Title: Reversing light circuit
Post by: EddieX on 15 October 2006, 20:38:22
For every 4 times that I select reverse, the reversing lights come on once.
I guess it's a dodgy gearbox switch but I thought i'd ask the forum before buying a new one.

Eddie.

It sounds the most likely but, as a check, short out the two wires to the reverse light switch to prrove it as I have never known a switch to fail.....the switch is on the gearbox tail near the output shft on the passenger side.

Thanks for the quick reply. Won't try that test until next weekend as I'm too old for working under cars outside in the dark. ( cue mournfull violin :'( )
Think I'm getting that Altzhiemers too 'cos I wrote "circuit" in the subject line then forgot to ask if there are any gizmo's in circuit between the gearbox switch and the lights.

I would imagine there would be connectors for reverse parking sensors and auto dip rear view mirror....but not much else i woulnt think

There are no Gizmos in the circuit....just connectors and a switch. As for connectors, there are a few and hence the request to short the wires out to prove the fault location

At last I've found time to post this.
Followed New Dad's instructions, (best wishes to you both :)) and the wiring checks out OK.
Removed switch, metered it out and it works. To my supprise, it is a 'normally closed' type.
Replace switch, reversing lights work.
Arn't cars odd like that?  :-/

Not that surprising....it is sat in oil when fitted so may show slightly different behaviour
