Between jobs today and flitting back and forth between the breaking CDX and fixing Megane projects.
I noticed the lamba sensor not plugged into anywhere on the cdx and had a chortle as i thought about the fact theres a huge hole in the air intake....so many botched jobs on that vehicle!!
For no reason i decided to look at my 3.0 v6 underneath and see if the lamba sensors were in the same place.
Quite concerned to see either or both my cats or front pipes are pretty badly corroded. Thinking about it - i reckon its the manifold pipes...
I was sure recently i heard a slight blow recently but i am a kind of uber paranoid guy when it comes to my cars!
Now without putting the MV6 up on stands today... from the shots below can anyone advise if this is close to the end - it looks to me like the front pipes have two layers, is this the case....? If so the first layer is almost peeling off and a total goner!
question is - is this an imminent job ( theres no fumes, warning lights, noises or performance issues at all) and also how much !?

the curved pipe nearest and very bright is very badly corroded, opposite side is in the background and not much better

The first layer is just a heat shield. ;)

Just a heat shield....nothing to worry about....might rattle though.
-
Looks like although it's got a rusty appearance, the exhaust apppears solid enough and it's just the heat shields that are corroded.
I wouldn't worry about it at all, if there is no blows.
Maybe you just have a slight blow when cold but goes once warm? Could be the secondary air injection, or a slight leak on a manifold gasket, but I really wouldn't worry about it if it's not that bad.

thanks guys - had just come back into post up my conclusions - ie its just a shield, i think.
Had another look under the old cdx and it has not got the second layer - so my conclusion totally different design or as you have all advised the heat shield is disintegrated on the project car and my mv6 is starting to go that way...
Puts wallet back in pocket.... ;) ;D

Was wondering why my local butcher had a sale on. ;D

Both of these shields are loose on mine..
Are they needed?
They obviously rattle away like mad when the cars running.
Any ideas on an easy fix?
Cheers

yes mine are getting worse, im not sure apart from replacing them what would fix this :-/

I've not tried it myself........ yet, but if my downpipes looked that bad I would probably rip off the remaining heatshield and wrap the pipes with that heatproof bandage stuff you often see on race cars. The heatshield is there to stop your tootsies getting roasted and mine smell bad enough normally ::)
