Title: screeeeechhhhhhhh!!!!!!
Post by: infinity1 on 17 August 2006, 20:57:12
hi all,hopefully someone can help???
just had my wishbones changed, lovely no problem, slight trouble was upon driving home, going round a roundabout, the drivers side front tyre was screeching even though i was only doing 25/30 mph, next roundabout was the same ,and turning into my road also, much to my embarrasment with the neighbours..not horrendous screech but tyre noise all the same.didnt do it,even  as hard as i tried with the old wishbones on... any one got any ideas as to why? camber, wheels need realigning????etc etc
a point in the right direction from someone please,as i cant afford another set of tyres yet!

Certainly will need an alignment down after any suspension work...

Depending on how the wishbones were done your camber could need adjustment as well as the toe.

And before you go running off to your local KwikFit, you should brush up by visiting wheels-inmotion. An informative read.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Mine are doing the same after I changed/corrected the wishbone bushes.....

Needs the tracking doing as a minimum.

If your bones were well knackered but the wheels adjusted to track straight, your toe will now be a million miles out and you'll destroy your front tyres in no time at all.  Took me about 100 miles! Doh!!  Get that alignment sorted asap.

You should arm yourself with some info before you go and get it done, unless of course you know for sure the guy knows what he is doing.

S'why i said you should check out http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk  ::)

Most places can't do camber. Look at wheels-inmotion as suggested...

In Nottingham I do recommend Nottingham 4 wheel alignment centre. Mick is a friendly bloke and doesn't pad the job out with extras you don't need. Mine only needed toe doing after both wishbones and the steering idler change at the weekend. Cost £32 + VAT and no longer handles like a triffle on steroids. Lubbly jubbly straight line and no more screeeeeeeeeeeeeching.

Top job, straight steering wheel and 168 MPG now. Ok I lied about the MPG, but the rest is true.

Hi, I did my wishbones and drop links last weekend, and like yourself ended up with a horrible screeching noise at times when cornering, this was after having tracking done. It turned out to be the back plate touching the discs occasionaly. just put a screwdriver in between and moved it away, job done. Might be worth checking out.

Be very wise with your situation. It is likely the Camber adjusters have been released in order to fit the wishbones. It's unlikely the Camber positions have been returned after, so this is an immediate issue.

What is of concern is the noise you describe. On the Omega the only angles activated on a lock would be 'Camber' adjustable... Castor 'not adjustable' and 'TOOT' not adjustable. if you do indeed have tyre squeal then seek attention immediately.
If the issue is Camber related then this thread might prompt action on your behalf.

I had a terrible screeching from the front wheels and still do slightly, I had my geometry adjusted last thursday at chemix in halesowen. the before measurements were terrifiying.

Left Front                                                Front Right

Camber -1*46'                                        Camber -2*31'

Caster 4*38'                                           Caster 5*05'

Toe -12.6mm                                          Toe -13.0mm

                         Total Toe -25.6mm

                         Steer Ahead 0*01'

Left Rear                                                 Right Rear

Camber -1*43'                                         Camber -1*47'

Toe 0.7mm                                              Toe 0.6mm

                          Total Toe 1.3mm

                         Thrust Angle 0*00'

After Results were much better

Left Front                                                Front Right

Camber -1*48'                                        Camber -1*18'

Caster 4*38'                                           Caster 5*05'

Toe 1.0mm                                             Toe 1.1mm

                           Total Toe 2.1mm

                          Steer Ahead 0*00'

Left Rear                                                 Right Rear

Camber -1*39'                                         Camber -1*44'

Toe 1.3mm                                              Toe 2.0mm

                          Total Toe 3.3mm

                        Thrust Angle -0*02'

I was told the left caster could not be adjusted and although the value was incorrect it was not worth going to the expense of getting it sorted as it could be down to a machining fault at production. anyone got any feedback on the above values and slight squeeling from the one front tyre. I'm thinking the rubber may just be a little softer on that tyre.

They have done a good job, other than the NSF camber is still to deep for my liking... But i am a fussy sod!

It was nearly £62 with the VAT but they did have to do all 4 corners of the car, it drives like a dream now. Steering used to be very heavy, now its very light and it got some getting used to.
