?? as its about the size of a small suitcase.... many thanks for any help.

Noticed mine doing the same last night, shortly before one of the secondary air pipes blew.
I'd check the one way valve to make sure its not turned into a two way valve and check the rubber coupling pipes to make sure they aren't blown.

My Aircon compressor failed a couple of weeks ago, very little warning, made a noise once and that was it, completely seized, you could try removing the auxilary belt and spinning the pulley by hand when the car is cold to see if you can hear the noise

thanks for the replies, but the noise doesn't come and go as such. its like something is charging or spinning for a set period of time then turns itself off. ive tried with the eco on and off to see if the clutch on the compressor, but no different.. i think it is something that has to run for the first minute of startup then turns itself off (obviously with noisy bearing or something) but as i'm a new owner ive not yet found what all the bits and pieces do...

The stainless steel pipe that runs across the front of the engine has a piece of rubber pipe at each end. these connect to pipes coming from each exhaust manifold. The cylinder coming off the middle of the stainless pipe is where the one way valve lives.
Sorry I aint got a picture and its pishing down outside. Can anyone else post please?

You should be able to just turn the clutch plate, in front of the pulley, without removing the aux belt.

This sounds like the secondary air pump located in the wing in front of the nearside front tyre.  Runs for a bit on initial startup to aid emmisions levels.  Beond that, i'm not sure.  Others might help soon.

Read "secondary air valve" by Wigan Pier  (avalible at all good bookshops  "Unput downable - Bromsgrove Mercury")
Particularly the bit by Marks DTM Calib.  Hopefully should explain all.

that sounds more like what it could be, is the pump a diaphram pump ? or a centrifugal pump?

I belive it's not recomended to use araldite as this causes the screen to crack >:(

they do slot in, but the pad has come off. rang vauxhall and they say its glue with no sponge pad(like small mirrors have) but they want £13 for a tube i only want a couple of drops. and they wouldn't tell me what type of glue ie: locktite... i also no super glue makes the screen crack ( cos ive done that one a few years ago)

Mine makes a similar noise from the o/s wing, it is the self-levelling suspension pump.

Don't bother, just more stuff to break  >:(  The self-levelling sytem might go next spring so I can have Bilsteins.  ;)

My 2.5TD had a loud whirring noise once - used to last anything between 10-30 seconds, then the A/C compressor exploded - no more whirring noises.   :-/

Could be worth checking the Secondary air pump I know its been mentioned already but if the filter breaks up and gets into the pump this is what can cause the whirring/whining noise.

Worth a look its on the passenger side, up behind the horns better seen from beneath.

If the noise is coming from the passenger side wing area this would be the first thing I would check.

HTH :)

Secondary air injection for sure. Unplug it and see if it is the same.

If the one way valve has gone in the pipework, it will sound like the exhaust is blowing too for a while. Grab the top rubber hose for the A I and fold it to stop any flow. Any exhaust blowing noise shoud stop. If so, the one way valve has gon as well.

Pump is an easy 10 minute change. Costa bout a tenner from a breaker.
