Title: two choices
Post by: RobC_NE on 19 October 2006, 02:03:51
hey guys. probly posted this before lol... but whats easier/cheaper/quicker to do? change heads or swap engine?

failed cambelt led to many damaged valves. can get an engine for £250 (plus new timing kit and RC gaskets) or a pair of heads for £150 (plus new gaskets/bolts)

advice taken.

Rob :)

By heads, I presume you have a V6. Engine change is a big job. Changing heads is too! Problem is until you undo the exhaust manifold bolts, you won't know if they will come off without snapping. If they do not snap, then head change is the easiest of the two.

The heads would have to be from the same engine ie 2.5v6 or 3.0v6, don't use 2.5 heads on 3.0 and vice versa.

Head gasket kit, cambelt & tensioners kit and a water pump at the same time. Cam cover could be damaged as well.

Engine swap is much the same work and you would still need to do the cambelt/water pump unless you have concrete proof it had been done, otherwise you will be in the same boat very quickly.

On the plus side you know your engine other than the cambelt failure was ok. You don't know the same about the replacement do you?

I would go the head change route.....get some second hand heads (you CAN use 2.5 heads on the 3.0 but, it raises the compression ratio slightly) and give them a clean and re-build (the headgasket kits come with stem seals).

That way you can take your tme and do bits when possible, you also get the extra knowledge that you have good clean heads with good lifters, new exhaust manifold gaskets etc etc.

I wouldn't pay more than 100-120 quid for a set of heads.
