Title: OIL smell
Post by: Old Sweat-RIPscoob on 27 October 2006, 13:56:57
I know from reading around this forum what the problem is, I think one of my rocker gaskets is leaking,
I get an oily smell through the air vents occasionally and I had to put a litre of oil in the car today to top it up.

As I look in the engine bay, under the pulley wheels there appears to be a metal lip sticking out, there seems to be oil all along it  :'(

I know I should check and clear the breather pipes, can anyone post up a picture of the breather pipes I need to take off????
I would appreciate it,
I have only recently bought the car and as it has done 85,000 miles I know I should change the cambelt asap, can anyone tell me how much this will be for the total job?

And lastly does anyone know of a good Vauxhall mechanic in West Sussex?

Thankyou for your time everyone, I've had a Scoob for the last six years, so I've got to re learn another car and find all the relevant people to speak to :y

Pull the plug leads out and check for oil on them.

Also run your hand around the back of the banks and feel for a rubber half moon shaped plug, these sometimes leak..

Oil in either of these places = rocker gasket(s) leaking.

Get the cambelt changed and the tensioners, might as well get a new aux belt fitted too ;)

Not sure on price as I do all my own work, so am only paying for parts.

Welcome to Omega world :)

I'd also recommend a new water pump while the belts are off.

If you're handy with the spanners, cambelt job could be diy and there's an excellent dvd available here on the forum of the job being done. To get the belt done at a dealer will be expensive £300 - 400 maybe!
Others will be along soon I'm sure to guide you further.  [smiley=happy.gif]
