Title: Technical query
Post by: Big Fra on 04 November 2006, 00:13:37
A few questions chaps,

1. Mileage at 92k, when should the timing belt be done? There is a pulley in the centre of the engine which I believe the belt runs around and It has been replaced very recently (<6 months est), could this have been done then? No history to check.

2. What type of oil is best for the 2.5 V6, and how much should I be putting in?

3. Power steering is quite heavy, fluid is fine, any issues with omega pumps?

4. Any other serviceable items worth doing while I am at it?

Any info that can be supplied would be most welcome and appreciated.

Cheers

P.S.
Just got a replacement heater bypass valve to be fitted.
All vauxhall guys should try WWW.AUTOVAUX.CO.UK.
These chaps are top notch.
HBV + Next day delivery + £30 (thats including VAT)
They also told me that they only stock genuine parts, even the illusive dealer only parts.

If you already know about them, sorry for not being Mr Current Affairs.

okay others may differ - but my thoughts.

If theres no concrete proof - ie you did it, saw it being done or a detailed dated invoice then get the cambelt and pulleys and tensioners changed - motto being if in doubt change it  :y theres a great dvd for £3 on here that will talk you through doing this.

Oil is errrrm a banned controversial taboo subject ( only joking we have had many discussions on here about it  ;D )npersonally i use vauxhalls own semi synthetic - providing its a looked after engine and is well serviced ? Oh and just over 5 litres for a 2.5v6 if i remember right

Heavy steering - cant help on that one - and not aware of any issues.. :-X

Wont do any harm to check rocker covers for any seeping oil leaks - there a weak point as can be the dis packs, check your polen filter as well ( engine back passenger side) and maybe worth also air and fuel filter as well as oil filter.

Air filter is engine bay front left, oil filter underneath on block at passenger side and fuel filter underneath at rear of car.

Hope this helps and if i have anything wrong guys im still half asleep  ;D

oh and ANY issues at all with idle being lumpy or intermittant ..clean the idle control valve and all the breathers connected to it - and then clean them again untill you could eat your dinner of em !!

.....and if your doing the cambelt, do the water pump at the same time. Cheap..about £25..and worth doing while you're in there.

autovaux tpically aren't genuine parts as such, but OEM-sourced equivalents. However, prices on some bits are more than they can be bought from a dealer if you have access to trade club pricing there.

If the steering is heavy at idle and gets easier with a few revs then the pump is starting to go, not to hard to change and not a common failure so a second hand one is low risk.

Beware of autovaux, some of there items are very hit and miss (cam cover gaskets.......)

Timing belt and tensioner change are a must if any doubt exist as to when/if they were last done. And while at it, change the water pump.

Change Engine oil & filter
Change Fuel filter, Air filter, Pollen filter

Check gear oil/ATF level
Check PAS fluid level

Consider drain & flush cooling system
Consider Brake Fluid change
Consider Spark Plugs change

Clean breathers

Clean the breathers!

As others have said, cambelt and tensioners if you cannot prove when last done. They should be 4yrs/40k . Water pump worth doing at same time, also flushes coolant than at same time.

As for fluids, Vx own's semi synth oil, their own filters (cheap), and Vx own Red coolant.  All of these are cheap on 'Trade Club' (cheaper than trade) - find someone in your area that is prepared to loan you their tradeclub card or get bits for you ;)

Power steering - as Mark said, is this just on tickover, if so pump may be dying.

If all the time, the amount of power assistance on the v6 is electronically adjustable in 3 stages via Tech2 (the v6 has speed sensitive power steering)
